MATERIALS:
1 piece round bar 1 inch diameter x 2 inch length
PROCEDURE:
1. Mount the workpiece carefully and properly in the lathe machine.
2. Perform the straight turning cut on the metal bar.
3. Mark the workpiece to the preferred size of (23.2mm diameter x 61.3 length) on the ball
peen hammer head.
4. Perform the off-hand forming on the parting division.
5. With the tool set to a depth that will produce the required large diameter, set it to automatic
feed. The tool is gradually fed with the cross feed while the carriage moving from right to
left.
6. Make the curved part by following manually moving the carriage.
7. Cut to the appropriate dimensions, according to the preliminary drawing.
8. Bore the 8mm (5/16 inch) diameter on the center of the ball peen head.
9. Bore a countersink of 12.7mm.
10. Finish with a file.
QUESTIONS:
1. What is forming process?
- Forming process is whereby the work piece is a shaped longitudinal prism that
undergoes a reduction and change in its cross-section area and shape while being pulled
through a shaped converging die.
2. What kinds of tools are needed in the forming process?
- A form tool is precision-ground into a pattern that resembles the part to be formed. The
form tool can be used as a single operation and therefore eliminate many other
operations from the slides (front, rear and/or vertical) and the turret, such as box tools
4. What should be done to lessen the chattering noise produced by forming tools?
- To lessen the chattering noise produced by forming tools the turrets must be used to
support the work.
10. In what kind of production machine are forming tools best suited for?
- The kind of production machine of forming tools are best suited for lathe machines
production.

These hammers are to be used with more fragile surfaces. A ball peen hammer can be used
for a number of operations, but its main functions are the following: Expansion and shaping of the
free end of copper roves, light rivets and the like, for the purpose of setting the joint tight in place.
This is done with the ball portion of the hammer. Ball-peen hammer heads are typically made of
heat treated forged high-carbon steel or alloy steel; it is harder than the face of a claw hammer.
Softer brass heads are sometimes used.
CONCLUSION:
In this activity, students were able to make a ball peen hammer head with the use of lathe
machine and different tools. Students were able to practice a forming process in a lathe machine.
In this activity, accidents may occur but thankfully there isnt. Therefore, I conclude that this
activity have been a successful one.
RECOMMENDATION:
Listening and understanding the things that the lab assistant are saying would be highly
recommended, since it will be the source of your knowledge for your project or workpiece. Also,
brush the metal excess occasionally. These metal excess may stick to your shoes, so if theres
metal excesses on the floor, use the broom and the dustpan of the laboratory. Finally, be careful
on using the machine, and do not rush things because it may cause accidents or inaccurate
measurements.
