Introduction

Background of the study

Fraternities and sororities are widely known in college. It

is organizations that involve initiation to the members.

Fraternities were founded on dedication to principles such as

community service, academic achievement, and leadership

qualities. Most fraternities and sororities today maintain

traditions, which are generally symbolic in nature and kept as

closely guarded secrets. Some chapters are closed, and many had

trouble filling their available spaces. Fraternities grew

rapidly because many of the students are curious about this kind

of organization. Some fraternities and sororities are honored by

the society because of their great help to them. They maintain

peace in societies and help them clean the surroundings, while

other fraternities and sororities are experiencing

discrimination because of their bad attitudes and habits towards

other people.

Fraternity and sorority life is not really good. There are

Review of Related Literature

Fraternities and Sororities are organization that brings

together men and women, respectively for social, honor, service

or recognition purposes, social fraternities and sororities,

usually known by their Greek Letters, are commonly found on

American college campuses and may be national with branches at

many colleges, or no one campus. Phi BETA KAPPA [1779] is the

first honor society, or fraternity.

Most social fraternities began in semi secrecy, possibly in

imitation of FREEMASONRY, and bore the initials of Greek

letters. Kappa Alpha at union college was the first fraternity

[1825], adelphean at Wesleyan College, was the first Sorority

[1851]. Fraternities grew rapidly after 1840. Divisiveness and

controversy existed from the beginning and animosity resulted

from fraternities and sororities choosing only the more socially

favored as members and then encouraging a conformist style of

thought and behavior. In time the fraternities influence on

students rivaled the facultys sensing this, many colleges in

the 1890s tried unsuccessfully to abolish them, by 1898 a large

minority of male American college students were fraternity

members. Fraternities and Sororities had developed into

established national organizations, run by their alumni, and

ages 20 years old were 8 (36%); ages 21 years old were 6 (27%);

and ages 22 years old were 5 (23%).
