Topic: Methods of Philosophy that Lead to Truth and Wisdom

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Distinguish opinion from truth;
b. Analyze situations that show the difference;
c. Realize that methods of philosophy lead to wisdom and truth; and
d. Evaluate opinions.

II. Content:
a. Topic: Existentialism
b. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, laptop, LCD projector, hand-outs, chalk
and board
c. Reference: Ramos, C.C.R. (2017). Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human
Person 1st Ed. Manila: Rex Bookstore, pp. 27-46.

III. Procedure:
a. Daily routine
Greet students
Short prayer
Check attendance
b. Review of previous lesson
Recall Husserls phenomenology, how consciousness is intentional, and
how phenomenology as a method of philosophy can lead to the truth.
c. Motivation
Explore the question, Who am I, really?
d. Lesson Proper
1. Introduce existentialism as a method of philosophizing
2. Discuss the common themes in existentialism
a. The human condition
b. The human response to that condition
c. Being (Existence)
d. Human freedom
e. Significance and unavoidability of choice
f. Subjectivity of life as lived
3. Present two existentialist philosophers
a. Soren Kierkegaard
b. Jean-Paul Sartre
4. Discuss Kierkegaards 3 levels authentic self
a. Aesthetic self
b. Ethical self
c. Religious self
5. Discuss the power of free individual choice in Sartres existentialism
e. Generalization
Because making choices is a central theme in existentialism, doing so
intelligently and wisely can be an empowering experience and thus can
lead to truth and wisdom.

IV. Evaluation:
1. Discuss: Existentialists say we are thrown into the world. What is meant by
the phrase thrown into the world?
2. Who was the first existentialist?
3. What are the two types of existentialism, and name a philosopher from each?
4. What are the three levels of the authentic self according to Kierkegaard?

V. Assignment:
1. Using the themes and concepts presented and discussed in class, write two or
three paragraphs on how existentialism can lead to truth and wisdom.
