ASSIGNMENT NO # 2

LANGUAGE VARIATIONS AND STYLISTICS

CODE NO 556

Q.1 An Example Of Utterance.

Part (A) If you dont mind, I want you to hook up yours from my seat
Though semantically and grammatically this statement is
quite correct yet stylistically it is quite a blunder. Because it contains such
words as are very very offensive and may cause a severe quarrel.
It should have been spoken like this.
If you dont mind may I ask you to leave my seat, please.
Or in just in an utterance as Leave my seat, please.
Part. (B) A college teacher is saying in the assembly as All the students are
categorically advised to keep themselves up according to the college
watch and college etiquettes. You must not dare go out during college
times and keep yourself in student conduct. Only appropriate and educated
behavior is expected from the old Mansoorians in the college premises.
Here are many words in this paragraph that suggests that it has
been spoken in the particular context by a particular concerned person.
The words like college watch, student etiquette, college premises are
typically used in only an educational institution. This style is highly
objective and rigid. The speaking person is not directly involved in the
situation emotionally and speaking from a reasonable distance keeping
himself aloof from the students. And the context is the application of
college rules in the college premises.
Q. 2. Aim & Subject Matter.
The two newspaper reports are quite different from
each other. The first one is aimed at the art of politicking keeping in mind
the specificities of the target audience and interlocutor. Khans interview
has been presented in a report style comprising most of the original
sentences. Each paragraph consists of a separate theme as the first one is
about the skepticism, while the second is about the doubts. The third one
is about the political intentions, while the fourth one is about the foreign
policy. Fifth is about doubts over coming election and the sixth is about
the required leadership. In the same way the seventh is about overseas
working force and the last one is about the justice reforms. All in all the
discourse has the aim to criticize governmental policies and propagation of
his own ideals. And the purpose is to attract population to use as a tool in
the coming election. While the second is an article type, travelogue and
erudite discourse. Its aim is to convey specific impressions and feelings.
Every paragraph is rather a copious one than the first report type. Here the
overall subject matter is the description of a travel, its effects and serenity
of the atmosphere. First paragraph is about the why and where to travel.

1
Second is about the intended to travel place third is about the visited
place fourth is about the observation of the terrain they traveled and the
last one is about the morality. The overall aim is just to give aesthetic taste
to the reader and the description of serene and exquisite and green
landscape Pakistans Capitol. And the subject matter is about traveling,
experiences, observation and impressions.
STYLISTIC COLOURING.
Stylistically the first one is a newspaper report in which the writer
keeps himself aloof from his readers. He is passionately not involved and
remained objective. This is a typical characteristic of journalism. Most of
the lines have been used original one. Many objectives have been given a
light touch in just one written piece. The language is dry and passionless.
And the second one is typically personal article. It is full of beautiful
emotional words. Here the writer is steeped in his feelings and writes
about his personal experience and observations. This method is adopted to
arouse feeling and passions to involve the readers emotions. Travelogue
touch and landscape coloring has been given here and there. Erudition has
been projected and in the last there is a touch of literary references to
induce moral plan.
HEADLINES.
The headline of the first one is quite striking. Here instead of doubts
there should have been is skeptic about. Its intention is to catch or arrest
readers eyes and then grip his mind, create disturbance about countrys
matters. While the second headline is quite suitable. It tells us instantly
that like high ups, the dwelling of erudite and elite people is also of the
same type town. As silence is a marked feature in an elite colony, it is the
same with their city. However there is an interesting quality in her serene
highness depicting the same imperious aura as it is the characteristics of
the elite class.
GRAMMATICAL CHOICES.
In the first article report the reporter has used direct and indirect narration
extensively using same erupted sentences and sometimes replacing them
with pithy structures for example Khan said and He said. There is an
extensive use of future tense both in past as well as in present for
example he would be around and he would seek partnership. Most of
the sentences are filled with will be that is a possibility or should that
is an obligation.
However in the second article, there is mostly past tense used: for example
in the very first paragraph I decided and the in the second I awoke
and that is past indefinite or past perfect. Most of nouns have been well
qualified with erudite and assonant adjectives as in the third paragraph
impressive experience and fashion shoot and in the fourth paragraph
blue-green palette of undulating hills. There is no simple sentence
structure. Sentences are highly complicated with occasional striking
beginning as n the case of Paragraph no 3 and second last paragraph.
However this is not the case with the first repost.

