THE HOCKEY PROSPECTOR

2017 NHL DRAFT GUIDE

TOP 100 PROSPECTS
PREFACE

Welcome to my first ever Draft Guide!!

I wanted to include this preface as it is important to note that these are my Top-100
prospects for this years draft as I see them. I expect that many will read this and figure
that this is hogwash because it doesnt exactly agree with the consensus. I can only say
that I call em, like I see em and Im not going to rate a player higher because its the
popular opinion. Some players, I just dont like their game for a variety of reasonsthey
may still very well end up very good players in the NHL.
The Top-3
Obviously, people are going to disagree with me on my #1 ranked prospect: Miro
Heiskanen. I am a huge Nico Hischier fan and he and Heiskanen were pretty much tied
for that top spot. For me, the difference is that I believe that Heiskanen has franchise
defenceman potential and for that reason, hes my #1. He is the best draft-eligible
defenceman prospect that I have seen since Seth Jones in 2013. I feel both Hischier and
Patrick both have the potential to be #1 centers or #2 centers when its all said and done.
I think both will end up very good players but neither of them franchise players.
This Draft
I think this draft gets a bit of a bad rap and I think its because its sandwiched between
two excellent, top-heavy drafts. The Auston Matthews/Patrik Laine 2016 draft from last
year and the upcoming, incredible 2018 draft that will see just an overwhelming amount
of top-end players make this draft seem a bit meh. But I still think its a good draft class
with many underrated players to be had.
My Favourites / Underrated / Darkhorse
Those familiar with my draft rankings will see players highlighted in blue as that
denotes that player as one of my favourites. Its either because I love their game and
their potential, find them underrated or that I think they are a bit of a darkhorse to
make the NHL but have a better chance than most think. Sometimes its all three.
All in all, this draft guide took a very long time to complete and is just one mans
opinion. I hope you enjoy it.
-Cheers!

#1. Miro Heiskanen, LD HIFK, SM-liiga
60 172lbs
Comparable : Duncan Keith
Upside : Franchise D-Man
Floor : #3 Two-Way D-Man

The last time I compared a d-man to a player like Duncan Keith, it was 2012 and that
player was Morgan Rielly. I think that worked out pretty well for the Leafs. Most people
had Rielly ranked between #6-8 on their list but I had seen enough from him the year
prior at the Under 18s to rank him at #2. I see Miro Heiskanen having that very same
potential and probably more.
Hes an incredibly smooth, fluid and strong skater with excellent offensive and defensive
awareness. This player thinks the game at a high level. He closes gaps fast due to his
elite skating and skates pucks out of the defensive zone effortlessly. Makes crisp, tape-
to-tape passes to his teammates with incredibly high accuracy...an excellent puck
distributor. To be perfectly blunt, I have not seen a d-man prospect that flags to be this
good since Seth Jones in 2013. For me, what's most impressive is that Heiskanen always
seems poised, always seems calm and makes the safe play and correct decision 99% of
the time.
I think Heiskanen's potential ranges between Franchise D-man and no lower than a
really solid, two-way #3. I've heard comments that some don't believe his offensive
game is good enough for him to be considered a true #1 d-man...I disagree. I think
Heiskanen can be a 15G 40A type of player and perhaps even more than that. When you
can skate, move the puck and understand the game the way he does, the offense will
come with it. This is a kid who is going to be drafted as a 17 year-old and won't turn 18
until July and for him to have played so well in the SM-liiga as a 17 yr-old, Top-4 D-man
is practically unheard of. In the end, I evaluated Heiskanen to be pretty much tied with
Hischier as I think Nico has a very strong chance at becoming a #1 center and at worse a
#2 center but the reason why I have Heiskanen as my top prospect is because I believe
he has the upside to potentially become a Franchise defenceman.

