4. a) A load of 2.5 kN is to be raised by screw jack with mean diameter of 75 mm and pitch 12 mm.
Find the efficiency of screw jack, if the coefficient of friction between the screw and nut is 0.075.
b) A body of weight 500N is pulled up an inclined plane, by a force of 350 N the inclination of plane
is 30 to the horizontal and the force is applied parallel to the plane. Determine the coefficient of the
friction.
OR
5 a) A 400 gram package lying on a horizontal surface is attached to a horizontal string which passes
over a smooth pulley. When a mass of 200 grams is attached to the other end of the string, the package is
on the point of moving. Find the coefficient of friction.

b) Block A of weight 520N rest on the horizontal top of block B having weight 700N as shown in
figure. Block A is tied to a support C by a cable at 300 to the horizontal. Coefficient of friction is 0.4 for
all contact surfaces. Determine the minimum value of the horizontal force P just to move the block B.
Find also the tension in the cable.

6. Find the centroid of the composite area shown in the following fig.

OR
7 a) calculate the mass moment of inertia of circular plate of radius R and thickness t about its centroidal
axis

b) Calculate the moment of inertia of a homogeneous sphere of radius r with respect to its diameter.

8 a) A bar AB remains in contact with the circle of radius 50mm shown in Fig.9. If the end A moves with
constant velocity of 2m/s along the horizontal line, determine the angular speed of the bar.

b) The plane curvilinear motion of a particle is defined by the equations x = V ot and y = K cos (2
Vot/l). Find the equation of the path y = f(x). Find the maximum normal acceleration of the particle if V o
= 12m/s, K=1m and l = 8m.
OR
9 a) Two identical blocks A and B are connected by a rod and rest against vertical and horizontal planes,
as shown in Fig. 7. If the sliding impends when =45 0, determine the coefficient of friction, assuming it
to be the same at both floor and wall.
b) A flat car can roll without resistance along a horizontal track as shown in Fig. 8. Initially, the car
together with a man of weight w is moving to the right with speed v. What increment in velocity will
the car obtain if the man runs with speed u relative to the floor of the car and jumps off at the left?

***
10 a) A particle of mass m is thrown vertically downwards with initial velocity u and resistance of the
atmosphere R = KV2 per unit mass, where K is a constant and V is the velocity at any time
instant t. Determine the distance travelled by the particle at the time instant t.
b) Two masses m1 and m2 are interconnected with a pulley system as shown in Fig.13.Determine the
acceleration of the mass m2 if m1 = 50 kg and m2 =40kg.

OR
11. A block of weight W1 = 200 N rests on a horizontal surface and supports on top of it another block of
weight W2 =50 N. The block W2 is attached to the vertical wall by a string AB as shown in Fig. 12. Find
the amount of horizontal force P, required to be applied to the block W 1 for impending slipping. Assume
