Note
Terminate the PROVOX Control and MUX I/O serial coaxial cables at both ends with a 75 ohm
terminator. PROVOX Control and MUX I/O files contain no integrated termination capability. If a
PROVOX Control/MUX I/O file is at one end of the cable as in the preceding figure, install a BNC T
connector with a 75 ohm terminator to terminate the cable at these locations
The term DeltaV Controller Interface for PROVOX I/O is used to describe the combined
system as well as the component that provides the interface between a DeltaV system and
a PROVOX system. The individual components are:
DeltaV Controller Mounts in a cabinet on standard 19 inch vertical rails. The system
Interface for power supplies, DeltaV controllers, and DeltaV Controller Interface
PROVOX I/O for PROVOX I/O cards (2 of each are required for redundancy)
Carrier install in the six carrier slots. Four BNC style coaxial connectors
connect the primary and secondary serial I/O communication links
on the carrier to the serial communication links on the PROVOX
Distributed (MUX) CP6601 Serial Buffer cards and the Control I/O
CP6701 Power Communications Cards. Two, 25 pin D-shell
connectors and VerticalPlus cables provides signal and power
connections to the S-series DeltaV I/O horizontal carrier.
DeltaV Controller Provides the interface between one redundant DeltaV controller
Interface Cards for and redundant PROVOX Control I/ O buses.

Overview
The following PROVOX Distributed (MUX) I/O products are not supported. It is
recommended that you use the DeltaV Programmable Serial card in place of these
products. It allows more efficient interaction between the DeltaV controller and external
PLCs or serial devices.
Note
The VIM card, Zone 2 Remote I/O card, SLS 1508, and the Wireless Gateway are not supported on
this solution.
System capacities
The full range of 16 PROVOX Control I/O files with redundant cards and 16 PROVOX
Distributed (MUX) I/O files with simplex cards are supported. Each SD Plus controller can
support 750 Device Signal Tags (DSTs) and each SX controller can support 1500 DSTs.
Each I/O channel is assigned one DST. As with DeltaV I/O, a DST is counted toward
licensing only if it is linked to a module. The number of channels varies depending upon
the card type; but generally, 46 or more Control I/O cards and 93 or more Distributed I/O
cards constitute about 750 DSTs. Backup cards do not contribute to the DST count. Add an
SD Plus or SX controller for every 750 DSTs that you have in your PROVOX I/O subsystem
and an SX controller for every 1500 DSTS that you have in your PROVOX I/O subsystem.
Remember to carefully consider wiring lengths and the location of control modules when
you split your I/O across multiple controllers. Refer to DeltaV Books Online for complete
information on DSTs including how DSTs are counted for licensing and for more
information on referencing data.
Related information
The default DST for channel 6 of card 11 in file 9 of a Control I/O subsystem connected to
the PROVOX I/O Interface card connected to controller CRTL02 is: CTRL02F09C11CH06
7
Overview
Similarly, the default DST for channel 4 of card 6 in file 12 of a Distributed I/O subsystem
connected to the PROVOX I/O Interface card connected to controller CRTL0B is:
CRTL0BF12C06CH04
You can rename your DSTs to be more meaningful in your control strategy.
A DST: the external reference links to a DST in the same way a function block links to
the DST.
An I/O path: The external reference links to the channel input and output
parameters in this form: NODE/PVXIO/Card File/Card/Channel/Parameter/Field
Redundancy
Redundant power supplies, redundant DeltaV controllers, and redundant DeltaV
Controller Interface for PROVOX I/O cards are required for redundancy in the controller
installation. Each primary and backup DeltaV Controller Interface for PROVOX I/O card is
paired with a DeltaV controller. (Controller A is paired with DeltaV Controller Interface for
PROVOX I/O card A and controller B is paired with DeltaV Controller Interface for PROVOX
I/O card B.) Controller A is powered from power supply A and controller B is powered from
power supply B. Both power supplies provide load-shared power to both DeltaV Interface
for PROVOX I/O cards. Both of the serial communication links are used in a simplex or
redundant DeltaV Controller Interface for PROVOX I/ O solution. Refer to the PROVOX
documentation for information on PROVOX Control I/O card redundancy. Distributed
(MUX) I/O does not support redundant I/O cards.

