Community group needs volunteers

A BIG question mark hangs over the community organisation, ch64inc due to a lack
of public support. Unless volunteers come forward at the Annual Meeting on 16th
September the charity may have to be wound up. A chairman is also required to
spearhead the group.

Burton Manor garden facelift

WORK to restore the walled garden and glasshouses in Burton Manor have begun.
The college obtained lottery funding for the work to create a new learning centre and
community area within the walled garden.
Keith Chandler, Principal of Burton Manor College, said: “It is the start of a very exciting
new chapter in the history of the Manor. It has been five years in the making to get to
this point and I am absolutely delighted that we have got here.”

It’s not only the cadets who get to have fun. Staff,
joined the air cadets from 2375 (Neston) Squadron
as the “race crew” for the 2010 Marathon Canoe
Championships that took place on the River Dee in
Chester. Competitors came from country wide, and
didn’t disappoint the spectators with some fantastic
paddling from ages as young as seven.
The ATC are always looking for new cadets, but they
also need staff and committee members. If you are
interested and think you have something to offer the
squadron, please call 336 2551 on either a Tues or
Thurs evening between 7.30pm and 9pm.

Big joy over meadow award
Big Meadow in Willaston has been
awarded Green Pennant status,
recognising ongoing work to preserve
rare grasslands at the site.
Managed by the Friends of Willaston
Meadow, with the help and support of
Cheshire West and Chester Council, Big
Meadow is classed as a Site of Biological
Importance.
Mostly ‘unimproved’ grassland, the
meadow has a diverse mix of native
grasses and wildflowers such as Pignut
and Yellow-rattle. Nationally 95 percent
of this kind of grassland has been lost, in
Cheshire this figure stands at closer to 98
percent.
Friends of Willaston Secretary David
Nind said: “We are delighted that Big
Meadow has received this award.
“Maintaining the site has been a real
community effort - with pupils from nearby
Willaston Primary School creating an area
of native woodland with annual plantings
of trees; the local WI groups helping to
establish an apple orchard, and local
Scouts and Guides who planting native
bulbs, trees and flower-plugs.“

environmental charities Keep Britain Tidy,
BTCV and GreenSpace.
Local Councillor Graham Smith said:

“I want to congratulate not only the
Friends of Willaston Meadow but all of the
voluntary organisations, members of the
public and young people who genuinely
care and have got involved to preserve
this beautiful green space.”
Big Meadow is a 1.85 hectare hedged
field of mostly semi-improved grassland,
of which only about 2 percent remains
in Cheshire. It is rich in grass species
and perennial wildflowers, with varieties
of old apple tree, several developed
in Cheshire, and also some pear and
damson trees.
To the west of the Meadow a small
copse of native trees has been planted
over several years by Willaston Primary
School pupils.

For many people a cash ISA is regarded as part of
their longer term financial planning however with
rates as they are now it is fair to ask if they are fit
for purpose and if an alternative strategy should
be considered.
Over £178 billion is tied up in cash ISAs according
to the Building Society Association* and interest rates
on the majority of accounts are particularly poor.
According to Moneyfacts July 2010, the top paying
instant cash ISA paid 2.75% and the best fixed rate
is 4.25% over 5 years with many accounts paying
a miserly 0.10%. The rate of inflation at time of
going to press is 3.2% meaning that your money will
be losing purchasing power if your interest rate does
not match this.
ISAs can be transferred to alternative providers
without losing the original tax benefits which means
where you have a number of tax year ISAs lumped
into one which is not proving a decent return the
whole amount can be moved if you so wish. In
addition, it means that you do not lose this year’s
allowance.
It is also possible to transfer cash ISAs to stocks and
shares ISAs. Where a cash ISA is regarded as long
term savings you could be well advised to consider
this route. Historically, over the longer term, invest-
ing in stocks and shares have proved more profitable
than deposits and have the added potential to make a
real return on your money above inflation. They can
also be used to provide a tax free income, which can
be used to supplement a pension and provide tax free
capital growth. However they do carry more risk to
your original capital and it is particularly important
that where you are considering switching a cash
ISA to a stocks and shares ISA you take appropriate
advice.
ISA funds can invest in anything from low risk
Government Bonds to high risk Emerging Market
funds together with anything available in between.
Where someone feels that they would like to consider
an alternative to cash ISAs but do have concerns
about fluctuations in the value of investments some
of the low risk funds may well be a good way to put
a toe in the water. These can provide the benefits of
a greater return without carrying all of the risks of
investment by spreading the risk between a number
of different funds and assets.
If you have accumulated a decent sum in cash ISAs
and want to look at alternatives a full review of the
options available could well be a profitable and good
use of your time.

NESS AND LITTLE NESTON WI

At our August meeting the speaker
David Casement gave a talk on his visit
to Newfoundland.
David showed us some very interesting
pictures of the scenery and especially
the fossils which were really spectacular.
David also went whale watching and he
saw whales galore. The vote of thanks
Wednesday was given by Maggie King.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 7th
9.30am, 5pm or 7pm September and the speaker will be Liz

THe current conflict in Afghanistan reminds us all
of the need for safeguarding the welfare, interests
and memory of those who are serving or who have
served in the Armed Forces.
The royal British Legion (rBL) fulfills these require-
ments by providing financial, social and emotional
support to service people, past and present, and their
dependants.
in addition to the fund-raising and Branch welfare
activities, there is a neston Legion Club. Membership
is available to all Branch members - and the good news
is that you don’t need to have served in the Armed
forces!
The Club’s aim is to be warm, welcoming and
comfortable and to offer members all the facilities for
socialising. in the Games room and Lounge there
are two large screen HD tvs showing sky sports.
A social evening of entertainment is provided every
saturday night in the Concert room, with guest artists
and the Club’s own resident Duo providing all dance
music. snooker players are well catered
for with three top class tables available.
Bingo evenings are held on tuesdays and
Thursdays in the Lounge.
The Club is open from 7.15pm – 12am
Monday to friday; 12pm – 12am satur-
day, and 12pm – 11.30pm sunday.

