The document summarizes the top 5 causes of morbidity and mortality. For morbidity, the top causes are heart disease, cancer, malignant neoplasms, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. The causes are things like plaque buildup in arteries, gene mutations, proliferation of abnormal tissues, bacterial infections, and inflammation of the lungs. For mortality, the top causes are diabetes, accidents, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and suicide, which can be due to issues like immune system attacks on insulin-producing cells, distracted driving, stress-induced high blood pressure, brain cell death, and severe depression.

*Plaque buildup thickens and stiffens artery walls,
which can inhibit blood flow through your arteries to your organs and tissues. Atherosclerosis is also the most common cause of cardiovascular disease. It can be caused by correctable problems, such as an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight and smoking.
*Over time, plaque can harden or rupture (break open).
Hardened plaque narrows the coronary arteries and reduces the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart. This can cause chest pain or discomfort called angina.
If the plaque ruptures, blood cell fragments called platelets
(PLATE-lets) stick to the site of the injury. They may clump together to form blood clots.
Blood clots can further narrow the coronary arteries and
worsen angina. If a clot becomes large enough, it can mostly or completely block a coronary artery and cause a heart attack. 2.) Cancer
*Gene mutations that occur after birth. Most gene
mutations occur after you're born and aren't inherited. A number of forces can cause gene mutations, such as smoking, radiation, viruses, cancer-causing (carcinogen chemicals), obesity, hormones, chronic inflammation and a lack of exercise.
*Over 30% of cancers are potentially avoidable by
reducing key risk factors: the most significant of these is tobacco use, which is the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths. Another 10% is due to obesity, a poor diet, lack of physical activity, and drinking alcohol.
*Some behavioral and environmental
triggers can cause changes in the body's cells that push them into a cancerous state. For example, cigarettes are known to increase the risk of lung cancer. Too much exposure to the sun can increase the risk of skin cancer. 3.) Malignant Neoplasm
*A neoplasm can be caused by an abnormal
proliferation of tissues, which can be caused by genetic mutations. Not all types of neoplasms cause a tumorous overgrowth of tissue, however (such as leukemia or carcinoma in situ). Recently, tumor growth has been studied using mathematics and continuum mechanics.
*Most malignant brain tumours are caused by
a cancer that started somewhere else in the body and spread to the brain, through the bloodstream. These are known as secondary tumours. Cancers that can spread to the brain include lung cancer, breast cancer, bowel cancer and melanoma skin cancer. 4.) Tuberculosis
*Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria that spread from
person to person through microscopic droplets released into the air. This can happen when someone with the untreated, active form of tuberculosis coughs, speaks, sneezes, spits, laughs or sings. Although tuberculosis is contagious, it's not easy to catch.
*The Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium causes
TB. It is spread through the air when a person with TB (whose lungs are affected) coughs, sneezes, spits, laughs, or talks. TB is contagious, but it is not easy to catch. 5.) Pneumonia
*Pneumonia is inflammation of the airspaces in the lungs,
most commonly due to an infection.
*Pneumonia may be caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi;
less frequently by other causes.
*The most common bacterial type that causes pneumonia is
Streptococcus pneumoniae.
*The most common cause of bacterial pneumonia is
a type of bacteria known as Streptococcus pneumoniae. Haemophilus influenzae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Legionella pneumophila are some other major bacteria that cause pneumonia. 5 Causes of Mortality:
1.) Diabetes
*Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune
system destroying the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. This causes diabetes by leaving the body without enough insulin to function normally. This is called an autoimmune reaction, or autoimmune cause, because the body is attacking itself.
*Diabetes is a chronic condition associated with abnormally
high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Insulin produced by the pancreas lowers blood glucose. Absence or insufficient production of insulin, or an inability of the body to properly use insulin causes diabetes.
2.) Accidents
*Distracted driving continues to be the number
one leading cause of car accidents in America. Talking on the phone, texting, eating, reading, grooming, and talking are just some of the ways drivers get distracted behind the wheel.
*Distracted Driving. The number one cause of car accidents
is not a criminal that drove drunk, sped or ran a red light. ...
*Speeding. You've seen them on the highway. ...
*Drunk Driving. ...
*Reckless Driving. ...
*Rain. ...
*Running Red Lights. ...
*Running Stop Signs.
3.) Stroke
*A stroke occurs when the blood supply to your
brain is interrupted or reduced. This deprives your brain of oxygen and nutrients, which can cause your brain cells to die. A stroke may be caused by a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).
*Stress hormones increase blood pressure, and
when those hormones are around long-term, it can lead to high blood pressure, the leading cause of stroke. Stresshormones are also known to lead to diabetes, atherosclerosis, and heart disease which are all stroke risk factors. 4.) Alzheimers Disease
*Like all types of dementia, Alzheimer's is caused by brain
cell death. It is a neurodegenerative disease, which means there is progressive brain cell death that happens over a course of time. The total brain size shrinks with Alzheimer's - the tissue has progressively fewer nerve cells and connections.
*Scientists believe that for most people, Alzheimer's disease
is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time. Less than 5 percent of the time, Alzheimer's is caused by specific genetic changes that virtually guarantee a person will develop the disease.
5.) Suicide
*The most common situations or life events that
might cause suicidal thoughts are grief, sexual abuse, financial problems, remorse, rejection, relationship breakup and unemployment. Psychiatric factors linked to a higher risk of suicidal ideation include: Adjustment disorder.
*They're depressed. This is without question the
most common reason people commit suicide. Severe depression is always accompanied by a pervasive sense of suffering as well as the belief that escape from it is hopeless. The pain of existence often becomes too much for severely depressed people to bear.
