Materials:

Lesson goal:
Talk about ways to prevent spreading germs and diseases to other people.
Growing independence in handwashing
Standard:
Early Learning Expectation: Healthy Choices. Children begin to have knowledge
about and make age-appropriate healthy choices in daily life.
o Show growing independence in keeping themselves clean, personal care when
eating, dressing, washing hands, brushing teeth, use of tissues for nose-
blowing (and their disposal), and toileting
o Talk about ways to prevent spreading germs and diseases to other people.
Objective(s):
During the story, students will identify the proper way to cover their mouth/wash
hands
After reading the book, it will next be discussed of how to keep from getting germs
(not putting hands in mouth, etc.) and how to prevent from spreading them (wash
hands, cover mouth, etc.).
Differentiation:
Make easier- Use pictures of steps of washing hands and have students
look at picture and tell steps
Make harder- Have students tell me how to wash hands/cough properly
before reading the steps in the book; tell how germs can be spread prior to
reading
Do in small group
Have student sit in chair, rather than carpet
Engagement: Transition: Today we are going to learn about what makes us sick. How
many of you have had a runny nose? How many of you have ever had a
sore throat? How many have had the flu? How many of you have ever
had a cold? What makes us get sick? Where are germs found? Today, we
are going to learn about germs and how to prevent ourselves from getting
sick (questions; tell, explain, inform)
Exploration:
Content: Germs- tiny creatures that makes us sick
The book Germs Are Not for Sharing will be read to introduce the concept
of germs.
Throughout the book students will be asked the proper way to cover their
mouth and to wash their hands. (task analysis, question)
Explanation:
After reading the book, it will next be reviewed of how to keep from
getting germs (not putting hands in mouth, etc.) and how to prevent from
spreading them (wash hands, cover mouth, etc.). (repetition, task analysis)
