Field Controller. Follow these step-by-step instructions to properly
install, connect, and set up the FX06 controller.

! WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock and Property Damage.

Disconnect or isolate all power supplies before making electrical connections.
More than one disconnect or isolation may be required to completely
de-energize equipment. Contact with components carrying hazardous voltage
can cause electric shock and may result in severe personal injury or death.

IMPORTANT: Use this FX06 controller only as an operating control. Where

failure or malfunction of the FX06 could lead to personal injury or damage to
the controlled equipment or other property, additional precautions must be
designed into the control system. Incorporate and maintain other devices such
as supervisory or alarm systems or safety or limit controls that are intended to
warn of, or protect against, failure or malfunction of the FX06 controller.

IMPORTANT: For installation with Class 2 inputs and outputs only, no

special mounting precautions are generally necessary. For use with one or
more line voltage outputs (above 30V), installation as part of a UL 508A
industrial control panel may be required by the local building or electrical
authority. These controllers are UL Listed as Open Energy Management
Equipment per UL 916.

IMPORTANT: Before specifying the FX06 for plenum applications, verify

acceptance of exposed plastic materials in plenum areas with the local
building authority. Building codes for plenum requirements vary by location.
Some local building authorities accept compliance to UL 1995, Heating and
Cooling Equipment, while others use different acceptance criteria.

IMPORTANT: Cables and wiring at Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) and
Class 2 wiring (North America) must be separated from power line voltage
wiring. A minimum separation distance of 30 cm (12 in.) is recommended. Do
not run extra low voltage cables parallel to power line voltage cables for long
distances greater than 3 m (10 ft). Do not run extra low voltage wiring close to
transformers or high frequency generating equipment.

The TM-2100 Series Room Command Module is designed for wall
mounting in the room to be controlled. It should be located where the
occupant can easily read and adjust the set point dial or fan speed
override switch. It should be placed where the temperature is
representative of the general room conditions. Cold or warm air
draughts, radiant heat and direct sunlight should be avoided.

Wiring
Before connecting or disconnecting any wires, ensure that all power
supplies have been switched off and all wires are potential-free to
prevent equipment damage and avoid electrical shock. Terminations are
made on the terminal blocks in the base of the module, which accept up
to 1.5 mm2 (AWG16) wires.
All wiring to the module is at Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV in
Europe, Class 2 in North America) and must be separated from power
line voltage wiring. Do not run wiring close to transformers or high
frequency generating equipment. Complete and verify all wiring
connections before applying power to the controller to which the
module is connected.

FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin 37

Detailed Procedures
Analog Inputs
The four FX06 analog inputs can be configured to accept a wide range
of input signals, either passive or active.
The ranges of active sensor (voltage) inputs are set using configuration
parameters within the application software. These parameters,
HighRange and LowRange, define the equivalent values for reading at
high (10 V, 4.5 V) and low (0 V, 0.5V) signal inputs. Voltage inputs
from differential pressure transducers can be linearized by a square root
function (SQRT), which operates over the complete range of the input.
The passive sensor (resistance) inputs have preconfigured linearization
characteristics within the application software. For these sensors, the
measurement range is fixed. The user can set the reliability range via
software.
The input signal is converted by the FX06 according to the related
Analog Input object setup configuration. The setup possibilities are:
Linear 0 - 10 V
A99 temperature sensor
Ni1000 JCI temperature sensor
Pt1000 temperature sensor
Ratiometric sensor 0.5 - 4.5 V
NTC 10K ohm temperature sensor
The measurement unit is also configurable to enable the controller to
propagate the measured value via the network in the appropriate format.
(This is particularly important for LONWORKS networks.) Available
configurable units include:
Temperature
Percentage
Air Pressure
Liquid Pressure
Flow
Concentration (ppm = parts per million)
Voltage
A configurable filter constant in seconds is available in the FX06

Connecting Passive Resistive Sensors

The FX06 controller provides the power source and linearizes the
signals from resistive temperature device (RTD) sensors connected to
analog inputs to provide a reading in temperature units.
The analog input must be configured to accept the correct passive
sensor type in the control application software loaded into the FX06.
Figure 37 shows a Johnson Controls A99 temperature sensor wiring
diagram. All resistive sensors are connected in a similar way.

