9. Lodge of Instruction
Replying to the toast to the visitors, more than once a
Brother complimenting his hosts on their work in the
Temple has been heard to say sadly: My own Lodge
doesnt have a Lodge of Instruction, and Im afraid it
shows.
Some Lodges who for various reasons have a widely
scattered membership do not indeed have a Lodge of
Instruction. They usually ask each member to join
one near his home in the hope that this will make a
contribution to the standard of their ceremonies. The
majority of Lodges, however, sponsor their own
Lodges of Instruction which meet in the evenings,
weekly or fortnightly, usually with a break in the
summer months.
A Lodge of Instruction may not be set up in a
haphazard manner but must be properly authorizes in
conformity with Rules 132 and 133, B of C. It must
keep Minutes of its meetings and those Minutes must
be available for inspection by its sponsors or by any
proper Masonic authority.
Who May Attend
The principal objective of a Lodge of Instruction is
to benefit the sponsoring Lodge (or Lodges) by
affording continuous instruction and guidance to
members, and especially to prepare them for the
duties of the various offices in a Lodge. It is
therefore particularly important that every member
who may serve his Lodge by making progress
towards the Masters Chair should be encouraged to
attend regularly. This attendance will however be of
little value unless the Lodge of Instruction is well
and regularly supported by Past Masters; indeed
nothing but benefit can result if the number of Past
Masters approaches the number of junior Brethren,
as the is will mean that virtually individual help is
available if needed.
A Brother from another Lodge, not being a
sponsoring Lodge, may attend your Lodge of
Instruction provided he is a subscribing member of at
least one Lodge (Rule 127, B of C). Care should be
taken to ensure that he is properly qualified before
being admitted, just as if he were a visitor to a
regular Lodge.
When any Brother attends a Lodge of Instruction for
the first time it is conventional, though by no means

Some Lodges of Instruction have adopted By-laws to

In practice it can be expected that the Lodge of
Instruction will consist of the active and interested
members of a Lodge, all its Officers, and most of the
Lodge Committee. This makes it very unlikely that
contention will arise between these bodies, and any
possible difference of opinion can easily and quickly
be resolved.
The Officers of the Lodge of Instruction
The only permanent Officer required by the Book of
Constitutions is the Secretary. However the Lodge of
Instruction will elect one or more Preceptors, who
accept the important responsibility of instructing the
members and guiding the work. It is appropriate for
the Director of Ceremonies of a sponsoring Lodge to
be involved as closely as possible in this duty.
The Lodge of Instruction may also find it convenient
to appoint a Treasurer to collect and care for it own
subscriptions and attend to the expenses of its
meetings.
It is helpful to hold a brief Annual General Meeting
at which the Treasurer presents his accounts and the
permanent Officers - Secretary, Preceptors and
Treasurer - are elected, and any relevant matter such
as the disposal of surplus funds can be discussed and
agreed.
The Work in a Lodge of Instruction
It is not usual to wear Masonic clothing nor formal
dress at a Lodge of Instruction; but if you are
meeting at a Masonic Hall or other establishment
that is also being used by people in formal dress, it
would be a discourtesy to them to turn up in entirely
casual clothing. When the members are gathered -
promptly, we hope - each office is filled preferably
by a Brother who has prepared himself in advance. If
nobody is so prepared then agreement will be
reached that a Brother occupy the place who might

Customarily the meeting, or perhaps the two
meeting, immediately preceding a regular Lodge

rehearse the ceremonies which are to take place in
the Lodge.
The remaining meetings of the Lodge of Instruction
will be used to rehearse our three main ceremonies.
Try to ensure that they receive approximately equal
attention. Some Brethren seem to regard the
ceremony of raising as more 'difficult' than the others
but this may be because of the tendency, in some
Lodges of Instruction, to rehearse it less often.
Rehearsal of the Ceremony of Consecration in a
Lodge of Instruction is deprecated by Grand Lodge.
However it is clear that there must be times when
conscientious Brethren will wish to rehearse it, and
guidance should be sought from the appropriate
Masonic authority.
After a Brother has been chosen to occupy the
Master's Chair at the next Lodge of Instruction,
unless it is to be an Officers' Night, a convenient
procedure is to agree that the remaining Officers will
each move up one place. Thus the Brother who acted
as candidate will move to Inner Guard, the Inner
Guard to Junior Deacon and so on. The pattern is
often described as 'Officers in Rotation'. Any gap
which occur can be filled by mutual agreement. The
advantage of this arrangement is that each Brother,
knowing which office he is to fill at the next
meeting, will be able to prepare himself to his own
satisfaction. A brother who does not want to move
up in this way, because he feels he needs more
experience in a lower office or for any other reason,
may say so with confidence that he will cause no
dismay.
The Informal Benefits
Brethren readily recognise that regular attendance at
a Lodge of Instruction enables them to keep in closer
touch with the other members than they would if
they went only to the regular Lodge meetings.
This is not just a matter of getting to know the names
of new members. As soon as a regular attender fails
unexpectedly to appear, the members of the Lodge of
Instruction naturally want to know if he is well. The

