“They have started to uncover parts of two stone built ‘guard chambers’ on the interior of the
entrance and the sockets that would have originally contained the timber gate posts.

Mouth Matters – could my pet have bad teeth?
by Barnhouse Veterinary Surgery

Approximately 85% of pets over 3 years old have

periodontal disease and very often this is a direct result of
their owners not having a dental regime in place.
Regular teeth and gum care for our pets is very easy to overlook
and if teeth are not brushed regularly, problems are likely to
occur. Periodontal disease begins with dental plaque and if this
is not treated, leads to tartar, bad breath (hence the expression
dog breath!!) and eventually tooth loosening. Sometimes a scale
and polish will be needed, in more severe cases tooth extraction
may be necessary.
As always, prevention is better than cure, so help your pet keep
their teeth nice and healthy by feeding them dry food, regularly
brushing their teeth with veterinary formulated tooth paste and
feeding them dental chews.
September 2010 is National Pet Smile Month so why not take
the opportunity to have your pet’s teeth checked out. Most Veterinary Surgery’s offer free dental
clinics with their Veterinary Nurses which include a check-up and advice on general dental care
and brushing.

THE BuNBuRy CARE AGENCy
The Tarporley Talk visited Bunbury Care Agency’s new premises on Tarporley High Street
THE first floor office is buzzing when we arrive, with phones ringing and business
meetings taking place. It is certainly more accessible and visible than their previous
premises near Cholmondeley Castle.
The mother and daughter team of Leila Potter and Sarah Green, who jointly run the
agency, met us and showed us around.
“We have been running the Agency from a small office for all these years so this move
represents a big change for us,” said Sarah.
“Although we have clients from Northumberland down to Kent, this move is about
raising our profile in the local community.”
It was interesting to find out the scope of activities undertaken by the agency, from
carers for the elderly, through to housekeepers and nannies.
The duo team take their responsibilities seriously – something that comes with the territory of running a business
which affects many people’s lives. Leila is fighting for better care for the elderly, especially with those who suffer
from dementia. At present she is trying to prevent the withdrawal
of services at local Day Care Centres.
Sarah is also very committed to raising the standards of
recruitment for childcare in the home, and actively works with
fellow members of the Association of Nanny Agencies and the
British Au Pair Agencies Association campaigning for better
regulation and higher standards.
Sarah said: “After over 40 years in the caring industry it gives us
Sarah at work in the new office great pleasure to make a difference to the quality of people’s lives.”

Parking problems continue

Hello and here is the latest
monthly update. There have
been a few things happening
in the village since the last
update.
It has been brought to our
attention that there are still
problems with parking on
Nantwich Road with regards
to clients using the dental
practices. We would remind
you that there is parking
available at the community
centre and please be
considerate to the residents
on Nantwich Road.
Since the school summer
holidays started we have
received an increasing number of complaints
regarding anti social behaviour, including committing low level criminal damage
and setting small fires on the playing fields at the community centre and the bowling
club. We have spoken to a number of youths involved in this. I would like to thank
the people that have reported incidents to us and to also reiterate the importance of
reporting anti social behaviour as and when it occurs on the main police number on
0845 4580000.
Four males from Liverpool have been arrested for attempting to break into the British
School on Eaton Road.
We are currently in the first day of a traffic enforcement week in the village, and so
far we have issued four endorsable fixed penalty notices for parking on the zig-zag
markings. We will be reporting back to the parish council with regards to hopefully
coming up with a solution to help the parking problem on the High Street.

If you have any questions or see me on patrol please feel free to stop and chat or
alternatively contact either myself or PC Ged Gigg at Dragon Hall Police Station
Whitchurch Road Tattenhall CH3 9DU, Tel 0845 4586377 or email me on

FOOTBALL TALK...
TARPORLEY VICS FC

Taylor-made start to the season

Tarporley Vic’s FC made an impressive start in the First Division of the Cheshire Building
Society Cheshire League with a hard fought but entertaining 0-0 draw at home to Golbourne
Sports FC.
All the pre-season preparation worked well as the Vics dominated the first half and the
Golbourne keeper made two outstanding saves to keep the scores level. Golbourne’s
stronger physical presence came to the fore as the second half developed however neither
side could break the stalemate.
Midweek night games ensure the early season fitness and squad availability will be tested.
August fixtures includes away matches to Middlewich Town FC and Lynotype/Cheadle Heath
FC with last Season’s Division Two champions Lostock Gralam FC visiting Tattenhall. The
results of these games will define the difficulty of securing Division One status.
Please come down to the “Flacca” and support Tarporley Vics in the First Division of the

THE recent Darnhall Village Day was judged a big
success with over 300 visitors.
Highlight of the Day was undoubtedly the first
Miss Darnhall competition which drew the largest
crowd and much applause for all the contestants.
Winner of the Darnhall Princess sash and tiara
for ages 4 to 7 was Izzy Kay, while the winner of
the Darnhall Queen honours for ages 8 to 11 was
Danielle Wallis.
The day raised over £1000 towards the cost of

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett

Q. I have purchased a cream that claims to ‘act like botox’,

but after six weeks of use I have seen very little difference
in my wrinkles. Are there really creams that can achieve the
same effect as botox?
A. The short answer is: No! Due to the effectiveness of
Botox for softening lines and wrinkles, many cosmetic
manufacturers have jumped onto the ‘wrinkle softening
bandwagon’ and have made all types of promises that are
just not justified. A recent study* published in Dermatologic
Surgery pitted Botox, against a placebo saline injection, and
three different cosmetic products, that claimed
superiority to ‘act like botox’.
There were 77 women divided into groups of five
to participate in the study. An outside investigator
measured wrinkle improvements in the skin
using the Facial Wrinkle Scar scale, at weeks
4, 8 and 12 after the treatments. The independent
examiner noted the most improvement with the
patients treated with Botox. There was a minimal

2pm. The speaker will be Peter Brunton talking to us about food labelling which we hope will
answer some of our questions on this subject. Visitors welcome.

New classes ~ New Dance classes on Wednesdays, day-time and evening, for tots, children and
adults! Further details from Aisling on 07733 257 336.
Also new (monthly) Saturday Textile Workshops; contact 07796 594 951.
IT Skills Centre ~ We have some positive news on this front – it is anticipated that funding
will be forthcoming for the Skills Centre (to be known as CLIC – Computer Learning In the
Community), and we are hopeful that this Centre will be up and running by October 2010.
Any enquiries on CLIC, contact Hilary on 01829 770516.
Forthcoming Events:
Film @ Barbour ~ our new season has a foreign flavour; starting on Thurs 16th September,
8.00pm, with ‘Micmacs’ (12A). ‘Micmacs à Tire-Larigot’, (full French title) translates as “Lots
of Suspect Activities”, and is a comic fable about a gang of misfits that take on the weapons
industry and blows their ‘death machines’ sky high.
Proposed Tea Dance ~ Sun 19th Sept

BUNBURY WI
We had an inspiring & amusing evening in June when
Jane Shepherd told us about her very busy life in
television & radio, despite the fact that as a baby she had
contracted polio. Sonia McCann updated us about the
Vine Project in July, followed by Irene Cunliffe in August,
when both success & failure in amateur dramatics was
revealed.
One of our members has organised keep fit classes for
the over 55s which should now be well under way.
A Summer Lunch is planned for August and more outings
are being discussed following members’ enjoyable day at
Cholmondeley Castle.