#2. Nico Hischier, C Halifax, QMJHL
61.5 179lbs
Comparable : Henrik Zetterberg
Upside : 1st Line Two-Way Center
Floor : 2nd Line Two-Way Center

The comparable that I heard for Nico Hischier is Henrik Zetterberg and I think it's a
really good one. Hischier has everything you'd want in a hockey player: he's highly
skilled, has great vision and imagination, is a great skater, he's tenacious, he's
defensively responsible. He definitely has some 'Datsyuk' to his game (his favourite
player growing up) and you can see that he makes that second effort to strip opposing
players of the puck...he's quite good at that as well.
While Hischier might not have what some would consider ideal size for a Top Center,
hes going to fill-out and probably play at close to 195-200lbs, so for me there is no
concern there.
I actually believe that Hischier doesn't get the credit that he deserves after being ranked
as a late first round pick back in September and really coming into his own this season.
The performance he gave at the WJC was completely mind-blowing...well at least for
me. For a draft eligible player, in what is widely considered a 19 year old's tournament,
to put a team on his back like he did and get that Swiss team to as close as they got, was
simply incredible. For me, that puts him ahead of Nolan Patrick in this year's draft.
I don't really think you can go wrong selecting Hischier...he's a great team player, a hard
worker, leads by example, is captain material. What's not to like? I see Hischier's floor
as a #2 two-way center but if I had to guess with this player's compete, he won't be
satisfied with that and will keep working until he's the best player on the team.

#3. Nolan Patrick, C Brandon, WHL
62 199lbs
Comparable : Ryan Johansen
Upside : 1st Line Offensive Center
Floor : 2nd Line Offensive Center

Just because I'm ranking Nolan Patrick 3rd overall, it doesn't mean I think he's not
going to turn into a really good NHL player. It's just that I like the other two guys ahead
of him a little more.
When I compare Nolan Patrick to the rest of the top guys in this class, he should be well
ahead having missed the draft cut-off date by only 3 days and having had a full year of
experience more than the others. Unfortunately, it's been an injury-plagued season for
him and recovering from a sports hernia is never an easy thing and it can take a while
for him to get completely healthy and feeling great.
Watching Nolan Patrick play, I can see the top-end skill and I think he's certainly going
to be a pretty good player but I just don't see him taking over anything. Admittedly, I
have had issues with this in the past, evaluating guys like Ryan Johansen and Alexander
Barkov and while I'm not still a huge fan of those players, I probably ranked those guys
too low because I felt they didnt control enough of the play. In my mind, a top player
that's going to be a star has to have the ability to take over games and I just don't see
that quality with Patrick. I've heard Sean Monahan as a comparable for him and that
sounds about right but Monahan is another player that I have some issues with because
he puts up points but doesn't really control anything.
That's my biggest issue but with that in mind, I firmly believe that Nolan Patrick has a
good combination of size and top-end skill to be a very good player in the NHL. My
comparable for him is Ryan Johansen as I see Nolan Patrick in that mold and that's
certainly not bad at all.

#4. Jusso Valimaki, LD Tri-City, WHL
61.5 211lbs
Comparable : Roman Josi
Upside : Top Pairing Two-Way D-Man
Floor : #4 Two-Way D-Man

Watching Jusso Valimaki play, it's hard not to be impressed. A d-man with ideal size
that can play on both sides of the ice and control the puck the way he does is certainly
impressive.
Valimaki is a very good puck mover and can find teammates in seams that appear to be
closed with short or long, accurate passes. He can put pucks into areas where his
teammates are going to be a second later thanks to fantastic anticipation. He has the
ability to stickhandle himself out of trouble though that can sometimes get him into
more trouble. This is a player that will take chances offensively. He is very creative and
has a very high hockey IQ. While points never tell the whole story, he put up over a
point per game in the WHL and that is a feat in itself.
After having watched him play a more conservative game for Team Finland, I was very
impressed seeing him take on a much more offensive-minded game with Tri-City...this
is just an incredibly talented player! I think the reason he isn't ranked as a top-10 pick is
probably because of perceived issues with his skating. Valimaki has good top end speed
but I believe he must work on his first few steps and improve his
explosiveness/acceleration. This shouldn't be a major concern as I believe this is
something that he can improve. This is a player who is defensively responsible. He has a
good stick and will take the body and the opposition out of the equation.
My comparable for him is Roman Josi as I think Valimaki plays a similar solid two-way
game and Josi was also a guy who was underrated his draft year. Josi is a player who
logs a ton of minutes, takes care of his own end and moves the puck extremely well and I
think Valimaki is similar in that regard. Valimaki's overall upside is probably a #2 two-
way D-man but his floor is very high as I don't see him ending up any worse than a Top-
4 guy.

