SEISMIC REQUIREMENTS
This specification section relates to structural elements and shall be edited only by the
Structural Engineer of Record for the specific project.
(NTS: This section is applicable to all projects with and without structures. Edit
this section to suit project requirements. Coordinate this section with the Note to
Specifiers indicated in this Section and the structural drawings. Seismic design
requirements for projects without structural drawings shall be added to this section
by the Structural Engineer for the project. This section shall also be reviewed by the
Chief Structural Engineer and the Project Manager for the specific project.)
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION:
A. This section establishes the minimum seismic design requirements for architectural,
mechanical, electrical and non-structural components.
B. The Contractor shall be responsible for the seismic requirements specified including
the conformance of work for all subcontractors, manufacturers and suppliers with
regard to the indicated and specified seismic requirements.
(NTS: Select and list specification sections for inserting into this subsection based on
the following:
1. Specification sections that contain products and construction that the reader
might expect to find in this section BUT are specified elsewhere.
2. Specification sections referenced in the body of this section.)
1.02 RELATED WORK:

1.04 DEFINITIONS:
C. The specified seismic criteria is defined as the seismic criteria cited on the structural
drawings or specified herein for the design of the basic structure.
(NTS: When a project will have structural drawings, insert the following paragraph
A and delete paragraph B. When a project will not have structural drawings insert
paragraph B in lieu of paragraph A and provide pertinent information required.
Contact Chief Structural Engineer for assistance.)
A. Refer to structural drawings for seismic requirements and also conform to the
requirements specified herein.
B. Seismic design shall conform to Libyan Standards-Criteria and Practice for Design
and Construction of Earthquake Resistant Buildings and also International Building
Code. (Structural Engineer for the project to confirm the requirements specified
herein.).
D. The interrelationship of components and their effect on each other shall be such that
the failure of one component shall not cause the failure of any other component.
F. Exceptions: Exemption from the requirements for seismic analysis and design are
permitted only to the extent permitted in the reference code.
A. Where specified in the technical specifications, provide and complete the Certificate
of Unit Responsibility form in Section 01300 and submit to CM/CS prior to
manufacture of components.
In addition, submit the following support data along with Certificate of Unit
Responsibility:
B. Storage Tanks: Tanks, supporting structures and anchorages shall be designed for
the weight of the tank, appurtenances and the tank contents at the maximum
capacity. Tank contents shall not be considered in resistance to seismic loads.
D. Piping Systems: Support and bracing of piping systems shall account for the weight
and hydrodynamic effects of the contents.
E. Pressure Piping: Pressure piping support and bracing shall conform to ASME B 31
in addition to the force and displacement requirements of the reference code.
F. Sprinkler Systems: Sprinkler system support and bracing shall conform to NFPA 13
in addition to the force and displacement requirements of the reference code.
G. General Supports: Pipe, duct, raceways and cable tray supports and bracing shall
conform to the AISC Manual of Steel Construction and MSS SP-58 in addition to
the force and displacement requirements of the reference code.