2
VOCABULARY AND PARAGRAPHING.
Vocabulary of the first article has been used mainly form political arena
and it is used daily in political business. There are no compound words or
adjectives to qualify nouns. Most of the jargons of the political arena are
of ordinary nature manifesto, relations, dispute, elections, and reforms.
But the case of second article is different. Here the vocabulary is erudite.
There are a lot of diverse jargons for example in the first paragraph
manic glory and somnolent elegance of Islamabad and word about
travels, agriculture and landscape for example in the sixth paragraph the
use of lonesome precipice and rugged mounds of rock. There are a lot
of words that are not used in our day to day content for example in the first
paragraph there is somnolent and in the second paragraph there is
cacophony. And our own landscape has been compared with that of the
western landscapes, so it the use of the exotic vocabulary is
understandable. In short the second one is verbose and erudite.
As for as paragraphing is concerned, the first article has nine graphs.
There are small paragraphs only consisting of 2 or 3 sentences. Most of
the sentences are simple and in direct form. There are total 9 paragraphs.
But the second article consists of 8 paragraphs and there are unusually
long sentence. Each paragraph consists of more than five sentences. And
most of the sentences are quite complicated. The first report aims at the
listener but second one is for the readers just for readings sake.
Q.3 REPORT OF THE INTERVIEW
Speaking in an interview the most renowned artist Meera said that her
father was a magistrate from Sheikhupura shifted to Lahore with her
school teacher mother. She further told that it was Jarrar Razvi who
introduce her to film industry and Javed Sheikh who introduced her in his
first debut Chief Sahaib. Her family opposed but later resigned and she
signed Mdm Ara, she said.
About her latest hit Khoey Ho Tum Kahann she said, I am thankful to
Almighty and am also thankful to my public who went cinema to see my
movie.
On questioning about Guls coming movie and conflict with Zara Sheikh
she said that she did serious roles in the same of her previous hits but
now, she said, she had reverted to comedy. She denied any conflict at all
with Zara.
I performed my role in a natural way and I think it was also according to
the requirement of character, she commented on her acting performance.
She told that acting is difficult to define. It is something like to perform
and portray a character.
About commercialism and professionalism in the industry she said, That
is because of lack of educated people in the industry. The literacy rate of
the audience also counts a lot. She said.
And commenting on her personal life she said that the secret of her fitness
and agility is simple food and exercise. She is sort tempered and mostly

plays badminton during her stay with her family. She told that she liked
action comedy role.
Q.4 HEADLINE FROM DIFFEREN NEWSPAPERS
1. PUNJAB GOVT. IMPOSES BAN ON PILLION RIDING.
(The News) 2nd March.
2. US CONSULAE ATTACKER WAS PROMISED MONEY.
3. PLAN FOR POST WAR IRAQ. (Daily Times) 2nd March.
4. TOP QAEDA SUSPECT AMONG THREE ARRESTED IN FBI
RAID.
1:- Punjab Govt. Imposes Ban On Pillion Riding. (The News on
Sunday 2nd March)
Grammatically this headline is in present tense and forceful. General
rule of putting headlines in passive verb has been ignored. The letters
are in 18 font bold type, Roman shape. Graphetically it is arresting to
the eyes of general public. But grammatical simplicity has a purpose of
conveying clear-cut meanings that double riding on motor bikes is not
allowed. All the words are quite simple and convey their meanings
without any ambiguity. Ban and imposes suggest the rigidity and
inflexibility. While the ban is somewhat informal word. Here the
reporter should have used not allowed whose connotations are
lenient. And it immediately strikes a great panic in the given context
that most of the middle class families use bikes for transportation.
2:- US CONSULATE ATTACKER WAS PROMISED MONEY.
( The News on Sunday 2nd March)
This is also a simple grammatically and in a traditional newspaper
passive form. Noun has been coined forcibly which is quite unusual.
And the purpose is to give brevity for covering short space. It arrests
readers attention in away that the attacker was promised money. He is
actually a tool in the hands of some invisible group. It creates
sympathy for the attacking body as his poverty has forced him to take
up the step otherwise, he might have not done that. In formal English
attacker is not used generally.
3:- Plan for pos-war Iraq. (Daily Times on Sunday 2nd March)
This head line is quite simple. There is no verb, or model verb. It is
eye-catching, as sends the readers emotions to the height. As there is a
compound word post-war that immediately makes the reader aware
that war is inevitable. It even creates sympathy for the suffering
country. It seems that it is quite unjustified. This is rather informal to
predict unpredictable. Simplicity lies in the use of just four word but
these four words have a large impact on the readers mind.
4. Top Qaeda Suspect Among Three Arrested In FBI Raid. (The
News on Sunday 2nd March)
This is a simple headline from the face value. Grammatically it is also
simple as it seems passive yet there is no auxiliary. But next it seems
in past tense. And the target audience is expected to be the
sympathizers as there is the word suspect not criminal. It may be the

4
view of the reporter as well as yet it has not been proved. And the
other arrested are not as suspect as the TOP QAEDA is. Informality of
the headline lies in the use of noun as TOP QAEDA and three arrested
are not related to one an other so why the use of FBI?
5. US Clashes with Anti-War States ( DAWN on Saturday 8 th
March)
This is the headline that appears on Saturday in the daily DAWN. It is
quite simple grammatically but graphetically it is in 24 font Roman
type. The purpose of the headline seems to create a panic among the
readers. In the context where there are a large majority of people
against the US it is likely to create more jubilant moods among the
readers. Grammatically it is in present tense that seems appropriate
and noun is well qualified by the object anti-war states.

THE END
