Unit Plan: Adaptation

The following unit spans nine or ten classes. It is based around the concept of adaptation, and
addresses an array of its different aspects and denotations, namely, media studies, acculturation,
and adaptation to climate change. It culminates in a final project, which is an elaboration of one
of three class activities, as well as a unit test in in the form of an in-class essay.

Unit Notes

All free writes should be collected and collated by the teacher. They will be handed back to the
students when the unit test is introduced (on day 6), to be annotated and highlighted by the
student. They will be collected one more time and handed out with the unit test to act as notes for
the test. Details in lesson 4.

The unit test will consist of three essay questions. Students should be prepared to combine
knowledge and concepts from all four lessons into expository or argumentative essay format.
Students should be told ahead of each main activity that they will be given more time to work on
them later. They should also be told, at the end of lesson 4, that they will be using one of these
activities as their final project. This is to prevent apathy toward the remaining 2 activities, in
light of the fact that they will not be marked.

Unit Test Questions

Answer one of the following questions in essay format. It does not have to follow the classic
intro-3 body paragraphs-closure design, but it should have a thesis and supporting arguments.
This is a chance for you to show what you have learned! Try to incorporate as much as you can
from all our lessons, as well as your research, about adaptation. Make analogies and metaphors
to help make connections between ideas.

1. What do we gain when we adapt? What do we lose?

2. Is it our responsibility to adapt (art, ourselves, our environment, etc.)? Is it always
necessary?
3. Is the original always better? Why do you think people believe this?
