THE New Scene Live youth centre has been given the prestigious Queen’s Award for its
work with the local community.
Local volunteer Audrey Hodgkinson, a supporter of the centre, said: “It was a well
deserved honour for all the wonderful people, staff and volunteers alike involved. It must
be a tremendous amount of work they carry out, to make such a difference to so many
individuals.”

Tennis courts are a good deal better

WORK has taken place to give a facelift to the main tennis courts in Hoole.
The local council and Hoole Tennis Club joined forces in a deal to clean and repaint the

the next three years.

HOOLE CofE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Fair brings community together

The Hoole C of E Primary School Summer Fair was a real community event bringing
together the school with local residents and Hoole businesses. The fair was raising money
for new outdoor learning equipment for the school.
It was opened by the Chester Town Crier, Mr. David Mitchell and attractions included the
traditional favourites such as ‘splat the teacher’, a coconut shy and ‘hook a duck’. Pupils
performed song and dance routines watched by their friends and family, and doing a
roaring trade was the barbecue run by two of Marco Pierre White’s top chefs from the MPW
Steakhouse, Bar and Grill at the Doubletree by Hilton Chester.
Fresh from the stocks, a soaking wet Acting Head teacher Steve Williams said “This
Fair has been an excellent example of what can be achieved when school, parents and
community work together. It has been a lovely afternoon and a great end to the school
year”.
Also present at the fair was new head teacher Miss Cheryl Walton who will join the school
in September and was enjoying getting to know pupils and parents.
The fair was organised by the School’s PTA and afterwards Jackie Davis (vice chairman)
said “I’m delighted that all the hard work that the pupils, teachers, parents, volunteers
and generous donors and sponsors has been rewarded. Particular thanks must go to the
businesses in Hoole whose generosity has been amazing.”

Russell brings car park wall to life

Hoole artist Russell Kirk, has begun a city centre commission with the help of local
primary schools to bring life to The Grosvenor Shopping Centre’s newly launched car park.
The city’s main shopping centre recently unveiled the £1million refurbishment of its
Newgate Street car park with improved security, lifts, surface and the introduction of family
parking spaces.
To celebrate the upgrade, three Cheshire primary schools won an art competition to
design silhouettes representing the city. The winning designs are now starting to take
shape as Russell begins to recreate the designs over the next few weeks.
Mr Kirk previously held one-to-one art
workshops with the school children from the

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett

Q. I have purchased a cream that claims to ‘act like botox’,

but after six weeks of use I have seen very little difference
in my wrinkles. Are there really creams that can achieve the
same effect as botox?
A. The short answer is: No! Due to the effectiveness of
Botox for softening lines and wrinkles, many cosmetic
manufacturers have jumped onto the ‘wrinkle softening
bandwagon’ and have made all types of promises that are
just not justified. A recent study* published in Dermatologic
Surgery pitted Botox, against a placebo saline injection, and
three different cosmetic products, that claimed
superiority to ‘act like botox’.
There were 77 women divided into groups of five
to participate in the study. An outside investigator
measured wrinkle improvements in the skin
using the Facial Wrinkle Scar scale, at weeks
4, 8 and 12 after the treatments. The independent
examiner noted the most improvement with the
patients treated with Botox. There was a minimal
difference between the placebo injection of saline Angela Bartlett is a beauty and

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

12

One Sunday morning, a young couple entered a church just before

services were to begin. Although the young couple and their clothes
were spotlessly clean, he wore jeans, a tee –shirt and trainers and
she wore a relatively short skirt with a tee shirt and high heeled
shoes. They both had ear and nose piercings and she was wearing
make up.
The church they entered was in a very upmarket and exclusive part of the city.
It was the largest and most beautiful church the young couple had ever seen.
The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and
fine jewellery. As the young couple took a seat, the others moved away from
them. No one greeted, spoke to, or welcomed them. They were all appalled
by their appearance and did not attempt to hide it.
As the young couple were leaving the church, the minister approached
them and asked the young couple to do him a favour. “Before you
come back in here again, have a talk with God and ask him what he Andy Glover has lived in
thinks would be appropriate attire for worship in church.” The young couple Hoole with his wife Sue
assured the minister they would.
for 20 years. Andy began
The next Sunday, they showed back up for the services wearing the same at Hoole Baptist Church,
jeans, tee shirts, short skirt high heels and ear and nose piercings. Once on Westminster Road,
again they were completely shunned and ignored. The minister approached
as Youth Pastor, before
the young couple and said, “I thought I asked you to speak to God before
you came back to our church.” becoming the Pastor and
now Team Leader.
“We did,” they replied. “And what was his reply?” asked the minister. “Well,
sir, God told us that he didn’t have a clue what we should wear. He said he’d
never been in this church.”
I don’t know when was the last time you went to church, I’m not talking about a wedding, baptism or
funeral I mean a regular Sunday morning! When you think of a Sunday Service maybe words like boring,
cold, unwelcoming irrelevant spring to mind? Maybe you have had a bad experience of church or a falling
out with a church leader or simply you re too busy to spend a Sunday morning in church! What ever the
reason or impression of church you just don’t go!
I wonder if I can get you to think about a couple of ways to possibly (re) connect with your local church?
The churches here in Hoole have a number of activities for children and young people many of these
take place on a weekday daytime or evening. If you have children of any ages from 0 to 18 you’ll find
something for them to get involved with. What about coming onto the Alpha Course – this course runs for
7 weeks and starts with an introduction meal and evening on September 23rd. Discover how the Alpha
Course has introduced more than 2 million people in the UK to the Christian faith in a fun, relaxed and
friendly setting. The course and materials are free and if you want to know more about the Christian faith,
or you just want the chance to chat about what it means to be a Christian, then the Alpha Course is for
you. Finally Sunday 26th September is Back to Church Sunday, a national initiate where this Sunday
is particularly focussed on welcoming people to a Sunday Service. This is what one person said, “I was
surprised when I got to the church that morning. It was different to what I’d imagined, and the people were
very friendly. I didn’t feel like they were trying to shove religion down my throat, they let me make up my
own mind. It was a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, just like one big family. I would recommend it
to others: you never know where it could lead you. My whole life has changed completely in the last year.”
I hope that this September you might consider (re) connecting with your local church – here in Hoole I’m
sure you’ll find a warm welcome.

You possess a mind, not merely twisted but actually sprained.