#5. Kristian Vesalainen, LW HPK, SM-liiga
63 209lbs
Comparable : Max Pacioretty
Upside : Top-Line Two-Way Winger
Floor : 2nd Line Two-Way Winger

I liked what I saw from Kristian Vesalainen last year as an underage player at the U18
tournament but I certainly wasn't convinced then that he was going to be a first round
pick. However, he has made tremendous strides and improved quite a bit since that
time. He was always a very strong skater but to me the major difference is that he seems
to want the puck on his stick and keeps possession more than he used to and also drives
the net more which is what you want to see with this type of player.
I think this is a player who compares well to a guy like Max Pacioretty and that's really
who he reminds me of out there on the ice even though I'm not convinced he's going to
be as good of a goalscorer as MaxPac but in terms of Top-6 forward/offensive impact, I
think that this comparable is right on.
Vesalainen has a great combination of size, skating ability and compete. He's probably
one or two years away from an NHL debut. I can't imagine this guy as anything worse
than a 2nd line LW with the possibility to be a lot more than that but he's the kind of
player that can play anywhere in your lineup.
He's a very safe pick and I think he's going to be a real good player and that's why I have
him ranked so highly.

When I first saw Conor Timmins play, I was left in a state of dj-vu, scratching my
head. I was puzzled because I dont get how a d-man who skates, handles and distributes
the puck the way Conor Timmins does, is only ranked as a late 1st round pick by the
concensus?
It's deja-vu because "I've seen this movie before" back in 2010 with Justin Faulk. In the
exact same manner that I couldnt grasp why most had Faulk only ranked only as a 2nd
round pick or worse [I ranked Justin Faulk 20th overall in 2010] I see the same thing
going on here with Conor Timmins. Great skater, good anticipation, good size, right-
handed shot, good stick, takes the body, plays a lot of minutes.
To me, this guy flags as a potential top pairing d-man. My comparable for him is that
very same Justin Faulk as that's who he reminds me of most in the way that he plays.
With the draft, there is always a ton of uncertainty but not for me and not with this guy.
Expect this kid to be a player.

In my opinion, one of the most underrated players in this year's draft and one of my
favourites that I've liked for a really long time. The player I nicknamed "The Finnish
Tarasenko", Eeli Tolvanen is going to make some people regret having passed him over
in this years draft.
If you like the way Vladimir Tarasenko plays for the Blues, you'll be happy with Eeli
Tolvanen. He's not a big player but he's stocky and doesn't shy away from the physical
stuff although that's really not his game. This player is an offensive force and a true
sniper. He fires laser beams out there and just knows how to score goals. That's not the
only dimension to his game but it's certainly the most dangerous aspect and one that
teams need to lookout for.
Tolvanen is an excellent skater and solid playmaker as well. I think he's flying under the
radar a bit having played in the USHL but he stood-out at the WJC and to me that's
certainly impressive as it is a 19 year olds' tournament. All in all, I think Tolvanen is
going to be at worse a 2nd line LW sniper and he's got the potential to be a top line
player.

Another one of my favourites from this year's draft, I absolutely love this player. He is
really underrated and I'm not exactly sure why. In all of the viewings that I've had, he's
just looked like an incredibly smart, defensively responsible, dangerous offensive center
who can see the ice extremely well.
I guess this is how guys like David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron become second round
picks? I can't speak for others and what they see but I am convinced beyond a shadow of
a doubt that Robert Thomas is going to be a very, very good NHL player. He's got really
good compete, is a strong skater, excellent playmaker, has a good, hard and deceptive
shot but what stands out most for me, is his offensive awareness and defensive
awareness are both really, really high.
My comparable for him is David Krejci and I find they have a similar style and they are
about the same size.
My expectations are that Robert Thomas ends up a really good 2nd line center in the
NHL and that's the reason why I have him ranked so highly.

