Ideas:

Your character, by using the ideas and/or quotations that this philosopher actually said
or wrote, is responsible for reflecting how their choice of travel destination in Den Haag
(The Hague) shows an understanding of the Essential Understandings of Unit 1:
1. Medieval European society was shaped by Christianity, disease, warfare, and
feudalism.
2. There were different factors that drove the changes in values in Europe from the
medieval period to the Renaissance, Scientific Revolution, Reformation, and
Enlightenment.
3. Ideas developed during the Renaissance, Scientific Revolution, Reformation, and
Enlightenment led to the political, economic, and cultural changes, including the major
revolutions and the rise of the New World exploration and exploitations.

How did the contributions of the Dutch Golden Age represent the ideals of the Enlightenment?
Ans. The Dutch Golden Age was when Dutchs trade, science, military and art were the best of
all time. Dutch used to use ship as their vehicle to go around the world. They traded and
exchanged their products to other country in order to contribute the culture and to learnt more
about others cultures. As a result, they found out that many other countries didnt have the
same way of thought like them such as religion Christian Protestant or Calvinist.

How would a trip to The Hague help reinforce an understanding of these ideas?
Ans. Because Hague was the seat of the Dutch parliament, and 16th-century Noordeinde
Palace is the kings workplace. Hence, we would think it was a good place to get to understand
and collect the ideas from a lot of the philosopher in the Enlightenment.

THE SITUATION Your scenario starts in front of the statue of William of Orange or William III
in Plein (Square), who led the Glorious Revolution and began the House of Orange and was
monarch of both the Netherlands and England. The story can begin with the characters
contemplating the Dutch role in Englands Glorious Revolution and what to do next The role-
play should be about 20 minutes long, and no more than three minutes, with each student given
an equal amount of speaking time / about three minutes each. The Historic Role-play Rubric
will be used in grading; note that the Knowledge of history/philosophy is most important.

THE MISSION Decide as a group where to go, mindful of MUIDS ESLOs regarding teamwork
and leadership, by negotiating with your philosophical friends to plan where to go next, and start
traveling if theres time. Make sure that you are as true to your philosophical and travel
preferences as much as you can, and negotiate when you can in the spirit of friendship. Just
dont sell your soul. Luther wouldnt like that. Try not to be late for lunch!
THE REFLECTION After your trip to Holland, wraps up, please reflect, philosophically, by
answering questions such as: How do you feel about what you saw? What did you learn on your
trip? How through the conversations with other philosophers did you gain a deeper sense of the
Essential Understandings of Unit 1, namely how was Medieval European society was shaped by
Christianity, disease, warfare, and feudalism and how out of this emerged the Renaissance,
Scientific Revolution, Reformation, and Enlightenment and colonialism?

The world is my country; science is my religion. Christian Huygens

King james - It was such a long time until the dinner at See You at Noon. I would like to go to
somewhere to travel and get to know more about The Hague. Did you have any ideas?

Immanuel Kant I suggest visiting the Mauritshuis. It was a museum full of the best paintings
from the Dutch Golden Age, which including an iconic image of naval hero Michiel de Ruyter.
Trust me, it such a waste if we have arrived The Hague but did not see the Dutch Mona Lisa.

Da Vinci- I am totally agree with Kant. You dont know how much meaning have been hidden in
each picture. I would go to see the second or Dutch Mona Lisa by my own eyes, as Kant have
stated. I want to see if it is as beautiful as people had mentioned. In fact, to see if it is as
beautiful as mine. Me personally was the person who spent almost of my 16 years in life to
really complete my sketch. Hence i really want to see it. Kant words have already pushed me
into it.

Niccolo Machiavelli I Would like to suggest Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) nearby Delft. It was
where William the Silent, of the Netherlands father of the fatherland, leader of the revolt
against Spanish rule in Holland and leader of the Glorious Revolution. But have been shot and
killed by an assassin working for the Spanish King Philip II of Spain. That was the background
information I am interested in. Anyway, this destination is not on the map of the city center of
The Hague. But I still suggest to go there.

Martin Luther Talking about Church, why dont we go to Grote Kerk (Great Church). It was an
appreciating the effects of the Protestant Revolution he helped spark and appreciating the
spiritual atmosphere. I guarantee that all people here would enjoy.
Mary Wollstonecraft I would love to visit the Vredespaleis (Peace Palace), the ideal
manifestation of humanitys Rationalist desire for fairness and rule of law and respect for
womens rights and equality in this monument to peace and justice. Moreover, taking selfies
there was amazing. Many views and now was a right time to take a bright one.

Thomas Hobbes No, no no. Church was way too familiar, there's church everywhere. Peace
was too boring. I suggest we should tour the Museum de Gevangenpoort (Prison Museum).
Remember my ideas, the Life in the state of nature is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short? I
wanted all to investigate the medieval torture equipment used in a darker time before The
Hague became known as the City of Peace and Justice.

John Locke Aha, talking about tortue hand fighting, I just remember about the Knights Hall. I
am very excited about seeing the Dutch Parliament in action, on a ProDemos tour of the
Binnenhof/Rizzedal (Knights Hall) complex. Since, after all, all of my ideas greatly inspired the
European democratic tradition.

King: People, I dont think we had enough time to travel to all the seven places. I am very
appreciate all of your opinion but I scare that we could only go to 3 places in maximum.

Immanuel Kant Your highness, Art does not want the representation of a beautiful thing, but
the representation of something beautiful, look closely. The beautiful may be small. Moreover, I
wanted you guys to see the sight of this museum. It surrounded three face by a lake and also
with the bright color house tone which made it look so special. I would love you all to see.

Da Vinci- I am totally agree sir. And i suggest you all to go and see them. You guys will like
them as me and Kant like them.

Niccolo Machiavelli I have been said what I needed to say.

Martin Luther Hey, appreciating the spiritual atmosphere was also very essential and
interested to do.

Mary Wollstonecraft -womens rights and equality in this monument to peace and justice. It is
justice, not charity, that is wanting in the world.

John Locke - Men being, as has been said, by nature, all free, equal and independent, no one
can be put out of this estate, and subjected to the political power of another, without his own
consent, since, after all, all of my ideas greatly inspired the European democratic tradition.

Thomas Hobbes no matter what you said, I am still state with my idea.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau Hey, calm down clam down. I wanted to see my friends happy. I
dont understand why we ended up like this. We should be made a decision as soon as possible
or else, we are running out of time. Liberty is like rich food and strong wine: the strong natures
accustomed to them thrive and grow even stronger on them; but they deplete, inebriate and
destroy the weak, Happiness: a good bank account, a good cook, and a good digestion. I
want to get to See You at Noon on time since i have heard about some interesting and delicious
dishes.

King - I have heard all of your opinions. Why dont we summary them all, divide into categories
and then choose the best three. In my opinion, for art, lets go to the Mauritshuis since, me,
myself, also very interested in the art there. Next, I am interesting when hearing the named
Grote Kerk, which mean the Great Church, since they all churches, I hope you would agree to
go. Last but not least, the world is now peace, and we should respect women, I would like to go
to Peace Palace. Moreover, we could take a group picture there. That was my opinion, I hope
you all will respect that.

All - As if you said, your highness.
