Week of November 6
The year has been going by so fast! I
cant believe that trimester 1 is coming to
a close this week. Students are working
on hard on some projects before the
trimester ends and I cant wait to share
all their wonderful progress with you at
parent teacher conferences.
Religion: We have been exploring how Jesus
used parables to teach the people. Students
listened to the mustard seed story and the
yeast story that taught them how little things
can make a big difference! Students will
begin to explore the new virtue of the
month: stewardship and learn about our new
saint.
Science: Students have been learning about
ecosystems. We have discussed what abiotic
and biotic features are. Students have
learned about the food web and how
everything plays a role in the ecosystem. Im
so excited to see their final projects
Social Studies: We have been exploring what
makes up different types of communities.
Students will be in charge of teaching the
class about one type of community in the
upcoming week
Two Week Recap!
Language Arts
We have been exploring stories from different cultures. First students learned about
Mexican values with the folktale Harvest Birds. Students used the story to help understand what
an authors message is. Then students learned about Japanese culture with the story the
Kamishibai Main. We used the story to help students learn more about analyzing illustrations to
help better understand the story. Students also began to explore what an abstract noun is.
Students reviewed different types of verb tense and applied their grammar knowledge to our
Haunted House Writing Project. Students are also beginning to explore the opinion paper.
Students will begin drafting their first opinion paper later this week.
We have also begun another Literature Circle. Students are split into different groups and
reading a variety of mystery novels. Be sure to ask your student what book they are reading!
Math
We started Chapter 3 by reviewing various strategies for adding and subtracting. These
strategies will become useful as students start to face more complex problems in math. Students
will begin to focus on multiplication strategies. Students should be practicing multiplication facts at
home nightly using their fact triangles or other flashcards they may have. We will begin testing
for fluency starting next week. Students will be working on becoming a multiplication ninja in the
upcoming weeks!