Figure 37: Typical Passive Sensor Connection Diagram

IMPORTANT: The two resistive sensor leads have no polarity; therefore, it is
not necessary to respect any specific order when connecting to the input
terminals.
FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin 39

Connecting Active Sensors

The FX06 can accept active temperature, pressure, flow and humidity
sensors that provide voltage signals.
The analog input must be configured to accept a 0 - 10 V or ratiometric
(0.5 - 4.5 V) signal in the control application software loaded into the
FX06. A 15 VDC or 5 VDC power limited supply is available in the
FX06 controller for active inputs.

Digital Inputs
The FX06 controller accepts five digital (binary) inputs from voltage
free contacts.
Note that there is one common terminal for all five digital inputs.
The Digital Input objects in the application software provide the
interface between the hardware digital input channels and the control
logic. A digital input is active depending on its polarity setting. The
default setting is Normally Open or Direct, which means that it is
active (true) when the contact is closed.

Connecting the Transition Counter Input

The FX06 features one transition counter input on DI1 which can
sample a pulse signal at 50 Hz, with a minimum ON time of 10 ms and
a minimum OFF time of 10 ms.
The Input Counter object in the application software provides the
interface between the digital input, acting as a transition counter, and
the control application.
The transition counter can be used as a totalizer for energy consumption
measurement or for counting the number of times an item of equipment
has been started.

Analog Outputs
The FX06 controller provides two 0 - 10 VDC (each at 3 mA
maximum) or one 0 - 10 VDC and one PWM (100 Hz) analog outputs.
The Analog Output objects in the application software provide the
interface between the two hardware analog output channels and the
control application.

Figure 40: Analog Output Connection Diagram

The analog outputs can be configured for direct or reverse acting in the
control application software. The output signal can be limited by high
limit (MaxOutput) and low limit (MinOutput) values.

Connecting the 0 10 V Analog Output

The FX06 analog outputs are commonly used to drive proportional
devices and can be connected to drive any of the Johnson Controls
proportional valve actuators.
The following figure represents the connection diagram:

Figure 41: Connecting the Analog Output to a Valve Actuator

IMPORTANT: Make sure to respect connection polarities when wiring
multiple actuators. Powering an actuator without internal isolation of the input
signal and with the same power supply as the FX06 Field Controller will lead
to the loss of isolation of the microprocessor in the FX06. Failure to respect
the power supply polarity may result in a short circuit causing the external fuse
to blow.
FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin 43

Connecting the PWM Analog Output

The PWM output is available on models LP-FX06P1x-000C on the
Analog Output AO2 and it gives additional flexibility and capability to
drive and command a fan speed controller, such as the Johnson Controls
U215LP-PWM Series.

Connecting a Fan Speed Controller with Opto-isolated PWM

Input
In the case where the PWM input of the fan speed controller is opto-
isolated, the FX06 provides a Voltage Reference signal to power the
input.
The AO Voltage Reference (AO V Ref) signal supplies the 15 VDC at
20 mA maximum needed to polarize the opto-isolated PWM input of
the connected load.

