Remember when you were young and fashion felt like playing dress-up? I used
to love rummaging through my mothers closet, teetering around in her too-big
heels and shoulder-padded dresses pretending that I had somewhere important to go.
Of course, as we ageand do have important places to goour approach becomes more
pragmatic. But it doesnt mean we cant recapture that magic feeling every now and again.
This month, I plan to do just that by working falls fire-engine reds, power-suiting
pieces, and 70s plaids into my wardrobe. And nothing puts pep back in my step like a great

BEAUTY
When I went away to college, I found liberation in a
bleached and dyed pixie cut, which I adorned lovingly
with glitter gel and little stars. My hair was wild and
wanted to be loved for what it was: a jagged, genderless
mess that was different every day. It didnt want to be
constricted or forced into submission, and neither did I.
We worked well together, that pixie cut and I. And my
willingness to experiment earned me free color and cuts
from stylists around town, who in return asked only for
a photo they could put in their portfolios.
After college, I grew out my locks and became a
nomad, working all over the world in whatever job I
could find to support my writing habit: deckhand, chef,
yoga teacher, bartender. I also learned that getting better
tips was as simple as having long blonde hair, so I had
my natural light brown bleached in a cheap New York
City salon with chemicals that stampeded my nose,
assaulted my brain cells, and fried my ends. Since I
couldnt get the frazzled debris to grow past my shoul-
ders, I often relied on a clip-in polyester ponytail from
the drugstore to get to a money-making length.
Between these memorable styles, there were periods
of blah, when I didnt bother with styling or coloring or
even brushing, and my mousy locks turned a washed-
out shade of oblivion, pulled back into a perpetual
bun for yoga. When my hair said nothing, my life was
in stasis. But never for long. At the end of a terrible
relationship with an older mana significant stretch of
financial insecurity and dependencyI sold a feature
script that bought me freedom and a new style: a stun-
ning dyed-black Mohawk with extensions that cascaded
down my back. It was fierce, androgynous, sexy, and
warrior-like. I loved that cut and tried not to think
about the extensions, which were apparently made
with hair that came from an Indonesian temple where

temple keepers gathered it to sell to Westerners.
Maybe some of the negative vibes remained, because
it was that beloved Mohawk that attracted the man

HEALTH UPDATE
t
Could rehab be the path to a healthy weight? Katherine Laidlaw reports on
new programs that treat sugar as an addictive substance
he night before Sarah L. made her third
trip to a treatment center for help manag-
ing her weight, she and a friend went out
for a last supper. First, they had all-you-
can-eat ribs and corn bread; then they sat
in the car scooping fudge sundaes from
plastic McDonalds cups. From there, they
filled bags with Reeses Pieces at Bulk
Barn and took them home, stuffing them
into their mouths by the handful. I was
still bingeing on the candy on my way to
the facility the next morning, she says.
Sarah, 35, a palliative-care nurse from North Delta,
British Columbia, has always had a complicated relation-
ship with food. When she was 5, shed sneak banana-
chocolate muffins from the Tupperware container her
mom kept in the freezer. By 11, she was stealing money
from her parents to fund her candy habit. At 13, she began
to purge. I just loved food and wanted to eat a lot, and
then Id feel guilty, so Id throw up, she says. I overate and
couldnt stop. As a teen, shed steal candy and chocolate
from her jobs at a local gas station and grocery store.
Playing softball and swimming kept her fit, but she still
carried extra weight on her 5'8" frame and tried every
strategy availableJenny Craig, Atkins, Herbalife, laxatives,
diuretics, diet pills, stimulantsto get rid of it.
At her peak weight, Sarah was 33 years old and 192
pounds, which wasnt heavy enough to label her a binge
eater and qualify her for an eating-disorder program paid
for by Canadas universal health-care system. But maybe
thats a good thing, because binge eating is only part of
her problem. Sarah is an addict, and at Renascent, the
Toronto facility she checked in to that morning, she was
treated right alongside women hooked on cocaine, heroin,
meth, and opioids.
While that may sound extreme, researchers are begin-
ning to realize that sugar (not just the sweet white stuff,
but other simple carbs, too) is more like a drug than we
ever realized. Eating a handful of Skittles, for example,
triggers a release of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that
helps control the brains pleasure center. Sugar has also
been shown to lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol,
meaning its comfort food in the most literal sense. One
Connecticut College study conducted on rats found that
consuming Oreos fires up more of the brains pleasure-
center neurons than injections of cocaine and morphine

frequently you consume sugar, the less dopamine (and everywhere,
and other simple
pleasure) you get from it, so over time youre driven to eat carbs can be as
more to reach the same rush. Its the heroin of food, says addictive as the
