How did this pack come about?
I was asked by a reader to create a pack that taught both manuscript and
cursive writing together. I started brainstorming and realized that if this was a
pack that was truly going to teach about them how to write, they needed to
have proper pencil grip. So, I have included the prewriting pages from my pre-
writing booklet here, all in one place.
How to use this pack:

If you are just beginning, I recommend starting with the prewriting exer-
cises listed at the front of the packet.
If your child already knows how to hold a pencil correctly, then you can
begin with the letters.
The letters are not listed in alphabetical order. That is on purpose. They
are listed according to how easy they are to form in handwriting as well as
their letter sounds.
You are welcome to do them in alphabetical order, but I have found this
order to be the best, at least with my own children.
I do teach the lowercase and uppercase separate, but you can combine
them and teach them together. I find the lowercase letters are easier to
write in both manuscript and cursive, so that is where we start.
For those of you wanting to teach both manuscript and cursive together, I hope
this pack helps. It isnt complete, so I hope to add to it in the future, so stay
tuned!

There are two things I worry about most as a homeschool mom of littles, teach-
ing them to read and write. If we can accomplish those two tasks, all others will
fall in to place.
So I always start with Fine Motor Skills. Kids need to develop their Fine Motor
Skills before they can effectively grasp and hold on to a pencil. So today we
are going to learn about some activities that will help increase their Fine Motor
Skills as they work toward grasping a pencil.
You can do these activities along side their handwriting lessons, as it will only im-
prove their pencil grasp and thus, their handwriting. These activities are fun, so
kids don't even know they're doing "school."

Articles
These articles are meant to help you find skills that will help your child develop
Fine Motor Skills. Feel free to pick and choose what fits your childs likes and
needs. NOTE: I find it helpful to rotate activities, so that they don't get bored
and the learning stays exciting and fun, rather than like work.

Activities
These activities are great for working those finger muscles and so quick and easy
to put together.
Playdough - play dough mats, play dough tools, anything playdough works
wonders for building up those finger muscles and fine motor skills.
Here's some fun homemade recipes for each letter of the alphabet
if you don't want to buy any.
Lacing Cards - if you have lacing cards around, those are a great way to
work those fine motor skills (and hand-eye coordination too). My
girls love these.
Tracing - whether it's tracing letters or shapes, this is a fun way to improve
those fine motor skills. My kids love these and spend hours creating
scenes with what they trace. Try this fun sensory tracing idea too!
Mazes - my youngest son loves mazes - all types. He could sit and do
mazes for hours. And what I found was that it really improved his fine
motor skills and ability to trace the letters as we learned them. It was
amazing. Whether you buy a book of mazes or find printables ones
online, use them to your advantage!

Now that you have some activities to work on those Fine Motor Skills, some kids
may already be ready for pencil grasping. Pencil grasp is an extremely imporant
skill to master. Pencil grasp can mean the difference between legible and illegi-
ble handwriting.
While I was lucky that my children learned to grasp their pencils rather easily, I
see now that my oldest may not have quite the right grasp, which is causing him
pain and irritation as he writes more and more.
So, let's get this right from the beginning, shall we?

These articles are meant to help you teach proper pencil grasp to your children.
As with all other skills, children learn differently, so you may need to try different
approaches and see what works best for them.

How to Teach a Child to hold a Pencil Correctly
Activities
Continuing working on those Fine Motor Skills activities from Lesson One as they
strengthen those finger muscles. You can also do some of these activities to al-
low them to work on their pencil grasp.
Drawing - this is a fun way for kids to use their creativity and work on
holding their pencils. Let them draw what they want. Have them cre
ate stories. My kids love to draw pictures of our family, their friends
and whatever else pops into their heads.
Tracing - whether it's tracing letters or shapes, this is a fun way to also im
prove pencil grasp. My kids love these and spend hours creating

Resources
Having the best pencil when learning how to grasp, can make all the difference.
Here are some we love in our house.
These PaperMate Mates pencils are

AMAZING! Even I love them! They are
shaped like triangles, so they are easier
for little hands (or older hands, like
mine) to hold. The lead is thicker
(1.3mm) than most mechanical pencils
(1.5mm-1.7mm), so it doesn't break as
easily with the pressure little hands use to
write.
These Twist 'n Write pencils are another

great option. They are ergonomic and the
perfect size for children just learning to
grasp a pencil. This lead is even thicker
(2mm) than the Mates pencils above, which
again helps with less breakage.

Now that we have established a proper pencil grasp, we can move on to pre-
writing exercises. We're going to cover lines first.
There are 15 pages of prewriting lines. From straight to diagonal to arched/

curved to curled and more.
These prewriting exercises will help kids continue working on their pencil grip while
honing their fine motor skills. Even though these are early in their prewriting les-
sons, these are pages that can be used if you see more fine motor skills work is
needed.
NOTE: Don't worry if their pencil grip isnt perfect yet, you'll just keep working
on it throughout these lessons. Using playdough is a great way to help with their
fine motor skills and strengthening the muscles in their fingers and hands.

Articles
These articles have great activities for working those Fine Motor Skills and im-
proving handwriting in a fun way. While we have not worked on letters as of yet,
these activities are great for shapes, lines and/or alphabet formation.
Letter Formation with almost FREE materials - This idea is so much fun for kids.
A great sensory activitiy as well as letter practice.
Teach Kids Letters with Push Pin Can Lid - This needs PARENTAL SUPERVI-
SION as it uses sharp pins, but it is a fun, tactile way for kids to work on letter
formation.
Activities
The following prewriting activity worksheets are prefect for all new and emerging
writers. They are also great for working on problem areas you see as they begin
to work on their letters. You can also come back to these to work on those
strokes that are causing issues later down the road.
Resources
I have found this book, Basic Shapes for Beginners, super helpful in our hand-
writing journey. It's a great place to start if your child is having trouble with
handwriting.

Now that we have worked on some basic prewriting skills by tracing lines, we will
begin tracing shapes. These shapes vary I size so that the child can begin work-
ing on more fine motor skills and keeping their pencil steady as they write.
