Executive summary

The project, Cooling and Energy Efficiency of an induction motor, involves the investigation of the effect of
cooling on the efficiency of an induction motor. The cooling of the induction motor was done by means of
thermoelectric cooling modules (TECMs). The cooling was focused on the stator winding, due to the
influence of the temperature of the stator on the efficiency of an induction motor as well as the easy
access to the stator winding of this particular induction motor.

Various simulations were used to determine the most efficient design for the project. The simulations
included models designed in SolidWorks, a thermal analysis performed by means of FlowSimulation as

well as the basic induction motor tests performed in Matlab Simulink .

The complete assembled model was then tested by means of the no-load and the blocked rotor tests.
These tests were used to determine the efficiency of the induction motor for various temperature values of
the stator winding. From this the efficiency of the induction motor under normal and cooled operating
conditions was evaluated.