#9. Elias Pettersson, C Timra, Allsvenskan (Swe-1)
62 165lbs
Comparable : Alex Wennberg
Upside : Top-6 Offensive Forward
Floor : Top-9 Offensive Forward

The most surprising thing I noticed while watching Elias Pettersson play is how much of
a tireless worker he is out there. He gives 'even' performances every shift throughout the
game, at least the ones I saw. His work ethic is phenomenal and it doesn't hurt that he's
got a pretty great skillset to go with that as well.
Great anticipation, creativity and a high hockey IQ are qualities that best describe him
although I found he sometimes seems to fly under the radar a bit and then comes out of
nowhere and makes a great play. This is not a player with a tremendous 'presence' on
the ice but he's a slick and clever player who works hard in all areas and gives a
noticeable strong second effort. He is listed at 6'2" and 165lbs and he's probably going to
need to eventually fill-out a bit and get to a playing weight close to 185-190 lbs to truely
be effective.
My comparable for him is Alex Wennberg and I think that is an appropriate comparable.
Wennberg is a player that I thought was overrated back in the 2013 draft and he has
proven me wrong. Maybe it was just the games that I saw but I didn't see what made
him so special. I didn't really see any star potential and my expectations were probably a
little too high to begin with. I think the same holds true with a player like Pettersson. To
me, he doesn't flag as a guy with 'star potential' but he could turn out to be a really solid
Top-6 forward.
If he puts on weight and gains confidence, he could be much more than that. When you
consider the compete + the skillset + the potential, I think he's a lock to be a Top 10
pick.

#10. Gabriel Vilardi, C/RW Windsor, OHL
63 203lbs
Comparable : Adam Deadmarsh
Upside : 2nd Line RW Power Forward
Floor : 3rd Line RW Power Forward

It's difficult to watch Gabriel Vilardi play and not like what you see. He's such a hard-
worker, so tenacious and really gives it his all on every shift. I was watching a game
against London when he was working in the corner and he had two players draped all
over him and he just kept going, protecting the puck and powering through. That's the
type of player you're getting with Gabriel Vilardi.
I do think that the Top-5 ranking he's had most of the year has been pretty generous
though. I'm not seeing the top-end skill necessary for him to be a Top-5 pick but I think
as a winger, he could be a Top-6 Power Forward and a really good one at that. For some
reason, I think he will eventually transition to wing like a lot of drafted centers do.
Vilardi is one of the youngest players in the draft (will turn 18 in August) and a real
likeable kid too.
For his comparable, I'm going old-school and comparing him to one of my favourites of
all time, Adam Deadmarsh. There are a lot of things that Vilardi does on the ice that
reminds me a lot of Deadmarsh. The way he skates, the way he takes the body and rubs
people out and his general excellent work ethic are things that I find are quite similar. I
remember reading the scouting report on Adam Deadmarsh prior to the 1993 draft and
he was described as 'a lunch-pail' type of player in the sense that he's always ready to get
to work...I think this also rings true for Vilardi.
There are knocks on his skating and while he'll probably never be a great skater, he's
done a good job to improve over the course of the season. So depending on how the draft
unfolds, I can see a team like Las Vegas picking up a kid like Vilardi as a solid building
block to their team since his 'floor' is pretty high, he has good upside and he's really a
low-risk pick because I think the chances that he becomes a solid NHLer are excellent.

#11. Casey Mittelstadt, C Green Bay, USHL
60 199lbs
Comparable : Derick Brassard
Upside : Top-6 Offensive Forward
Floor : Top-9 Offensive Forward

