pushing out of Ogaden. Moreover, Muhammad Siad Barre expelled Soviet and got a support
by United States. In 1981 there was a conflict within Muhammad Siad Barre regime. In 1988

Unit 2 Project Guideline

Brief summary of the history of the social issue ( based on MDG selected) in your
country: (causes of the social issue in your country)
In 1936, Italian Somaliland combined with parts of Ethiopia and form a province of Italian
East Africa. In 1940-1941, Italy and British separate Somalia into two lands (British
Somaliland and Italian Somalia). During the time, there are many corruption occurs by Rome
and Italians politicians and businessmen also used the country for huge construction without
care about the local population. Moreover, it also destroy the minerals in soil.
They get their independence in 1960, merge and form the United Republic of Somalia. The
reason that make Somalia hard to develop is drought and war which began in 1969, when the
president in that time assumes power in coup. In 1974 - 1975, Somalia faces some severe
drought causes starvation. In 1977, they invades Ethiopia (aka the Ogaden War) which
occurs in the Ogaden region, the region is closest to Somalia but have some natural disasters
from droughts as it located in the Horn of Africa. After the war, Somalia lost some of their
population and money. In 1991, Somaliland breaks away from US a major famine has
overcome the collapse of Somalia state came more poverty and famine. In addition,
Somalia also get impact of the civil war because of the famine crisis.
To conclude, Somalia has a long story of history and war, moreover, their land has a lot of
natural disaster which make it hard for them to develop throughout the time.

Brief summary of how the social issue (based on the MDG selected) has affected your
country (post 1945): (effects of the social issue in your country current situation)
The situation of poverty and hunger in Somalia now is critical. People are dying of hunger
and there is no water, even in the rescue camps. About 6.2 million people, which is more than
half of the population, are in need of sustained food assistance and their lives are now at risk
of falling into a food security and nutrition crisis. The situation is even worse after the several
years of drought. There are approximately 738,600 people displaced by drought between
November 2016 and May 2017. Moreover, there are 3.2 million people in Somalia confronting
the severe crisis of food insecurity and a frequently high rates of malnutrition. Approximately,
one in every eight under-five children is malnourished.

When there are problems of poverty and hunger occurred in the country for a long period
of time, living conditions of the population gets worse. Somalia remains as one of the poorest
countries in Africa. Many people died, the one whos alive confronts many further problems:
infections and committing crimes to survive.

People in Somalia are living with HIV or AIDS and many types of diseases, such as
malaria, typhoid fever, dengue fever, bacterial diarrhea, hepatitis and much more. Moreover,
they even dont have enough money for their basic needs, so undoubtedly, theres no spares
for them for their health care,,, and further for their education.

Children that suppose to go to school, pick up guns instead of books, which emphasized
the extreme of poverty, hunger and instability of peoples lives. Since these children grew up
without any education, so instead of working for money, they rob. Extreme poverty is one of
the big reasons why they decide to commit crimes. One of the biggest crime that affect our

world is Somali Piracy. They often hijack cargo ship and take what they need such as money
or cargo if they have. They also held hostages and ransom. Some of Somali pirates got
arrested and some were facing death. Even though, they got arrested or die they still think
that its better to risk.

Brief summary of what your countrys government has done to deal with the social issue
(based on the MDG selected): (p
olicies in place and progress in dealing with the problem)
The American NGO with field offices in Somalia are helping together for making the country
leave the state of depression in crisis. The government decided to deal with the problems by
investing the food production on the ground in Africa. They spent about US$20,000 to invest
their agriculture. They tried to plant commercial crops like bananas and sugarcane for their
economics. They have improved the overall quality of life for people in Somalia by
successfully implementing infrastructure such as roads and schools. The reason why they
created the school is to increase their people knowledge and decrease problems with
poverty, because lack of knowledge can lead to many things, failure in doing agriculture and
producing food, unemployment, uncured sickness, famine and further leads to death.
Moreover, they tried to plant crops and plants that can resist to drought condition in their
country, like corn, sorghum, beans, rice, vegetables, cotton and sesame, as their food
instead, in order to survive in a food crisis during the drought period.
