The Learning Plan


ENGAGE:

Bring a bag filled with a variety of books fiction and nonfiction about living and
nonliving things. For example, the very hungry caterpillar and a book about the life cycle
of a butterfly.

EXPLORE:
Students will be broken into three groups. 3 students/teacher
The students will pick books from the bag provided earlier for their teachers to read. As
they are reading, teachers will ask: what do you notice about the pictures? (Photographs
vs. illustrations), is it true or is it made up? Which ones teachs you new things and which
one is an entertainment? Is the rock living or nonliving? Do nonliving things really talk?
Is the caterpillar in the story living or nonliving? What did the caterpillar need to grow
and stay alive? What is the life cycle of the caterpillar? What is something else we
learned about that has a life cycle too? (plants)

Create a T-chart.
Ask the students what they noticed about the different books that they read? How are
they similar? How are they different?
I will then explain that fiction books are made up stories, that must be read in order, and
have illustrations. For nonfiction books, they include true facts, must be read in order,
and they have photographs.
My T-chart will have pictures made with boardmaker instead of words.

EXTEND:

To review the concept of sorting from the previous lesson, the students will look at a new
set of books and then sort them into two categories: fiction and nonfiction.

EVALUATE:

Make your own story: Are you going to make a fiction or nonfiction book? If you are
doing a fiction book, is the character in your story a living or nonliving? If you are doing
a nonfiction book, is it about a living or nonliving thing?

The writing sample from the extend section will be the evaluate piece to check if students
understood the concepts of fiction/nonfiction and living/nonliving
Title of the Lesson: lesson 4: is it fiction or nonfiction/ living and nonliving things

Material:

Variety of books that are fiction and nonfiction with focus on the following: nonfiction
books are about living and nonliving things. Fiction books have characters of nonliving
things being alive and animals talking.

Paper and writing tools (crayons, markers, pencils) to write the book.