pode se manifestar quanto a isso com confiana de que

Os Benefcios Informais
Os Irmos prontamente reconhecem que a regular
presena em uma Loja de Instruo lhes permite manter
mais em contato com os outros membros se eles fossem
s para os encontros regulares da Loja.

A Brother who expects shortly to reach the office of
W Master will notice the keen attenders at the Lodge
of Instruction and, well in advance of his year of
office, will form a good idea of those Brethren who
ought to be appointed or promoted. The Stewards of
the Lodge who are regular attenders are particularly
likely to be singled out for early advancement.
Indeed in many Lodges it is normal for any Officer,
up to and including the rank of Senior Warden, who
is unexpectedly absent from a regular meeting to be
replaced, at a moment's notice, by a Steward rather
than a Past Master; and for the Stewards to be
warned to hold themselves ready for such a task at
any time.
Clearly it in the Lodge of Instruction that the Past
Masters maintain their most valuable connection
with the continuing life of the Lodge. By attending
regularly they remain in circulation, realy and able to
assist the W Master by accepting some of the work
in the Lodge, and available in due course to fill a
vacant office which must be occupied by an Installed
Master. Every effort should be made to encourage
the more recent Past Masters to take an active part:
as a particular example, one of them will be an ideal
choice to fill the vacant post of Secretary of the
Lodge of Instruction.
These frequent meetings also offer an opportunity
for informal discussion of matters affecting the
regular Lodge. It can reasonably be expected that
those present will include most of the active
members of the Lodge, and also of the Lodge
Committee; and a great contribution to unanimity
and concord can be made if they have considered
together an important issue before it becomes a
formal proposition to the Lodge. Always bear in mid
the important Rule: 'The members present at any
Lodge duly summoned have an undoubted right to
regulate their own proceedings' (Rule 155, B of C).
The members of a Lodge of Instruction may agree
together on a corporate act, such as a charitable
donation, but care must be taken to show clearly that
the authors are in fact the members of the Lodge of
Instruction and that they do not act, in this respect,
on behalf of a sponsoring Lodge. Here again
discussion with the Almoner should ensure that what

Other Rehearsals
Inevitably Brethren who are keen to further their
Masonic careers will from time to time want to
rehearse our rituals outside the limits of a Lodge of
Instruction. Indeed, frequent but unsponsored
'Classes of Instruction' may be considered fairly
common. It would be difficult or impossible to
exercise formal control over all such rehearsals and
we can hardly condemn the enthusiasm of two or
three Brethren who want to 'go through the work
together', but they must always be reminded of their
duty cautiously to avoid all occasions which may
inadvertently lead them beyond the limits of their
obligations.
When any rehearsal is undertaken, at any time or in
any circumstances, care should be taken to go
through the openings and closings. This will act as a
reminder of the importance of ensuring that none are
present save those who are qualified, and that the
meeting is properly tyled. Should it be in an place,
whether building, vehicle, vessel, or aircraft, that has
any kind of voice transmission or recording
equipment, then it is the duty of the acting Officers
to make sure that it is fully isolated before the work
can proceed.
Lodges of Improvement
Brethren using Emulation Ritual are reminded that
Emulation Lodge of Improvement meets at
Freemasons' Hall in London every Friday from
October to June. It has existed since 1823 and its
purpose has been to demonstrate 'unchanged, so far
as has been humanly possible, the Masonic Ritual in
accordance with the original method'. (Emulation
Ritual: Preface to First Edition, 1969) Attendance is
restricted to Master Masons. Other bodies with
comparable objectives include the Logic Ritual
Association, Stability Ritual Association, and the
Association of Taylor's Working. To get in touch
with any of these, ask the Secretary of your Lodge.
Outros Ensaios
Inevitavelmente Irmos que esto interessados em