History of tHe venue

t He history of the British Legion began with its formation on sunday 15 May 1921 by the amalgamation
of four services associations. in 1971, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, the Queen granted the
Legion with the prefix “royal” in its title. it also entitled the Queen’s crown to be added to the badge.
Many branches were formed and of these the majority also had a “social” club attached. These provided the
community face of the branch membership.
neston has been well represented over the years and
its involvement with the association began when
many of the returning soldiers from the Great War
became members of Comrades of the Great War
movement. it was reported in 1919 that 841 officers
and men from neston had served in the war and 91
were killed.
neston Legion’s first meetings were held in a hut on
the field next to st Mary & st Helen Parish Church,
the field being known then as Comrades field. in
1946, with assistance from Lord Leverhulme, the The Congregational Chapel in 1909

Legion acquired the disused Congregational Chapel
and land next to what was then the institute, now the Civic Hall, in Chester road.
The building has undertaken significant changes, notably in 1975 when an additional storey for a concert
room was constructed. (As a result of the new level being built above the old church roof, part of the original
roof of the church has been retained and can be viewed from inside the building). in the 1990’s a lift shaft was
also added.
The local Branch provides welfare services to serving and ex-service personnel and their families. not just those
who fought in the two World Wars, but also those involved in the many conflicts since 1945 and those still
fighting today.

HOw TO JOIn THe nesTOn ROYAL bRITIsH LeGIOn
s In the earlier years, Legion membership was strictly limited
to serving or ex members of The Armed Forces. However,
Rules have now been relaxed and it is no longer a require-
ment to have served in the Armed Forces to become a member
The local membership number is about 500 and the Branch/Club is
always looking for new members and volunteers to get involved in fund-
raising and welfare work as well as helping with Club activities.
The annual Branch Membership fee is £11.10 and the Club fee is

£3.90, making the total fee for 2010/11 £15. The Membership year
runs from 1st october to 30th september.
Open Day
The neston Branch/Club is to hold an open Day during september to
enable those people interested in joining to see at first hand the facili-
ties available and what activities are taking place. This open Day is on
saturday 18th september from noon till 10pm. Just go along on the day
and you will be met by a member of the committee who will show you
around the premises, with no obligation.

Neston welcome for Great Tour cyclists
Seven weeks in to
their mammoth tour of
the British coastline an
intrepid band of cyclists
arrived in to Neston
on 14th August. The
cyclists are taking part
in The Great Tour Cycle
event taking in every
seaside port, village,
town, cove and bay
along every kilometre of
coastline accessible by
bicycle.
On their way in to Neston,
the Great Tour riders were
joined by local cyclists
including Cheshire West
and Chester Councillor
Kay Loch from Neston and
Parkgate ward, who cycled
the last few kilometres with
the riders in to Parkgate
along with members of
Birkenhead North End
Cycling Club.

Neston netballers aim to
get their name up in lights
The Neston Neons Netball Club has
received the boost it needs to enter the
realms of higher league netball – thanks
to two Cheshire West and Chester
Councillors.
Cllrs Kay Loch and Scott Mealor have
both donated part of their Members
Budget Grant to the team – combined to
total £3917.
The funding will help the team play in
higher leagues by assisting with the
hire of training courts, new kits and
bibs, equipment purchase, league entry
fees and ensure that they can employ a
trained coach.
It will also help the team to extend
membership to a wider age-range of
players, helping to encourage the young
and older people to partake in sport.
Cllr Loch said: “When the Neston Neon’s
first approached me for assistance in
not only helping the club to grow but to
actually keep it going I was struck by the
team’s determination and dedication.

Fiction: The Finkler Question- Howard Jacobson

A dinner between three long-time friends sets the bittersweet mood of this
book. The three friends are Julian Treslove, a professionally unspectacular BBC
producer and hapless romantic; his old school pal Sam Finkler a popular Jewish
philosopher; and Libor Sevick, an old Czech and their former teacher. Sam and
Libor have recently become widowers and Treslove’s unsuccessful record with
women gives him the honorary status of third widower. After dinner and a sweetly
painful evening of reminiscence, Treslove walks back to Regent Street. Lingering
outside the oldest violin dealer in the country, he is mugged by a woman,
who may, or may not, have called him a Jew in the process. From here on in
Treslove’s whole life comes into question. A warm, funny, human, melancholic
book. Longlisted for this year’s Booker Prize at the time of writing this review- I
wait with interest to see if it makes the shortlist.

Biography: Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother- Xinran

Chinese journalist, radio presenter and author of Good Women of China, Xinran
has brought together a collection of stories of Chinese mothers who have lost
their daughters, either through the notorious Chinese one-child policy or through
economic necessity. Some were given up for adoption, others abandoned on city
streets, outside hospitals and orphanages or on station platforms. Others even
had to see their baby daughters being taken away at birth and drowned. The
book is divided into ten chapters, each telling the story of a different woman,
and in some cases including the stories of the adoptive mothers. The book
sends a heartrending message from their birth mothers to all those Chinese
girls who have been adopted overseas (at the end of 2006 there were over
120,000 registered adoptive families for Chinese orphans, almost all girls, in
27 countries), to show them how things really were for their mothers, and to tell
them they were loved and will never be forgotten.
