Programming
The VCADS Pro Programming program is used to pro-
gram vehicles using D12A or EDC Multiplex electrical
control systems.

The following functions are available for vehicles with

Multiplex electrical systems:

Replace ECU: This function is used to re-program

an ECU with all the required software. Connection
to Volvo is required.

Campaign: Volvo informs users when campaign

programming is to be carried out and to which vehi-
cles the campaign applies. Connection to Volvo is
required.

Conversion kit: Connection to Volvo is required to

program the accessory kit.

Instrument language: This function allows you to

program up to three different languages in the in-
strument. Connection to Volvo is required.

Parameters: There are two types of parameters that

can be programmed, vehicle parameters and cus-
tomer parameters. The vehicle parameters are
either for optional extras or are legally required and
require connection to Volvo. The customer parame-
ters do not require connection to Volvo. They can be
programmed locally.

User ID
Each VCADS Pro user has a personal user ID and pass-
word. Several user Ids can be stored on the same
computer.

The user ID is assigned by Volvo and cannot be

changed. There are different categories of user. The
user ID is linked to one of these categories. Access
is provided to the different functions in VCADS Pro
depending on the user category.

Workshop ID
A workshop ID is installed in the computer. Only one
workshop ID can be installed. The workshop ID is saved
in the relevant control unit during programming. This
makes it possible to check which workshop carried out
the most recent programming at a later date.

User information
Note: The telephone line that is used must be a direct
external analogue line. The telephone line must not be
routed via an exchange. This is to ensure communica-
tion between Volvo and VCADS Pro.

Note: Under no circumstances should other programs

be installed on the VCADS Pro PC. Programs not in-
stalled by Volvo compromise the functions in VCADS
Pro. Changing settings without advice from Volvo or the
user manual may result in operating problems. Update
VCADS Pro at least once a week to ensure that the lat-
est version is being used.

The DigiPass password generator and associated start

code are not supplied initially but are sent out separately.
The password generator is sent out first and then the
start code is supplied shortly afterwards.

Unless the help desk has received information concern-

ing problems with the delivery within 30 days of receipt,
Volvo Parts Corporation will consider the equipment to
be in working order and complete.
The disc supplied is used to retrieve user IDs from the
Volvo database. This routine is completed before deliv-
ery. Keep the disc in a safe place.

Service Manual contents

This Service Manual describes VCADS Pro version
1.4.0.

To begin with, there is an introduction to the program

and a description of the tools that are required to use
VCADS Pro.

Instructions are then provided about starting VCADS Pro

for the first time. This section includes how to download
your user ID from Volvo and how to choose a personal
password.

The description of the software is divided into Start

VCADS Pro, Main Menu, Test and Calibration, Program-
ming and Job card.

In each section, a description of the available functions

is given first. The components in the windows are de-
scribed at the end of each section. The description of
the component should be seen as an overview where
each component in the window is described briefly.
After the description of functions and window compo-
nents, there is a section that describes connecting to the
vehicle.

Finally, there are a few basic Windows 95 functions.

There is also a list of suggestions for solving problems
encountered when running of the program.

Design and function

The programming unit can either be supplied with voltage from the cigarette lighter
socket in the cab or from the battery via cable 9808563. For markets that use 12 V as
a supply voltage, the 24 V relay in the programming unit must be replaced with a 12 V
relay.

One of the switches on the programming unit is used to connect (position ON) and
break (position OFF) the supply voltage to the connected control unit. The other switch
has two positions, A and B. Position A is used when programming the vehicle control
unit and control system D12A. Position B is used when programming other control units.

On the top there is an LED. The LED is lit during part of the programming procedure.

When the control unit is directly connected, it can be loaded with complete software
packages. Any previous software in the control unit is overwritten. The customer pa-
rameters are automatically read from the control unit before new software is transferred
from Volvo. When the control unit has been programmed with the new software, the
customer parameter settings are entered into the control unit again.

Important: Turn off the power supply to the control unit before connecting and discon-
necting the cables!

Password generator
Note: The Digipass (password generator) is personally issued. It must not be lent to
others. If the holder leaves employment, this must be reported to the importer.

A password is needed each time a connection is made to Volvo. The password is

different each time. A Digipass is used to generate a correct password. Read the in-
structions for the relevant Digipass carefully.

