Journal name: Biological Trace Element Research

Date of article: June 2017

A study was conducted on 99 children who have communication disorder and autism spectrum
disorder. Their hair trace levels were measured for increased levels of lithium, selenium, arsenic,
beryllium, and cadmium as compared to the control levels. There has been research conducted
previously that has taken into account the role of hair as a mechanism for excretion of certain
elements. It could be proposed that children who have autism spectrum disorder have a more
profound alteration of metal handling and excretion as compared to children with communication
disorder. At the end of the study, the data showed that children with communication disorder had
elevated I, As, Be, and Cd levels as opposed to those with autism spectrum disorder. Those with
autism spectrum disorder also had significantly decreased Se levels as compared to those with
communication disorder.

Title: The Impact of Capturing Kids Hearts on New Teachers Perceptions of Classroom
Management
Author: Burgess, Stephanie L.
Date: 2017

A study was conducted to explore how implementing the classroom management model of
Capturing Kids Hearts (CKH), which is a teachers workshop, impacted first year teachers
perceptions of classroom management. It has been reported that first year teachers statistically
have large numbers of discipline referrals. CKH is a model that involves building community and
relationships within the classroom to help students take responsibility for their own actions.
During the workshop, teachers learn strategies to manage behavior. Data was collected by
teacher surveys prior to attending the CKH workshop for CKH, as well as after. The research
showed that first year teachers were not made confident with classroom management learned
in pre-service training. Data taken suggests that after CKH was presented, first year teachers
level of worry was decreased regarding classroom management.