Digital Outputs
The FX06 controller features six digital (binary) outputs, available in
three hardware configurations with:
six relays
four relays and two triacs
one free relay, three interlocked relays and two triacs
The Digital Output objects in the application software provide the
interface between the hardware digital output channels and the control
application.
A digital output can be overridden and its value modified via a
supervisory system if the control application is configured for this
feature.
The Digital Output objects can be configured using the FX Tools
software package to provide the following output types:
On/Off Output: the triac/relay is switched on or off depending on the
input request.
Hermetic Compressor Output: features all the functions required to
drive a hermetic compressor. It provides the logic, interlocking and
timing features that are required for such application.
Duration Adjusting Type (DAT) Output: the DO (typically a triac) is
driven on or off with a time based duty-cycle that is proportional to the
numeric input request. A minimum On/Off time may be set to avoid
very short On pulses in the neighborhood of the low range value
(Output at 0%) and very short Off pulses when close to the high range
value (Output at 100%).
Position Adjusting Type (PAT, Incremental Control) Output: a pair
of triacs can be used to drive a synchronous reversible electric actuator
in one of the two directions in response to a change in the numeric input
request.
A PAT output gives modulating control by using the configured
actuator full-stroke (fully open to fully close) time to drive the actuator
for a part of that time base in proportion to the change in the controlling
numeric input. For example, for a 100-second actuator to achieve 40%
open, the actuator runs 40 seconds from the fully closed position.
A dead band, in percent of full-stroke time, may be set to avoid driving
the actuator for very small changes in the output signal, thus reducing
unnecessary wear on the drive mechanism.
46 FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin

The PAT Object requires two digital output channels, typically triacs.
One triac will be switched on when the output must increase, the other
one will be switched on when the output must decrease. The polarity of
the PAT is configurable to change the increasing and decreasing
physical channels without rewiring.
At 0% or 100% position the duration of switching is increased by a
configurable value (ResyncAmount) to ensure that the valve or other
controlled device is completely at its end position. Whenever the
estimated position remains fixed to 0% or 100% for a time equal to a
configurable period, typically two hours, a synchronization action will
occur according to the ResyncAmount configurable parameter.
Whenever the output remains in a fixed position for more then a
configurable period, the PAT output applies the anti-sticking function, if
enabled, to exercise the device and the drive mechanism. This is
particularly useful for water valves, which require regular activity of the
inner parts to keep them free to move.
Damper PAT Output object is identical to the above with the
exception that it does not increase the duration of the switching when
0% or 100% is reached to avoid unstable control of air systems and just
implements the synchronization action as configured. Moreover it does
not implement the anti-sticking function as damper drives are not
typically subject to this problem.

Connecting the Relays

The FX06 features up to six digital outputs with electromechanical

Single Pole Single Throw (SPST) relays.
Each relay contact has a separate common terminal, ensuring a double
isolation between the contact and microprocessor and between relay
contacts. Having a separate common terminal and double isolation
allows the connection to different voltage supplies.

Outputs
Note: For FX06P3x models, the relays DO4, DO5 and DO6 are
hardware interlocked so they provide safe control of the motor. Other
FX06 relay outputs are not hardware interlocked and accidental
energizing of more than one relay at the same time may damage a motor
with multiple speed connections.

Connecting the Triacs

The FX06P2x and FX06P3x models with triac (0.5 A, 24 VAC) digital
outputs are commonly used to operate in PAT and DAT modes.

Alarm and Event Management

The FX06 controller manages and records events or errors that are
generated by the operating system and events or alarms that are
associated with data points or variables in the control application.
System events indicate to the user that the control system may require
some attention and include such events as:
system power up
communication message transfer failure (SMS)
application or display diagnostic error
Application events or alarms indicate to the user that the controlled
equipment requires attention or that the controlled conditions are not
within the expected limits. For example:
analog value is outside of a desired range
status value represents a condition that is not normal
When an event goes into the active state, it is entered into the table of
active events and the event history log with the time and date of
occurrence, and a message window appears on the display screen. The
event can also be configured to send a text message a mobile telephone
with Short Message Service (SMS).
When active events are configured to be acknowledged by a user, they
are only removed from the table of active events when acknowledged
and they have returned to the inactive or normal state. Events may be
acknowledged at the user interface panel.
The table of active events and the event history log may be viewed on
the user interface display.

Event Maker
The Event Maker is the specific plug-in of the FX Builder tool that is
used to define, at control application design time, the events to be
generated and how they are treated. A maximum of 20 events can be
defined.