I find that Casey Mittelstadt is a player that is more difficult to get a good read on
because he flip-flopped between stiffer competition in the USHL and much weaker
competition in High-School. Against high-schoolers, he dominated but that is no
surprise, he should dominate. Which top-10 ranked player wouldn't have destroyed
high-school hockey if they had been in his skates??
Middlestadt has a very good shot, he gets into the right areas of the ice to score and has
a nose for the net. He's an accomplished playmaker as well though I found him to be
more of a north/south, shoot-first type of player rather than an extremely creative
East/West guy.
I found this player particularly difficult to evaluate because a lot of the viewings I had,
he was playing left wing and I think that he's probably more comfortable playing center.
In any case, I've seen a lot of people rave about Mittelstadt and have him ranked
extremely high but for me, I don't quite see that same upside that others seem to. I've
seen him at different levels playing against weaker competition and at the U18
tournament last year where he was on a stacked team, playing with excellent players and
he just never 'wowed' me. I see the skillset but I just don't see the creativity to be a top
line player in the NHL.
I believe there is a strong chance he will be selected within the top 10 and he has a very
good chance at becoming a solid Top-6 forward but it's not guaranteed. My comparable
for him is Derick Brassard because I see him as that type of player who had a ton of
expectations but took some time to put it all together.
I see Mittelstadt developing like that but I'm not certain he gets to Brassard's level.

Upside : #3 Offensive D-Man

It's much harder to gauge a guy like Makar because he played in a league that is a few
tiers down from what I would consider 'standard' competition in the CHL or otherwise.
He also didn't end up playing in any international tournaments which doesn't really help
in getting an accurate read on him.
He had an impressive season with a lofty 75 points in 54 games played but how much
worse would other top ranked offensive d-man have done, if they were playing that
level? I'm not too sure. Nevertheless, Makar is a great skater with unreal acceleration
and excellent puck control. He has a hard and accurate shot and good playmaking
abilities to set up teammates and is a true Power-Play Quarterback.
I'm certain that will be very appealing to a lot of teams and he'll probably go in the top-
10. Makar is a late-birthday and will turn 19 in October. To me, it's a bit of a risky pick in
the Top-10 but after that near the middle of the first round seems like good value.
My comparable for him is Tyson Barrie as that's who he reminds me of with his skating
and puck handling abilities though he may be even more dynamic. I could easily see
some teams see him as Erik Karlsson on offence and a big giant question mark on
defense and decide to roll the dice.
If he develops and turns out to have only what can be considered average defensive
ability I think you have to call that a win and that team would end up with a hell of a
player. I wouldn't bet on it though.

#13. Cody Glass, C Portland, WHL
62 178lbs
Comparable : Sam Reinhart
Upside : 2nd Line Center / RW
Floor : 3rd Line Center / RW

When I got my first good look at Cody Glass I was underwhelmed with his overall game.
There was a lot of hype around this player about how he was putting up a ton of points
in Portland but for me on that night, he was just ok and nothing about his game really
stood out for me. I watched him again at the CHL Top Prospects game and again, I was
expecting more...at least from a guy who was starting to get traction as a top-15 pick.
Then, I got another chance to watch him play for Canada at the U18 tournament and he
had a real impact right away in his first game against Switzerland but didn't do much
the rest of the way in that tournament and I kind of came away underwhelmed. So I
started to ask myself "what is the deal with this guy and where is all the hype coming
from"? Well, the hype is probably coming from the points that he's putting in Portland
which is impressive but never really tells the whole story. So I started to look at Glass
from a different angle...maybe he's not going to be that upper tier player that is going
lead your team but more of a 'middle of your lineup' type of guy that still ends up an
important part of your team? So I went back and watched 5 or 6 random Winterhawks
games from this past season and started watching him under a different lens.
To me, Cody Glass is like Sam Reinhart and that's certainly not half bad. He's got good
size, is a strong skater with a great shot. He's a much more physical player than Reinhart
and he is able to produce good numbers. The reason I'm comparing him to Sam
Reinhart is because back in 2014, mostly everyone had Reinhart in their Top-3 and a lot
of people had him as the #1 overall prospect. I ranked him 6th overall and I quote "This
is just a gut feeling that hes just not going to be as good as everyone expects. That said,
he should still become a very effective 2nd line center in the NHL if all goes well". I
could see the skill but there was just something that made me think he wouldn't
translate over to the pros as well as people thought. The jury is still out on that one but I
see Cody Glass in the same sort of light. That being said, if you're picking in the middle
of the first round; it's a good gamble to take and he should still end up at minimum a
really solid NHLer for a lot of years.

