INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
ANTI-ICING SYSTEM ON BOEING 727
B. The valve position switch and the valve position indicator lights located under each control
switch provide an indication of valve position. When the valve position switch is turned to the
WING position the lights will illuminate if the control valve positions agree with their respective
control switch positions. The lights will go off when the valve position switch is returned to the
OFF or Close position.
C. The duct temperature indicator and selector switch are provided to monitor TAI air supply
temperature from each engine as selected. The duct overheats light illuminates when the TAI air
supply duct temperature has exceeded 490F when the airplane is in the air or when the overheat
switch has overridden the GRD-TEST switch to prevent structural overheat when the airplane is
on the ground. Continuous illumination on the ground or in flight may indicate a shutoff valve
failure, and engine power should be reduced to prevent structural damage.
D. On airplanes equipped with a wing anti-ice auto trip-off switch, the test switch is provided
to check the operation of the wing anti-ice trip relay while the airplane is on the ground. When
the switch is actuated to the GRD-TEST position it energizes the wing anti-ice trip relay. When
the switch is actuated to the GRD-RESET position it de- energizes the wing anti-ice trip relay.
The safety relay prevents control of the wing anti-ice trip relay by the trip test switch while the
airplane is in the air. The wing anti-ice trip light illuminates when the wing anti-ice trip relay is
energized to indicate that the wing TAI system has been tripped, and the control valves have
been closed.
Q&A Section
1.How does leading edge anti-ice system operate/function?
Aircraft that utilize leading edge slats often use bleed air from the engine compressor to prevent
the formation of frost on these surfaces. On a modern transport category aircraft, the pneumatic
system supplies bleed air for this purpose. WAI valves control the air flow from the pneumatic
system to WAI ducts. The WAI ducts carry the air to the slats. Holes in the bottom of each slat
let the air out. The airfoil and cowl ice protection system (ACIPS) computer card controls the
WAI valves, and pressure sensors send duct air pressure data to the computer. The aircrew can
select an auto or manual mode with the WAI selector. In the auto mode, the system turns on
when the ice detection system detects ice. The off and on positions are used for manual control
of the WAI system. The WAI system is only used in the air, except for ground tests. The weight
on wheels system and/ or airspeed data disarms the system when the aircraft is on the ground.
An operational check of the valves can be conducted on the ground by pushing the wing anti-ice
test switch. The test switch signal bypasses the wing anti-ice switch and opens the valves if air
pressure is available. A time delay automatically closes the valves to protect the wing structure
from overheating. The valve lights illuminate when the valves are open and extinguish when the
valves are closed.
2.When overheat triggered, what will happen?
-The sensor will send a signal to anti-ice control valve and shutdown the system
-Temperature overheat trigger when the temperature rise up to 90 degree. Overheat sensor were
sent a signal to the ice control valve and shut down the system.
