FUNDAMENTALS OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP
(ENT300)

INTRODUCTION

There are three(3) GROUP ASSIGNMENT for this course :

1. Analysis of a business problem (written report : case study)


2. Identifying a business opportunity (written report)
3. Preparing a business plan (written report and presentation)

The assessment for the group assignment is as follows:


1. Case Study (business problem) 20%
2. Report(Identification of a business opportunity) 20%
3. Business Plan 60%
i. Report 30%
ii. Presentation 30%

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE GROUP ASSIGNMENT

1. Students are required to form groups comprising of 3 MEMBERS ONLY.

2. Each group needs to choose ONE potential business (Lecturer/Student identified) for the
three(3) assignments.

3. Lecturers are advised to assist students in preparing questions for the purpose of collecting
informations.

4. Lecturers are advised to prepare a letter to any agencies/company for students to collect
informations.

5. The group needs to collect information as much as possible about the company(i.e
company background,product,marketing techniques, business performance,etc).

6. The information can be collected through document reviews, personal interviews with the
owner/owners, observation, etc.

7. The group needs to write a final report using the given format.

8. Use Times New Roman 12 or Arial 11 with 1.5 spacing for the three(3) written assignments.

9. The report must be submitted on or before ______________. Failure to do so will


jeopardize the students grade for this subject.

GUIDELINES FOR EACH ASSIGNMENT ARE AS FOLLOWS.

1.WRITTEN REPORT ON CASE STUDY (20%)

A.CASE STUDY OVERVIEW

Students learn better by real life examples. Case study can assess application on
theories and concepts learned in class to real life situations.
Through case study students would be able to improve communication and enhance
team work. Furthermore they would also be able to improve problem solving and
decision making skills.
A successful case study analyses a real-life situation where existing problems need to
be solved. It should:
Relate the theory to a practical situation; for example, apply the ideas and
knowledge discussed in the coursework to the practical situation at hand in the case
study.
Identify the problems.
Select the major problems in the case.
Suggest solutions to these major problems.
Recommend the best solution to be implemented.
Detail how this solution should be implemented.

B. GUIDELINES ON CONTENTS

2.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Should be written last to focus on key points/findings.

3. INTRODUCTION

Outline background of the study.


Outline the purpose of the case study.
Describes the business problem that this project was created to address. The problem may
be process, technology, or product/service oriented. This section should not include any
discussion related to the solution.
Here, the reader should be able to get a clear picture of the essential contents of the study.

Note any assumptions made (you may not have all the information, so some assumptions
may be necessary eg: It has been assumed that, Assuming that it takes half an hour to
read one document).

4. COMPANY INFORMATION

An overview of the company and may include:


Background
Organizational Structure
Business model (eg. franchise,manufacturer etc)
Products/Services
Business, marketing, operational strategy
Financial achievements

5. COMPANY ANALYSIS
Analyze the case (product or service) using S.W.O.T.

6. BUSINESS PROBLEM
Summarize the major problem/s.
Identify alternative solutions to this/these major problem/s (there is likely to be more than
one solution per problem).
Briefly outlines each alternative solution and then evaluate it in terms of its advantages and
disadvantages.

7. RECOMMENDATION AND IMPROVEMENT

Choose which of the alternative solutions should be adopted.


Briefly justify your choice, explaining how it will solve the major problem/s.
This should be written in a forceful style as this section is intended to be persuasive.

8. REFERENCES

Make sure all references are cited correctly. Recommend that you source interviews,
business journals, periodicals, and textual references as well as some online research.
Make sure you support your ideas with facts and figures. Please try to use your own words
and ideas based on research rather than copy and paste others words from the internet.

9. APPENDICES (if any)

Attach any original data that relate to the study, but which would have interrupted the flow
of the main body. All charts, financials, visuals, and other related items can be placed here
and referenced in the report.

Opportunities are central to entrepreneurial activities.Opportunities exist to inspire individuals


to become entrepreneurs, and act as a link between the individuals and the setting up of new
ventures (Venkataraman, 2004).

3.WRITTEN REPORT AND PRESENTATION ON A BUSINESS PLAN

A. OVERVIEW

A business plan is a written document which described the proposed business or


project to be undertaken in a comprehensive manner.
It is also known as a working paper, business proposal, project paper or prospectus.
The format of a business plan depends on the requirement of the reader (eg
financial institutions, SME Corporation etc).
However a comprehensive format of a business plan is given to ENT300 students
so that they can adapt whatever format needed by other readers.

The business plan must practically enough to be implemented.