5. Select PROVOX I/O Interface and follow the prompts to upgrade the PROVOX I/O
Interface card and complete the upgrade.
Loops that use PROVOX output channels should not run faster than 200
milliseconds. Failure to follow this requirement could result in module errors such as
output transfer errors.
The valid range for the PULSE_DURATION parameter (DI cards, Discrete Output
Momentary channel types) is 0.1 to 25.5 in 0.1 increments. The valid range for the
RATE_PERIOD parameter, available on PCI cards is 0.1 to 5 seconds in 0.1
increments. For both the PULSE_DURATION and RATE_PERIOD parameters, the
DeltaV system will accept a value outside of the range but adjusts the value and
allows the card to be configured. This differs from the PROVOX system that will not
accept a value outside of the valid range. For decimal values, the DeltaV system
adjusts the value to only one digit after the decimal without rounding. That is, all
decimal placements after the tenths (10ths) digit are ignored. For example, .17 is
adjusted to .1.
With the PROVOX Distributed MUX I/O RTD Card Special, you will not receive a
warning message if you configure the SPECIAL_HIGH temperature value to be lower
than the SPECIAL_LOW temperature value. Furthermore, a download of the
configuration completes successfully with no warning messages. Be sure that the
SPECIAL_LOW temperature value is lower than the SPECIAL_HIGH temperature
value.
For some PROVOX Distributed MUX I/O temperature channels, temperature ranges
uploaded to the function blocks XD_SCALE are wider than the card range
configured in the DeltaV Explorer. The function block output is accurate within the
published range in PROVOX documentation. Affected channel types are RTD (-50 to
200 F), Type J High, Type K High, and Type R
If a PROVOX I/O card loses communication with the DeltaV controller, it goes to its
FAIL_ACTION_MODE. For Time Proportional Output (TPO) cards, if the
FAIL_ACTION_MODE parameter is configured to go to the failure action value and
the FAIL_ACTION_VALUE parameter is not equal to 50%, the card sends an extra
pulse that equals the fail action value. Furthermore, if the communication with the
controller does not resume after 10 seconds all the cards in the file become
unconfigured and in the case of the TPO card, all the channels turn off. That is, the
maximum duration for a pulse in a TPO channel is 10 seconds.

Troubleshooting
If the backup card is available, the primary card switches over. After the switchover,
the primary card shows a status of Inactive (in the right pane), and OInteg is BAD.
The backup card shows a status of Active and OInteg is BAD. The Backup card now
has channels beneath it in the left pane.
4. Select the active backup card, click the right mouse button, and select Redundancy
Switchover to switch back to the primary card.
The primary card is now active and the backup card is standby and both cards should
show good status; however, automatic switchover is disabled after a manual
switchover. To enable or disable automatic switchover, select either card (primary or
backup), right-click, and select Enable/Disable Auto Switchover.
1. Click Start > All Programs > DeltaV > Operator > Diagnostics.
2. Select the Smart hybrid input or output channel for which you want to check wiring,
click the right mouse button, and select Channel Force Maintenance Ranges from
the context menu.
For an input channel, enter a valid field device range, and click OK. Refer to the
device documentation for valid ranges.
For an output channel, enter a range of 0 to 100, and click OK.
3. Perform the wiring checkout.
The forced ranges remain in effect until the field device is connected to the channel.
When the device is connected, the AI or AO block uploads the actual field device
ranges.
26
Troubleshooting
The standby controller is unavailable for a switchover if the entire DeltaV I/O
subsystem fails. For example, the standby controller is unavailable if power is
removed from the DeltaV I/O subsystem or if all I/O cards are removed. If a power
failure removes all I/O cards, a redundant pair will function as a simplex controller.
In the DeltaV system, unlike the PROVOX system, a power failure causes the DeltaV
Controller to go into Cold Restart. Refer to DeltaV Books Online for information on
Cold Restart.
In the event of a failure, the DeltaV Controller Interface for PROVOX I/O card, rather
than the PROVOX cards, holds the fail safe value.
There is no mechanism in the DeltaV Controller Interface for PROVOX I/O to change
Smart Digital Output devices to Computer mode.

Channel parameters and HART data mapping
Parameter Description
TEMPERATURE_UNIT Used to configure the temperature units (degrees F or degrees C)
of the value returned by FIELD_VAL. Available on all PROVOX RTD
and Thermocouple channel types.
SPECIAL_CONV Used to configure the Thermocouple type (B, E, J, K, R, S, or T)
that is used in the linearization algorithm. Available on PROVOX
Thermocouple special channel types.
SPECIAL_HIGH A floating-point number used to specify the high range of a PRO-
VOX RTD or Thermocouple special channel type. If the channel
type is RTD special, the value is in units that correspond with
TEMPERATURE_UNIT. If the channel type is Thermocouple spe-
cial, the value is in millivolts.
SPECIAL_LOW A floating-point number used to specify the low range of a PRO-
VOX RTD or Thermocouple special channel type. If the channel
type is RTD special, the value is in units that correspond with
TEMPERATURE_UNIT. If the channel type is Thermocouple spe-
cial, the value is in millivolts.
FIELD_VAL User configurable channel value and status (in temperature
units).
FIELD_VAL_PCT Value and status of the channel (in percent of range) as reported
by the card.
