Music Video Proposal

Band & Track Name: My Bloody Valentine, When You Sleep

Running Time: 4:11
General style of music video. Will it include performance, narrative, concept? Or a mixture of
styles?
This will be a concept video, with a fractured, non linear narrative. The song is particularly fitted to a
video of this type, not only within the context of the genre that it falls under, in which concept
videos are most common, but because of its instrumental nature, and out-there style. Despite that
the video will not actually tell a story or have a narrative, there will be relation between the themes
introduced in the lyrics of the song to the visual themes and mise en scene addressed in the video.

Briefly describe what will happen in your music video. What will we see?
Throughout the music video we will be following a young female through a romanticised and dream
like lens. I want to shoot the video with the mise en scene of a home video recorded on a
camcorder, so as to establish a close personal relationship between the subject and the person
filming. This will encode the key themes of infatuation, a loss of grip on reality, and adolescent love.
To give examples of specific scenes that will feature in the video, many scenes will feature handheld
tracking shots of the female. These shots will feel very personal and private, she will not be doing
anything in particular, simply acting naturalistically, smiling, laughing, talking, walking through
empty, industrial looking locations. I also plan to use many close ups to enhance the sense of
adoration and closeness the cameraperson, and audience, feel to the actress throughout, closeups
of her face, smiling, her eyes flickering in the light, her hands, and the bare skin of her arms and
neck. I particularly like the idea of an establishing shot of a sunrise in a cityscape, with a pull focus
that draws the eye from the landscape to the girl. I feel that using extra resources like gels over
lighting to add a highly colourised, altered feel to major parts of the video would really connote the
abstract, surreal environment I will be creating. The female will be the only individual in the music
video as she is the item of focus. Green, red, and bright lights will feature heavily, along with a
background wash of the grey locations.

What resources will you need?
Props, styling, location, recording and lighting equipment, actors, etc.:
Styling and costume will be provided by myself and my actress
Variety of outdoor locations
Lighting equipment, with gels
One actress

Who will you need to organise for your music video shoot? Are they reliable?
One actress, she is very reliable and will be available at least 4 days out of 7 for filming. I plan to
shoot the full video myself with no assistance.

How will you access/organise location(s)? Is your idea do-able in terms of resources and time
scale?
A vast majority of filming locations will be outside, but the video is not set at any particular time of
year, meaning there is no specific weather requirements that must be met. I plan to conduct in
depth location recces on any possible areas that I have in mind for filming, but these will all be public
access locations. Some difficulties may come from wanting these locations to be free of members of
the public, but I have discussed this with my actress and we are both willing and available for early
morning filming to achieve the best light and not crowded environments. In terms of resources the
video is highly doable, everything I will need I have access to either of my own accord or via the
college.
