Introduction
The Scotch yoke (also known as slotted link mechanism) is a reciprocating
motion mechanism, converting the linear motion of a slider into rotational motion, or vice
versa. The piston or other reciprocating part is directly coupled to a sliding yoke with a slot
that engages a pin on the rotating part. The location of the piston versus time is a sine wave of
constant amplitude, and constant frequency given a constant rotational speed.
The motion analysis for the Scotch mechanism can be found in most mechanisms text books.
For this case the displacement is given by:
X R(1cos)
And velocity and acceleration can be written as:
v Rsin
a = R2 cos + R sin

Objective:
Study of reciprocating movement for machines and calculation diagram of
displacement, velocity and acceleration and compare experimental results with therotical
results.
Experimental procedure:
1. Set the SCOTCH YOKE at 0mm for the connecting rod, and 0 for the rotating disk.
3. Change the angle for the disk by 30 each time until 360, and each time measure X .
5. Plot graphs between the angular displacement and the displacement X, velocity V, and the
acceleration a.

Discussion
1-Plot experimental and theoretical result for displacement versus angular displacement in the
same graph, as well as theoretical velocity and acceleration versus angular displacement for
Scotch-Yoke mechanisms.
3- discuss the difference between scotch yoke mechanism and the crank shaft internal
combustion engines?
