Community group needs volunteers

A BIG question mark hangs over the community organisation, ch64inc due to a lack
of public support. Unless volunteers come forward at the Annual Meeting on 16th
September the charity may have to be wound up. A chairman is also required to
spearhead the group.

Book prize winner

Lorraine Davies, of Parkgate, was the winner of the recent competition we ran
to win a copy of Anthony Annakin Smith’s new book. Many thanks to everyone who
entered.

welcome. Contact Janet Griffiths 336 5478 or email janet.griffiths.ncs.googlemail.com

Burton Manor garden facelift

WORK to restore the walled garden and glasshouses in Burton Manor have begun.
The college obtained lottery funding for the work to create a new learning centre and
community area within the walled garden.
Keith Chandler, Principal of Burton Manor College, said: “It is the start of a very exciting
new chapter in the history of the Manor. It has been five years in the making to get to
this point and I am absolutely delighted that we have got here.”

Shady Style
Whatever the weather, more and more of us are choosing to opt for a more
‘Mediterranean’ style of living – with more time spent in the garden and a
growing fusion between outdoor and indoor living.
Blinds, awnings and shutters can really help to achieve this idyll – opening up your
home, allowing you to maximise the al fresco experience as well as protecting the
internal and external appearance of your home.
Local specialists, Apollo Blinds have a huge range of stunning awnings,
shutters and blinds, with designs to complement any interior look or design
style.
Mark McQuilliam and the team are at the leading-edge of contemporary
design and installation and were an obvious choice to help guide us through
the key choices for summers hottest home accessories…..

Awnings – Outside shelter, inside shade

Patios and terraces are almost always designed to sit in full sun. A place to gather with
family and friends, relax and unwind. Too much sun, however, can be both dangerous
and uncomfortable.
Adding an awning to your patio design helps both protect from the sun and offers
useful protection for any passing showers!
They help you create a totally useable space and maximise your outdoor usage –
whatever the wonderful British weather throws at us!
Hugely practical, a well fitted awning can also help protect the exterior of your
home from the elements whilst reducing glare to interior rooms.
Now available in a wide variety of designs, styles and materials, awnings can be
permanent or retractable, enhancing any grand design.

Plantation Shutters – Stylish and timeless

Supremely stylish and completely contemporary, plantation shutters are today’s iconic
design feature.
They feed our passion for clean, bright, modern interiors and are also incredibly versatile.
Shutters look magnificent in an elegant Georgian or Edwardian setting and can oodles
of additional charm to a traditional cottage style property. Modern homes can use
shutters to create a design style adding a romantic, cosy feel to even the blankest of
canvases.
Best of all, plantation shutters are far from unaffordable, with a wide variety of
styles, materials and finishes to chose from.

Conservatory Blinds
– Practical design in action
Once again, these clever little blinds offer much needed protection from the sun,
reduce glare and enhance design and interiors schemes.
Most of us use our conservatories as an extension to our gardens or as a TV, family
or dining room – all key living spaces which need to be ‘useable’.
Well fitted conservatory blinds can transform ‘green-house’ environments into practical,
comfortable spaces all year round.
‘Many of our blinds also offer protection against harmful UV rays,’ commented Mark. ‘They can also
help minimise sun damage to your furniture and accessories, prolonging its life keeping your conservatory looking
and feeling fresh.’

History of tHe venue

t He history of the British Legion began with its formation on sunday 15 May 1921 by the amalgamation
of four services associations. in 1971, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, the Queen granted the
Legion with the prefix “royal” in its title. it also entitled the Queen’s crown to be added to the badge.
Many branches were formed and of these the majority also had a “social” club attached. These provided the
community face of the branch membership.
neston has been well represented over the years and
its involvement with the association began when
many of the returning soldiers from the Great War
became members of Comrades of the Great War
movement. it was reported in 1919 that 841 officers
and men from neston had served in the war and 91
were killed.
neston Legion’s first meetings were held in a hut on
the field next to st Mary & st Helen Parish Church,
the field being known then as Comrades field. in

Legion acquired the disused Congregational Chapel
and land next to what was then the institute, now the Civic Hall, in Chester road.
The building has undertaken significant changes, notably in 1975 when an additional storey for a concert
room was constructed. (As a result of the new level being built above the old church roof, part of the original
roof of the church has been retained and can be viewed from inside the building). in the 1990’s a lift shaft was
also added.
The local Branch provides welfare services to serving and ex-service personnel and their families. not just those

fighting today.

BOOK REVIEWS:
SEPTEMBER MUST-READS
BY ELEANOR DAVIES, FROM LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

Fiction: The Finkler Question- Howard Jacobson

A dinner between three long-time friends sets the bittersweet mood of this
book. The three friends are Julian Treslove, a professionally unspectacular BBC
producer and hapless romantic; his old school pal Sam Finkler a popular Jewish
philosopher; and Libor Sevick, an old Czech and their former teacher. Sam and
Libor have recently become widowers and Treslove’s unsuccessful record with
women gives him the honorary status of third widower. After dinner and a sweetly
painful evening of reminiscence, Treslove walks back to Regent Street. Lingering
outside the oldest violin dealer in the country, he is mugged by a woman,
who may, or may not, have called him a Jew in the process. From here on in
Treslove’s whole life comes into question. A warm, funny, human, melancholic
book. Longlisted for this year’s Booker Prize at the time of writing this review- I
wait with interest to see if it makes the shortlist.

Biography: Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother- Xinran

Chinese journalist, radio presenter and author of Good Women of China, Xinran
has brought together a collection of stories of Chinese mothers who have lost
their daughters, either through the notorious Chinese one-child policy or through
economic necessity. Some were given up for adoption, others abandoned on city
streets, outside hospitals and orphanages or on station platforms. Others even
had to see their baby daughters being taken away at birth and drowned. The
book is divided into ten chapters, each telling the story of a different woman,
and in some cases including the stories of the adoptive mothers. The book
sends a heartrending message from their birth mothers to all those Chinese
girls who have been adopted overseas (at the end of 2006 there were over
120,000 registered adoptive families for Chinese orphans, almost all girls, in
27 countries), to show them how things really were for their mothers, and to tell
them they were loved and will never be forgotten.

Children’s fiction (0-4): The Troll- Julia Donaldson

(illustrations David Roberts)
From the author of The Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson, one of the most popular
children’s writers of all time, here is a super new book combining trolls and
pirates all inside one cover. Colourful, uncomplicated, with a salutary moral and
lots of laughs, a book any small child will enjoy!

And don’t forget Gareth Williams author of ‘Angel of Death’ will be talking
about and signing copies of his book at Linghams, Heswall on Wed Sept
8th at 6.30 pm. More details at http://heswall.linghams.co.uk