The Events Icon opens the Event Maker plug-in.

56 FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin

Figure 55: Event Maker Plug-in

Events can be associated with changes in binary or enumerated logic
variables in the Network Profile or the Application Profile. System
events are pre-defined conditions related to the execution of the
application by the operating system.
Event Maker allows the user to select the destination for each event
from the available Contacts or Groups defined in the Address Book. As
a single destination must be defined, if user wants to send notification to
more than one Contact, a Group has to be defined in the Address Book
containing all the Contacts to be notified.
FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin 57

Time Scheduling
The FX06 has a real-time clock that supports all real-time functions,
including the display of time and date on the screen and the time
stamping of each event.
The real-time clock also enables the time scheduling of start and stop
commands and set point changes to the plant that is being monitored
and controlled. Scheduled commands may be configured to execute on
one or more days of the week and an exception day calendar allows for
alternative time schedules on holidays or during special periods in the
year. Time schedules may be displayed and edited on a remote MUI
user interface. (Display and editing on the integral user interface will be
available at a future date.)
The clock is backed up by a rechargeable capacitive battery with a
back-up time of at least 10 days at 25C (77F).
58 FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin

Supervisory Option
The FX06 Field Controller can be integrated into a supervisory building
management system for continuous monitoring of the control system.
The FX06 supports two methods of integration.

N2 Open Integration
The FX06 controller can be connected to the N2 Open network of a
supervisory system such as a Building Automation System (BAS),
which then has access to all the control network variables, and
parameters that were available to the communication services.
The list of variables and parameters available to the network is defined
in the network profile that is part of the application loaded to the
controller and can be different for each device. For this reason the
FX06, like every other controller in the Facility Explorer family, is
integrated into Johnson Controls Metasys systems as an N2 Open
Compatible Vendor Device (VND).
The FX Builder tool automatically generates a file (.prn) that contains
all the relevant information from the specific control application for the
integration of the FX06 controller into a supervisory system or
controller with an N2 Open interface.
The PRN file contains a column labeled Point Type and a column
labeled Point Address. This information is used to generate the Network
Point Type and Network Point Address in the supervisory system or
controller.

LONWORKS Network
The FX06 controller can be equipped with a LON interface which
enables it to send data to other LON controllers on a LONWORKS
network and to send data on request to supervisory system or controller
fitted with a LONWORKS network driver card.
The network variable input (NVI) and network variable output (NVO)
points in the network profile of the control application can be configured
by a LONWORKS network configuration tool to transmit and receive data
over the LONWORKS Bus.
In this way a network of FX06 controllers fitted with the LON
communication module can share data on a peer-to-peer basis and a
network controller is not required unless the network is to be supervised
by a LON supervisory system.

FX06 Field Controller LONWORKS Limits

The FX06 LONWORKS interface can expose to the network up to 62
Networks Variables (NVIs, NVOs) and 100 Configuration parameters
(CPs) stored into the FX06 Field Controller memory.
FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin 59

Software Programming and Application Configuration

The programming and configuration of the FX06 controller is done using
the navigation trees and graphic screens of the FX Builder tool that is part
of the FX Tools Pro software package. The configuration includes the
definition of the devices to be connected, the physical inputs and outputs
and data points to be monitored and the format of the user interfaces.
All the communication parameters for supervisory functions and event
messaging can be defined in the FX Builder tool as well as the user profiles
with passwords to protect the FX06 from unauthorized access. Trend logs
are configured and time schedules generated in the FX Builder tool.
The FX Builder tool is also used to build the control functions that the
FX06 controller will execute, including the commands from the integral or
remote display, SMS messages or a supervisory system if connected.
In addition the FX Builder can be used to build a distributed application
that encompasses the control functions of a master controller (FX16 Master
Controller or MD20 Master Display) and up to eight or sixteen Facility
Explorer slave controllers on its local link bus. Any or all of the slave
controllers can be an FX06 controller. The application is downloaded to the
master controller, which then automatically loads the slave controllers.
Applications are generated in a graphic screen environment with many
features that help the user to build the application quickly and accurately.
The applications are built from standard function modules and control
objects that can be nested in custom assemblies and can be saved for re-use
in other applications. The tool offers complete flexibility in the generation
of applications but has the features to reuse existing assemblies and
standard applications where appropriate for an economic solution.