Blocked Digipass
For your security, the function of your Digipass will be
blocked if you or anyone else enters the wrong PIN code
three times in a row. The function of the Digipass will not
be restored by simply switching it off between attempts.
Full Digipass functionality is restored if the correct PIN
code is entered after one or two incorrect attempts. This
means that three new attempts can be made at the next
log-in. If the Digipass is blocked, contact: VAS +32 92 55
69 00.

Blocking the Digipass

Contact the importer if you want to block your Digipass
because it is lost or if you suspect that it may be mis-
used for other reasons.

Two Digipass models

There are two Digipass models: Digipass 500 and Digi-
pass 300.

Dealing with a defective Digipass

If the Digipass 500 stops working for any reason, it must
be sent to the importer.

Contact VAS if Digipass 300 is blocked. If Digipass 300

is still not functioning after contact with VAS, it must be
sent to the importer.

The Test and Calibration applications have the same construction and functions, and
therefore will be described together.

Individual test procedures will not be described here. A few typical tests form the basis
for general instructions and examples.

Most tests are made up of standard components. This means that the same proce-
dures can be used for all the tests. Instructions for how each individual test is to be
carried out are available in the application.

Starting VCADS Pro Test/Calibration

An identification dialogue is displayed when the Test or
Calibration program has been selected from the Main
menu. This dialogue lists the electrical system, method
of matching and the model.

Note: VCADS Pro PC must be connected to the vehicle

before identification is carried out.

Identification
This dialog box is used to identify the vehicle.

1 Select the electrical system(1).

2 Select the matching method (2).

only those tests and calibrations available for
the relevant vehicle. Connection to both the ve-
hicle and Volvo. The vehicle configuration is
retrieved from Volvo. (Only possible for the Mul-
tiplex electrical system)

Communication socket
For communication with control units connected to the
SAE J1708/J1587 data link (instrument, engine, vehicle,
ABS etc.), the 8pin socket, yellow (2) is used.

The 4pin black socket (1) is intended for simplified EOL

programming which will be covered in future service bul-
letins.

The 16pin grey socket (3) is at present only used only T0009432
for communication via ISO 9141 with C- and, where ap-
plicable L lines (e.g. ECS and the turntable control unit).
Further communication is planned via this socket. This
will be described in future service bulletins.

VDA (Vehicle Data Administration)

What is VDA?
VDA is a database with vehicle specifications that is
used globally within Volvo. It is important to always up-
date VDA so that it contains the correct information. VDA
contains the following information for each chassis:

general information

variant description

vehicle components

customer adaptation

software

control unit parameters

When a vehicle is built, a great deal of information about

the vehicle is stored in VDA. The information in VDA
forms the basis for:

warranty handling

quality follow-up

possible campaigns/service measures

VCADS Pro (tool for diagnosis and programming)

replacement parts

VDA is updated when:

important components with new part numbers or

new serial numbers are replaced on the vehicle.

vehicle specification revisions.

new and important components are installed on the

vehicle.

Note: It is ESSENTIAL that VDA is updated throughout

the operational life of the vehicle.

VDA is updated automatically via VCADS Pro for many

components. For some components, the mechanic must
contact VAS TST (Volvo Action Service Technical Sup-
port Team) to update the part number and/or serial
number in VDA.

95
Group 00 VCADS Pro User Manual Design and Function

Why update VDA?

VCADS Pro is used to communicate with the vehicle.
VCADS Pro uses VDA as a data bank when program-
ming.

In order to ensure vehicle functionality and correct com-

ponents and software in the future, it is:

ESSENTIAL that the mechanic contacts VAS TST

(Volvo Action Service Technical Support Team)
whenever important components with new part num-
bers or serial numbers are replaced on the vehicle.
See the list Components that must be updated in
VDA page 97.

What happens if VDA is NOT updated?

Incorrect information in VDA will mean the customer re-
ceives the wrong:

software

replacement parts

accessories

This can result in loss of functions, breakdowns, down

time, problems when fault tracing or the vehicle warranty
becoming invalid.
Note: It is ESSENTIAL that VDA is updated.

Automatic update
For so called Campaign programming in VCADS
Pro, VCADS Pro updates VDA automatically.

Manual update
VAS TST must be contacted whenever important
components are replaced. See Components that
must be updated in VDA page 97.
