GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION
Aklan is the province in the Philippines located in the Western Visayas Region. Its capital
is Kalibo. The province is situated in the northwest portion of the Panay Island, bordering Antique
to the Southwest, and Capiz to the east. Aklan faces the Sibuyan Sea and Romblon Province to
the north. [1]
Aklan is a mountainous province with over one-third of its land area sloping at 30 percent
on the average. It is still one of the few provinces in the country to maintain a total of some 709
hectares of virgin forest. Mountain ranges traverse the island: one; the northern knot of
Duyang and Tagacan; and the other, the Albinian mountain ranges in the west. Mount Madyaas,
at 2117 meters, is the second highest peak on Panay and is shared by Aklan and Antique. The
province has no active volcano, therefore, earthquakes have not been severe, although three
faults pass through it. The province has a total land area of 1,817 sq. kms.
Much of the province is drained of water into the Sibuyan Sea. Natural inland water resources
include rivers, streams, and creeks, springs and water falls. There is only one lake in the province,
Lake Lapu-lapu, located in the northern Malay town. There are five major river systems. The
largest and longest is the Aklan, which flows some 60 kilometers from Capiz to the mouth in
Kalibo. Ibajay river flows over 30 kilometers from Madalag to its mouth at Ibajay. The Tangalan,
Jalo, and Talon systems are much smaller. The highest waterfall in the province is the Dumalaylay
which falls some 100 meters.
The coastline of Aklan stretches for some 155 kilometers along 10 municipalities and 73
barangays. The coastline has two major physical features: Batan Bay in the south-east and
Boracay Island at the northern tip of Panay Island.
The plains of Aklan constitute an area of 100 square kilometers shaped into a diamond that
includes the central towns of Malinao and Banga and the western coastal towns of New
Washington, Kalibo and Makato.
Marshlands are along the coastal towns, comprising over 50 square kilometers. [2]
AKLAN BASE STATION
The main requirement for the assigned base station must be 10km away from the airport
radius. This means, the base station must be constructed far from the capitol instead. The air
distance between the capitol and the airport is only 2km away. This is too near for the base
station to be located. If the base station is located 10km farther away from the airport, the
interference of the signal would decrease and the efficiency would increase.
Therefore, the vicinity within the area of Makato District Municpal Hall will be chosen
since the distance from Makato up to the airport is more than 10km in air distance.

POPULATION

Based on the 2010 Population Census, the province of Aklan has a population of 535,725 or 7.54
percent of the regions total population which makes it the second smallest province in terms of
population size in Region VI and 54th in the country, having 295 persons living on a km, and with
an annual growth rate of 1.73.

As of 2010, the municipality with a largest population in Aklan is Kalibo at 74,619. Aside from
Kalibo, other municipalities which are among the top five in population size are: Malay (45,811),
Ibajay (45,279), New Washington (42,112) and Banga (38,063).

On the other hand, the three least populated municipalities are Lezo (14,518), Buruanga (16,962)
and Madalag (18,168). The last two are the farthest municipalities from Kalibo while Lezo is the
smallest municipality in terms of not just population but also in land area.

On population doubling time, the population of the province is expected to double in 40 years if
the growth rate of 1.73 remains constant or it will reach to 1,071,450 in 2050, a very alarming
figure which would mean that the number of population susceptible to hazard will also double
(per Hazard Map). In other words, the 196,664 population in high susceptible area (HAS) per table
on Risk to Population from Flood Individual Areas shall have the probability of becoming more
than 390,000 in 40 years. [2]
ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS

Aklan comprises of 17 municipalities. A single congressional district encompasses all

towns.