FX Builder

Control Application
The FX Builder tool is used to build the control application that the
FX06 controller will execute when downloaded into the controller.
The user builds the control algorithm and logic on a graphical canvas by
creating and connecting instances of the objects in the database of the
controller. An object is a functional block with inputs, attributes, an
internal processing method and outputs.
By means of connections between inputs and outputs values are passed
between the objects or between the objects and the network profile.
A connection has always the same direction, from the source to the
destination. Sources can be the network variables inputs (NVIs) and
configuration parameters (CPs) in the network profile, and the object
outputs. Destinations are the network variable outputs (NVOs) in the
network profile and the object inputs.
The object inputs are used by the object to read values coming from
other objects or from the supervisory network.
The object outputs are used by the object to present its results. They can
then be used by other objects or propagated through the supervisory
network.
The objects also have some static values which can be set only at
design-time, known as attributes, which are typically used to determine
the behavior of an object or used as default values in case the input
values are missing or have invalid values.
When developing an application, a maximum of 255 instances of each
available object can be used. The available objects in the FX06
controller are shown in the table below.
The control algorithm and logic can also interact with the alarm and
event management, user interfaces and communication services to
generate information and alarm messages for the user.
The FX06 controller is normally delivered without an application.
When the user has a standard application that will be loaded in multiple
controllers, the controller can be delivered from the factory with the
application already loaded on request.

Customer ID
Customer ID protects a controller downloaded with a custom developed
application and protects the application source code from editing by
unauthorized users. Three Customer ID types are used:
Public ID: applications that are saved with Public ID can be
downloaded and commissioned by any user with the Public ID
enabled in FX Tools.
Demo ID: applications that are saved with the Demo ID can only be
downloaded to demo controllers.
Customer Specific/ Private ID: applications that are saved with a
Customer Specific ID will make those applications source files
readable only by users who have the same ID enabled in FX Tools.
Once a controller has been downloaded with a Customer Specific
ID, the controller will become customer specific and only allow
downloading of an application with the same Customer Specific ID.

Application Upload/Download
The FX06 is a fully programmable controller and the application can be
downloaded to the controller via a personal computer with the
FX CommPro or FX Loader software tools or uploaded/downloaded via
the FX Programming Key.

Use an RS232C to RS485 converter (for example, IU-9100 or
CVTPRO) to connect the PC to the N2 Open module of the FX06.
Make sure the converter supports the Automatic Send Data Control
and does not require RTS (Request To Send) control.
Use a null-modem cable to connect the PC to the RS232C module of the
FX06.
Use the FX Loader or FX CommPro N2 to download the application.

LON
Use an SLTA or a PCC10 LON interface to connect to the LON module
of the FX06, which has an FTT10a transceiver.
Use the FX CommPro LON or FX Loader to download the application.

FX Programming Key
The FX Programming Key allows the user to easily download the stored
application to the FX06 controller. This is convenient when loading
multiple controllers on a construction site or in the factory at the end of
the production line. The FX06 can be loaded at the press of a button
with no need for a computer or a communication card or converter. The
FX Programming Key is directly connectable to the communication port
in the display panel of the FX06.

Application Uploading
Before the FX Programming Key can be used to load the FX06
controller, it has to be loaded with the appropriate application. The
application can be downloaded via FX Loader (Version 3.1.3 and later) or
uploaded from an already programmed FX06 controller.

Uploading the Application from a Programmed FX06 to the

FX Programming Key
To upload the application from a programmed FX06 controller to the FX
Programming Key:
1. Turn off the FX06 controller.
2. To access the programming key port, slide the keypad to the right,
away from the display, as shown in the figure below. Use a small
screw-driver blade to release the keypad section if necessary.

