mally where the first signs of ageing
appear. Often they can appear as
early as in our mid twenties. This is
mainly because there are less layers
of skin around the area so that the
skin is more sensitive, more delicate
and also more prone to the effects of
sun and environmental damage.

not only assist in protecting young skins from
future early ageing to the eye area, but will
also protect the eyes from forming cataracts
in later life.

A LOCAL charity for people with brain injuries is producing a calendar with images of
Eccleston and nearby villages.
The parish calendar will include photographs in the area from Heron Bridge through
Eccleston, Chester Business Park, Belgrave, Cuckoo’s Nest, Eaton Park, Poulton and
Pulford. Proceeds from the sale of the calendar would be for Eccleston Church Funds and
B.I.R.D. Charity, Centre for Brain Injury
Rehabilitation and Development located
in Eccleston.
Organisers are hoping for contributions
from local people. Photographs should
be submitted by early September to
B.I.R.D. and will be selected by Rev Ian
Thomas and Helen Schielke, Practice
Manager at B.I.R.D. and they would also
like to receive an imaginative suggestion
of a name for the calendar. Calendars
will be available for purchase from

months for planting so if you have a
border where plants are congested, get
to work in September.
Herbaceous perennials can be dug up, split
and replanted. New plants can be purchased
and planted. The soil will be warmer than
in spring so plants will get away well before
winter. It should be wetter in autumn so there
will be less watering of new planting.
Colour and interest in autumn can come from
old favourites such as Asters in pink and
mauve colours. If you want bright cheerful
flowers then try Helenium Butterpat for a tall
growing plant with yellow flowers which will
last for some time, especially if you dead
head regularly. Bees love the flowers. The
Passion flower (Passiflora) also flowers in late
summer and early autumn so if you can find it
a sunny, sheltered spot you will be rewarded
by the most beautiful exotic flowers scrambling
thorough shrubs or up a wall or fence.

feed with an autumn lawn feed then once that
has been done you should top dress using a
proprietary brand which is a mix of sand and
organic soil.
Winter lettuce and salads should be sown in
early September. Remember to stake sprout
and broccoli plants so they can survive the
winds of winter ready to give you sprouts and
tender broccoli in winter and spring.

Students take
a stomp
through
wonderland
Queen’s Park High School held
a celebration of the arts before
the summer break. The event
showcased the wide range of
talent at the school.
This included a performance
by Year 7 students of ‘A Stomp
through Wonderland’ which is a
fusion of the Alice in Wonderland story and music inspired by Stomp.
Each year Year 7students take part in a cross curricular project involving Art, Music and Drama.
‘A Stomp through Wonderland’ is the fifth of these projects. This year the project began with
students travelling to London to see the unique musical theatre performance known as ‘Stomp’.
This was followed by master classes in Art, Music and Drama that saw students design and make
headpieces and costumes, write scripts and compose music using everyday objects such as
tea cups and dust bins. Students and staff worked together in after school sessions as well as
weekends to complete the production.
‘A Stomp through Wonderland’ was performed for students from Overleigh St Marys CE Primary
School at a matinee performance and
for parents and guests at the schools
Arts Evening. Everyone who saw
it was impressed by the effort and
standard of work from the students.
