Grant Proposal for:

Promethean Activboard Training

By:

Takiela Langley
Abstract:

Hillside Elementary School has 150 teachers in grades K-8. It is seeking to integrate the

Promethean Activboard into classroom lessons by effectively training the teachers and staff to

use the Promethean Activboards that are provided in each room. The goals of the grant are to

train the thirty K-2 teachers to skillfully use and maintain the Promethean Activboards and use

them to create and present lessons. The proposed activities are tutorials, Q&A sessions, grade

level collaborations to create lessons, and lesson presentations. The expected outcomes of the

grant are that the K-2 teachers will maintain the Promethean Activboards and be motivated to

use them to create and implement lessons.

Proposal Text:

Demonstrated Need

Data was collected through emails, interviews, impromptu focus group meetings, and the

districts technology website. An email was sent to Hillside Elementary Schools Technology

Instructor. She said that the demand for technology support changed each quarter and by grade

level. A discussion with Hillsides principal and media specialist was held about the dominate

needs for technology professional development. Both individuals gave suggestions across the

grade levels. At this point, several grade level/focus groups were polled about their

opinions. The teachers were asked what technology item they most would like to receive

professional development on. The K-2 teachers all wanted to have more training on how to use

the Promethean Activboards to implement lessons and to be able to train students to use them in

class. The discussion centered around the fact that the boards were in the rooms, but little

training had been done on how to use them to the fullest extent. Please see Appendices C and D

for Data Charts.

Goals and Objectives

1. To train K-2 teachers on the use and maintenance of the Promethean Activboard

2. To build K-2 teachers skill levels and comfort levels using the Promethean Activboard

3. To have K-2 teachers collaboratively develop an interactive lesson plan using the

Promethean Activboard and to teach the lesson during the training class

The proposed activities are reflective of effective professional development because they

address the topic that teachers identified as a need. The activities are also presented in a way

that allow teachers to ask questions, get hands-on practice, collaborate with other teachers, and

apply what theyve learned.

Evaluation Plan:

Hillside Elementary School will implement the evaluation of the Promethean Activboard

training based on Kirkpatricks Four Level Evaluation Model. The goals and objectives will be

evaluated by Hillside Elementary and the districts Systems Technology Coordinator using both

formative and summative evaluation methods. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of

Promethean Activboard training, the Systems Technology Coordinator will administer pre-tests

to evaluate the participants knowledge and pre-surveys to evaluate the participants motivation

and reactions. At the end of the second training, post-tests and post-surveys will be

administered. The Systems Technology Coordinator will compile the results to determine the

participants changes in knowledge as well as attitudes about the training and use of Promethean
Activboards. During the Promethean Activboard training, the Systems Technology Coordinator

will evaluate and observe interactive lessons to determine if participants understand the

functions of the Promethean Activboard and to determine if they are able to apply the skills

which were taught. After the conclusion of the training sessions, ongoing evaluation will

continue at Hillside Elementary. Participants will continue to work collaboratively to create

interactive Promethean Activboard lessons, which they will detail in their lesson plans and

submit to the principal. Observations of these additional lessons will be conducted by the

principal and the school technology teacher and/or media specialist. The principal and the

school technology teacher and/or media specialist will use the lesson plans and observations to

evaluate the effectiveness of the Promethean Activboard training and to determine if the

participants were able to apply the skills and knowledge to their individual classrooms.

This plan for evaluation will focus on the following questions:

Do participants understand the functions of the Promethean Activboard and how to

maintain it?

Do participants feel more capable and adept at using the Promethean Activboard?

Can the participants collaborate to create interactive Promethean Activboard lessons?

Are participants continuing to work collaboratively to create and implement appropriate

interactive Promethean Activboard lessons?

Budget:

The Systems Technology Coordinator will conduct a 2-day training session during the countys
scheduled professional learning days, therefore, there will be no substitute teachers needed. On
the 1st training day teachers will meet at the district's computer lab to learn and receive basic
knowledge of the use and maintenance of the Promethean Activboard. Teachers will also have
the opportunity to practice using Promethean Activboards to build confidence and skill level. At
this training, teachers will be introduced to many resources (i.e. Promethean World) that will
give them extra support when needed. Teachers will also be given an owners manual to help
explain in further detail. After the 1st training session, teachers will be given an assignment to
create an interactive lesson before the 2nd training session using the Promethean Activboard.
They will work on this assignment with their grade level team. At the 2nd training session,
teachers will meet at the districts computer lab again on their scheduled professional learning
day to present their interactive lessons to all grade levels. At this training, teachers will be given
flash drives to put all interactive lessons onto, hand pointers to use with the Promethean
Activboards which make it easier for younger students to work with, and login credentials for
interactive learning games that the school district will provide to help students in grades K-2
with language arts and math. The total amount ($10,408.63) suggested will cover all expenses
for 30 teachers (10 in kindergarten, 10 in first grade, and 10 in second grade). Refer to appendix
E for an itemized budget and appendix F for a timeline of events.

To Whom It May Concern:

Hillside Elementary School is pleased to submit a proposal to McCarthey Dressman Education
Foundation requesting $10,409.00 to support a professional development for K-2 teachers in the
area of technology, specifically the Promethean Activboard.
Hillside Elementary School is located in Southern Coastal Georgia. The school provides learning
opportunities for 1564 students; with 85 percent of the students being Caucasian and the
remaining students are either African-American, Asian, Hispanic or Multi-racial. Twenty-eight
percent of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
With the large scale cuts in the states budget, Hillside Elementary School has received less and
less state funding every year. With less and less money coming in, drastic cuts had to be made at
the expense of teacher training. This seems especially true in regards to technology. The district
is great about giving the teachers new technologies, but they do not have the money to properly
train them on how to use these technologies to their fullest potential. Teachers are left to
figure it out and use the technology limitedly or not at all.
Funding would allow all the K-2 teachers to be trained to use the Promethean Activboard to the
fullest extent. The benefits of such materials and instruction are outlined in the proposal. Thank
you for your consideration of this proposal. Please contact Anna Palmer, Kindergarten teacher, to
answer questions or provide further information- phone: (912)395-6000 or
email: anna.palmer@hsespss.com. We look forward to working with you on this important
matter.
Sincerely,

Annie Palmer
Kindergarten Teacher
Appendix B: Proposal Request

Below is the web link to the application we filled out for the grant.
Teacher Development Grant Application
Appendix C: Data Chart

The chart above shows the service requests that were placed and taken care of for 3 years in the

Hillside Elementary School district. Out of these requests, Promethean Activboard issues

were requested an average of 72 times. The requests were higher in the beginning of the school

year, leveling off during the middle of the year and dropping off at the end of the year. A call

was made to the Help Desk. The Help Desk operator reported that there are currently 47 open

requests for Promethean Activboard issues.

Appendix D: Data Chart

The chart above shows the top 10 technology problems by category that have closed tickets for

the week of January 11, 2016. During that week, the Promethean Activboard was one of the top

10 problem issues. In fact, the Promethean Activboard ranked number 9. This would suggest

that with the amount of technical issues with the Promethean Activboard, that training is needed

for their use and complete instruction.