Figure 59: Accessing the Programming Key Port

3. Connect the FX Programming Key to the port now accessible in the
front panel.
FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin 67

4. Power up the FX06 controller. The two LEDs on the FX

Programming Key start blinking alternatively indicating that an
operation has to be selected.
5. Press the FX Programming Key button to change from upload mode
to download mode and vice-versa (the corresponding LED will blink
rapidly). Make sure the green Upload LED is blinking and then
confirm the upload action by pressing the button for more than
3 seconds
During the uploading process, the LED blinks. When the operation ends
successfully the blink will stop and the green LED will remain steady
ON. If the operation fails the two LEDs will blink together.
Note: If parameter values in the source FX06 controller have been
changed by the user via the display or via a PC connection (using
FX CommPro), these changes are not uploaded into the
FX Programming Key. The application uploaded contains the parameter
defaults that were saved by the FX Builder at design time.
The FX Programming Key can now be used to download the application
to other FX06 controllers.

Uploading the Application from FX Loader to the FX

Programming Key
To upload the application from FX Loader to the FX Programming Key:
1. Connect the FX Programming Key to the RS485/RS232C converter
via the plug-adapter and power the FX Programming Key with a
dedicated AC/DC power adapter.

Figure 60: Loader-Device Selection Page

2. Launch the FX Loader.
3. Select N2 Open and the FX-AppKey icon.
68 FX06 Field Controller Technical Bulletin

4. Power up the FX Programming Key via the AC/DC adapter. The two
LEDs start blinking alternatively indicating that an operation has to
be selected.
5. Select the application in the FX Loader to be uploaded.

Figure 61: Application Selection

6. Press the FX Programming Key button until the green Upload LED
starts blinking. Confirm the upload action by pressing the button for
3 seconds.
7. Click Next on the FX Loader tool screen.
If the key already contains an application, the FX Loader asks you if you
want to erase it. If you answer No, the operation is aborted. If you answer
Yes, the application in the FX Programming Key is erased and the new
application is uploaded.
During the upload the LED blinks. When the operation ends successfully,
the blinking stops and the green LED remain steady on. If the operation
fails, the two LEDs blink together.

Security
The uploading to the FX Programming Key is always performed and
there are no restrictions such as Customer ID or Family ID. The
application program uploaded is in compiled format and cannot be
downloaded to a PC or opened/edited by the FX Builder. Application
privacy and security is not compromised.
The downloading process follows the security rules implemented via the
Customer ID. See the table below:

Table 11: FX Programming Key Security

Customer ID of the Customer ID in Download Result
Application in the the Controller
Programming Key
Public ID Public ID Executed
Public ID Private ID Not Executed
Private ID Private ID Executed only if Customer IDs
match (same Private ID)
Private ID Public ID Executed and Customer ID in
controller set to Customer ID
(Private ID) of the application in
the FX Programming Key.

FX Programming Key Memory Erase

If the key is already loaded with an application and the user wants to
replace it with a different application, a memory erase is necessary.
The FX Loader automatically performs the memory erase when the
application is loaded from a PC. The memory erase has to be manually
performed by the user when the application has to be loaded from an
FX06 controller.
The steps to follow are:
1. Power up the key, either by hot-plugging it to a FX06, already ON
or with an AC/DC adapter.
2. The memory erase is initiated by pressing the key button for more
than 15 seconds.
3. During the erase process the green LED will slowly blink, then the
green and the yellow twice alternatively, and finally the green will
remain steady on to confirm that the flash memory is erased.
If the two LEDs blink simultaneously it means that the erase process
has failed. Re-try. When the memory is completely erased the LEDs
stops blinking and the key is now ready for a new upload. The memory
erase is also necessary if the previous upload from the FX06 controller
failed (for example, communication was interrupted or power failed).