There is way too much skill and a solid all-around package for Martin Necas not to have
heard his named called early come draft day. But for me, there is still a good amount of
risk that goes along with selecting this player. I see him as a boom or bust kind of player.
He's highly skilled but if worse comes to worse would he still be able to adapt his game
for a 3rd line role? I'm not convinced he's the type of player who could or would easily
do that. Even so, Necas is a very smooth and strong skater and he stands out in that
regard whenever he steps onto the ice. Make no mistake, this is an offensive player
whos' main focus is creating scoring opportunities for either himself or his teammates.
He seemed visibly frustrated at the U18 tournament as things didn't go his way but to
me that seemed more like an overall chemistry issue rather than anything else.
My comparable for him is David Pastrnak and I believe that if Necas lives up to his
potential, that's the type of player he could become.

I had a real hard time getting a good read on Nick Suzuki and since that's the case, I
wanted to see him in a bunch of different games from different times throughout the
year to make sure I wasn't just catching him during a 'lull'. He's a really talented kid but
for me, he doesn't really control a lot of the play but plays his game within how the game
develops instead.
It's not necessarily a bad thing but players who tend to play that way usually end up
really good complimentary players rather than key players. He's a player that can and
will play in all situations and is especially proficient on special teams. He's a good but
not great skater, (it won't hold him back) makes really smart plays with the puck -
handling it or passing it...he's a great playmaker and he's got a solid work ethic.
My comparable for him is T.J. Oshie as I find he plays the same kind of skill game. Just
like Oshie, who was also drafted as a center I could see Suzuki ending up converting to
wing. I think at worse, if he doesn't reach his full potential, you might have a Kris
Versteeg type of player which wouldn't be half bad.
I could see teams being all over the board with this player depending on how much they
like him.

My comparable for Henri Jokiharju is John Klingberg and I think it's very fitting
because Klingberg is a player that the Dallas Stars selected in the 5th round without
much fanfare until he broke into the NHL causing everyone to wonder "where the hell
did this guy come from?!?!"
For me, Jokiharju feels like he's going to be that kind of player...he's currently flying
under a lot of people's radar but every single time I saw him play, whether it was with
the Portland Winterhawks, for Finland at the U18 tournament (2016) or at the World
Junior Summer Showcase, I always came away impressed. That's good enough for me.
Jokiharju is a fantastic skater, he makes smart decisions with the puck and moves it
extremely well. He has a pretty good shot and competes really well...he's a hard worker.
He probably needs to fill out as he's a little on the light side but I believe that will come
with time.
Like Klingberg, expect a longer development curve with this player (3 years or more) but
once he gets there it should be well worth it.

I think I like Shane Bowers more than most and I think he's maybe a little underrated.
Maybe it's because his skating stride reminds me of Joe Sakic in the way he flies around
the ice (in terms of style). I think that it's probably more the even and consistent effort
that I saw from him each and every shift that I saw.
Bowers is a quick and elusive player with deceptive speed and excellent acceleration.
He's a good playmaker who is dangerous off the rush. He doesn't shy away from physical
play but doesn't go out of his way to engage either. He's a bit on the smaller size now but
he should reach a more ideal playing weight of 190-195 lbs as he matures and develops.
My comparable for him is Robbi Fabbri, a player that I personally underrated his draft
year...I think it's a solid comparison since Fabbri ended up getting drafted 21st by St-
Louis and this is right around where Bowers is ranked by the concensus.
I think he should go a bit higher than that personally, really impressed with this kid.

I see many similarities between Urha Vaakanainen and Jonas Brodin. Both are very

about the same size and see the ice very well. I was extremely high on Brodin his draft
year and while I think he's become a very solid NHL player, I thought he'd have taken
another step by now but at only 24 years old there is still time on that end.
I don't see Vaakanainen as having the offensive awareness that would make him a
higher pick but in my mind, he's an extremely safe pick. He has a good outlet pass and is
a hard worker with a great work ethic. I didnt find that he was overly physical but he
certainly holds up his end on that front.
The team selecting him will likely be getting a Top-4 D-man who can skate and move the
puck well and those types of players are at a premium in today's NHL.

