Ukrainian Independence—August 24th
Ukraine’s history is marred
with political struggle, religious strife,
and economic hardship. Through
periods of warfare and hopeful attempts
to form a better economy, Ukraine
became a founding republic of the
Soviet Union in 1922. Ukraine became
an integral part of the Soviet
industrialization, which brought great
wealth to the government and devastated
the people. Stalin began to see that the
idea of a “bright communist future” was
starting to wither in the minds of the
people. The Ukrainian farmers suffered
starvation through Stalin’s plan to force
them into collectivization. When World
War II began, anti-Soviet and pro-Soviet
groups surfaced throughout Ukraine. At
the end of the war, Ukraine remained
under Soviet rule.

was suppressed, and many churches
were only able to keep their doors open
by being classified as “museums.” The
dark cloud of communism turned the
Ukrainians inward, considering
individual rights and freedoms less
important than the government.
Devastated by the broken
promise of equality, Ukraine sought
independence from the Soviet regime.
On August 24, 1991, Ukraine was
recognized as an independent nation,
which inaugurated a period of trial and
transition. Ukrainian independence is
celebrated with fireworks, a day off of
work, and parades. Despite the joy of
living in a free country, many
Ukrainians still do not have hope and
trust in the Lord, our Savior. Please
pray that the Ukrainian people will find
true freedom in Jesus Christ.
