Dear
Hi my dear friend, I think you will be interested to read this story which I just finished
reading a minute ago. It is entitled Tanjong Rhu. It really took me back to my
grandmothers village when I was 6 years old.
I found that the story made me realize about the generation gap between the older and the
younger generations. I am experiencing this effect right now. What I learnt from this story is
that I need to spend more time with my grandmother and give her due respect without
arguing much about the way she thinks. I do not want to regret later. I want to serve her
while she is still alive.
I personally feel that this story is a touching and interesting one. It made me feel that family
ties are important in each family. It is essential to families to build better relationships
among the family members; bringing them closer. Hence family members tend to have a
much better understanding about each other. As a result, they are able to live in a harmonious
and loving atmosphere.
I hope you will read it and I am sure you will enjoy the story.
Mr. Li recalls the day he bought his mother a pair of binoculars. He wanted his mother to
use them to have a better view of Tanjong Rhu; instead Ah Ma recollects her past memory of
Tanjong Rhu. She wanted Mr. Li to remember his roots and who he was before he became a
successful businessman. When Ah Ma passed away, Mr. Li realized that he had forgotten to
take care of the altar which was a traditional practice of the Chinese
6. A. Tanjong Rhu
B. Ah Mas traditional values contradict Mr.Lis and Yings modern ideas and ways of
thinking.
8. Ah Ma was taken ill. Ah Mas last words were about the keys to the drawer of the altar,
hidden in a special place.
9. Falling Action: a) Mr. Li rushed home and went into the altar room
b) Mr. Li did not know where the key was, so all he could do was to talk to
his demised mother
10. Resolution: Mr. Li realized that the family tradition and rituals are important. He also
realized that he had forgotten to take care of the altar which his mother wanted him to do
before she died.

surrendered his tradition.

Give your reasons.
He began writing to universities in America for information. He can be said to have initiative
and diligence. He took the initiative to get the necessary information and he was diligent to
do so for the rest of the year.
He learnt about the universities and the strange and interesting course available. It was a
whole new world waiting for him.

No, she did not and told them to stop playing with her.
The narrator

She reacted by asking about the money required and how they would get it.

a) How much money was needed? What was the money needed for?
The amount would be more than three thousand shillingsand it was for spending purposesand
the plane ticket.
b) How did Aloo plan to solve the problem? Do you think this is the correct solution?
Aloo suggested they make a loan and he would work while studying and send the money
back to mother. I think this is the right way to do it and many students have done it.
The following is a short story studies in the literature component in English Language.
With close reference to the text, how far is this true of the short story you have read.
The story Leaving is about awomanin Tanzania who raisedher five children single-handedly.
She made sure her children had a good future. The youngest boy wanted to further his studies
in America.
He took the trouble to write to American universities to get information about their
courses and schorlarships.Mother just smiled at this busy letter writing. She teased him about
this.Eventually, an offer of a place and a schorlarship from the California Institute of
Technology came to Aloo. A conflict arose as mother was not willing to let her son leave
home and go to such a faraway place. He might have a good future and a good education but
she was not willing to let him go.
Aloo was determined to accept the offer while mother was just as determined not to
allow him to leave. Besidesthe problem of not wanting him to go, mother brought up the
problem of finance. She refused to listen to Aloos suggestionof solving the money problem.
Tension built up and mother was angry while Aloo cried and even shouted at mother in
anger.
But, unfortunately allthe strife and difference of opinion did not affect their family
ties. In fact it made mother and son understand each other better. The narrator began to look
at her mother in a different light, as a person and not as a mother. She realized the hard life
and sufferings her mother went through.
Thus, it is true to say that difference of opinion strengthens rather than weakens the
family unit.

c) Ying believes her grandmother will recover soon/ Ying loves her grandmother so
b) The younger generation does not understand the proper way to pray to the ancestors
3.
The part of the story I would change is the scene in the hospital. Mr. Li would ask his mother
the question about his childhood and she would be able to answer him. Mr. Li would have a
satisfaction of talking to his mother and sharing the flashback of his childhood days that he
heeded when his mother told him what she saw through the binoculars.
After that, she would tell him where she hid the key to the drawer. I think that this would
give the story a more hopeful ending. Mr. Li would not have to live with so many regrets.
He would be able to revisit his memories of his happy and carefree childhood. If he could
accept the reality of his background, he would be a happier man.
Besides, if he had the key to the drawer, he would be able to continue the traditional practice
of ancestral worship. This too would free him of guilt because he would be able to do what
he knew his mother would want him to do. Changing this part of the story would lead to a
happier ending.
