This final report showcases our process and design outcomes during the User inspired design course in Aalto
University in the fall 2017. The project was done together with Vahanen Group which is the biggest Finn-
ish-owned technical consulting organizations in construction and property branch. In their website they say that
their mission is Builder of a healthy living environment.

The brief for the project was to activate the people in their neighbourhoods. Moreover, try to activate people to
design the neighbourhoods of the future. The Finnish neighbourhoods are getting to a renovation age where the
buildings need big and expensive renovations. The problem is not the renovation itself but how to empower the
residents to bigger things with their possessions. The housing co-operation could for example sell their land to pay
upcoming renovation. However, nowadays housing co-operations arent doing anything. They just pay the reno-
vation and dont raise questions about it. Thus, how to activate residents to make bigger impact in their neigh-
bourhood?

During the process City of Helsinki was organizing a festival week called Lhifest where Vahanen was biggest
sponsor. Vahanen was creating this future suburb event on Kontula where we chose to focus on.

Our objectives for the project are

Encourage people to talk about their neighbourhoods problems


Provide a platform that they can communicate with each other
Activate neighbours so that they can participate future events from Vahanen

First phase of the process was to do field work in Kontula. We created invitation
and coffee coupons to our upcoming Lhifest event and went to streets of

Our Toolkit: Kontula Tarot Card Game

30.9 Vahanen organized a Lhifest event called Experience the


Future Suburb in Kontula. During that event our team made a pop up
spot as one of the other spots in the event. In our spot people could
play a card game of the future suburb through a roleplay.

WHAT IS KONTULA TAROT CARD GAME? HOW DOES IT WORK?

We wanted to create a toolkit to encourage people to talk to us more First we asked people to choose a persona from 5 different characters

For documentation of the field work we did affinity mapping. First we wrote down all the insights we got from the interview and from the event.
Then we started to categorize them in themes of all the insights in the map. From these insights we got four main categories of ideas: Community
feeling, Green+Nature, Serivce and hotspots and Wellbeing and recreation. The social aspect was the biggest group. Thus, we decided to focus on