Another one of my favourites. Kole Lind is a smart and clever player who's offensive
awareness is evident every time he steps on the ice. He's a strong forechecker, a good
skater and gives a good second effort. What I like the most about his game is his abilty to
get into the right lanes to get into scoring position or change angles and find teammates
within those lanes and create scoring chances. It makes playing with this kind of player
and developing chemistry really easy.
He has a great offensive mind and instincts for the game. This is a player with a high
hockey IQ which should allow him to put up points at the next level. Having said all that
isn't to suggest that he's a one-dimensional player, in all of my viewings he's been a
defensively responsible and conscious player.
My comparable for him is Elias Lindholm as I find he's also that kind of lanky,
playmaking winger. I think Lind is probably a better playmaker while Lindholm

Comparable : Mike Green
Upside : Middle Pairing Offensive D-Man
Floor : Bottom Pairing D-Man

Tim Liljegren is a fantastically smooth skater and can move the puck extremely well.
He's got a very good shot, he makes good reads and he can also set up his teammates.
He's not really a physical player but he does stand out when he's on the ice. For me,
although he's a kid who is clearly really athletically gifted, he seems to play too much
like an individual at times and too often it seemed like it needed to be about him and
less about the team. That's a bit of a red flag for me although not necessarily a deal-
breaker. From an observer's stand point, too often did he seem visibly frustrated when
things didn't go his way and it seemed to affect his game. He's going to have to work on
that. Still, there is a lot to like with what the player can do on the ice if you think he'll
end up maturing and becoming more of a team player. I expect a team to jump on him
early based on talent alone.
He had a really difficult U18 tournament and was actually better at last year's event than
he was this time around. Maybe some of that was due to the expectation levels that are
on him right now but that's not going to get easier in any case.
Liljegren kind of reminds me of Ryan Murphy with all of the hype that surrounded him
in the 2011 NHL Draft. The concensus ranked Murphy as a sure-fire Top-10 pick but
whenever I watched him play, there was just something that was 'off' about his game
that was hard to describe but led me to rank him 24th that year. Liljegren's game
reminds me of Murphy in that same way but I think he'll end up a better player just due
to sheer natural ability. So my actual comparable for him is Mike Green as I'm seeing a
player who is athletically gifted and offensive-minded which is what Green has been
throughout his career. In the end, I see him as a middle pairing d-man and his floor
could be as low as a #6 bottom pairing guy.

A quick and agile puck-moving D-man, Erik Brannstrom had a fantastic U18

stocky and solid. In every single viewing I've had of this player, he will engage other
players physically...he's not afraid at all. To give you an idea, I saw Brannstrom play in
the U18 tournament in 2016 as a 16 year old and it was still the same thingthe kid is
fearless and I absolutely love that about him.
He's an effortless skater which helps him carry the puck out of trouble when needed.
Sometimes he will try to do too much with the puck and holds on to it too long instead of
making a simple pass but I think that is fixable and not a long-term concern. He has a
good shot and is a strong option on the Power Play.
My comparable for him is Torey Krug as I find he plays that same kind of game. I think
Brannstrom has middle pairing upside and a pretty high floor, I'd be surprised if he

One of the few true power forward-types in this draft. I am a huge fan of Grant
Mismash. I just love the way he plays the game. He's a strong two-way player with a very
good skill set. He's a pretty good skater with an excellent work ethic and he plays a
tenacious game. He battles hard in the corners and against the boards and probably has
an underrated offensive game. He's a physical and defensively responsible player.
Mismash is set to continue his development at the University of North Dakota starting
this fall.

I think Mismash is a guy who compares favourably with a player like Nick Foligno. Just
like Foligno, it's likely going to take some time for him to develop but gradually he'll get

This guy is one of my favourites and I think he has Top-6 upside but could easily adapt
his game to play anywhere in the lineup and that's where the value is for me. A really
safe pick.

#23. Owen Tippett, RW Mississauga, OHL
61 203lbs
Comparable : Phil Kessel
Upside : 2nd Line Goal-scoring RW
Floor : AHL All-Star

I have watched Owen Tippett play for a long time and I've never really come away
impressed with his overall game. There is a lot to like with the offensive part of his game
but he has holes in other parts that raise a bit of a red flag for me. For instance, I don't
see a ton of second effort on loose pucks/board battles and he often seems lackadaisical
gliding around waiting for plays to develop. Defense isn't his strong suit and neither is
his play away from the puck but this can be improved with time...actually, it will need
to. There are not many coaches who are going to tolerate half-hearted back-checks at the
NHL level. Now this may just be a "hey, I'm in junior and I'm a star player" type of thing
but I don't like to see those kinds of habits at any level.
For the positives, they are very easy to see: a very strong skater with a great stride and
breakaway speed. He's a North-South type of player that owns an absolute cannon for a
shot which is deadly and accurate. The offensive skill is evident but I believe he has
some work to do with his overall game before he gets to the next level.
My comparable for Owen Tippett is Phil Kessel because of the way he can skate and
shoot the puck but the comparisons end there. First and foremost, Kessel is a much
better all-around player...he was drafted as a center who was eventually converted over
to wing. I think Kessel is a better playmaker and creative player. I think Tippett has a lot
of talent but he will need to work very hard to shore up certain aspects of his game for
the next level. I don't believe this is the type of player who would do well as a 3rd/4th
line depth guy so it's probably Top-6 or bust so it's high risk, high reward with this
player.

Adam Foote's oldest of two boys playing on the Kelowna Rockets, Cal Foote is a huge kid
with good, two-way upside. He doesn't really play the game the way his dad used to as
he has much more offensive capabilities and an offensive mind-set. I think hes probably
well-rounded in all aspects of the game but will end up more of a two-way D-man than a
defensive stalwart.
He makes good reads and anticipates well and is a solid defender who can log a lot of
minutes. He also gets pucks through and understands that sometimes the big slapper
isn't always the best option and a well-placed wrister can lead to rebounds and offensive
chances.
As far as top upside goes, I don't think I see a top pairing guy but more of a middle
pairing player like his comparable David Savard, if all goes well. He will definitely need
to improve his skating (acceleration and top speed) as it's probably a notch below where
it should be but if he's anything like his dad, he'll make sure he gets it up to where it
needs to be.

I think when you're looking at a player like Lias Andersson, you have to like what you
see. I'm not really 100% convinced that whichever teams that selects him is going to be
getting a huge 'steal' by taking him in the first round but I think he's a solid selection
and that adding a talented player that can play on your 2nd or 3rd line is what most
teams would be looking at.
The things that stand out for me are most obviously his speed, his puck control and his
all-around smarts. He may not be the biggest player but he's got a stocky build and he
doesn't shy away from the cornersthe physical game isn't going to faze him.
My comparable for him is Mikael Backlund because that's who he reminds me of...a
pretty good all-around player. I think Lias Andersson is the type of player that can play
anywhere in your top-9 and that's where the value is for me near the later part of the
first round.

I think as long as you're not expecting too much out of a player like Nicholas Hague and
can see the value in the kind of player he is then you're going to be happy with this
selection. Hague is a huge kid at 6'6" and while they say "you can't teach size", there is a
lot to like about the way this guy plays the game. He's a good skater, makes a great first
pass, makes 'the safe play' the majority of the time but he's probably not going to put up
a ton of points at the NHL level. He has an offensive game but I don't expect him to
become a big point-producer.
From my perspective, Hague is a lot like Matthias Ekholm and plays a solid, defense-
first game and anything else on top of that is gravy. My top upside for Hague is that he
can become a very good middle pairing defensive defenceman and I think he has the
potential to get there.
With this player in particular, I believe he has a high floor and will become at least a
bottom pairing guy and that's where the value is for me.

When you play on the worst team in the WHL, I think there is a tendency that you might
get overlooked and sometimes it's tough to look good. Hayden Fleury's little brother
Cale didn't have much help this season.
I think the Kootenay Ice captain is one of the most underrated players in this year's
draft. He's definitely one of my favourites and the type of player I'd want on my team.
He's a fluid skater and moves the puck very well, he's got excellent offensive and
defensive awareness. He's a strong two-way player with good anticipation and an
excellent passer. He works hard and gives a consistent second effort. For me, he's the
type of player that the more I watch him play, the more I like him.
My comparable for him is Matt Dumba and I see him as that type of player. Just like
with Dumba, it's going to take some development time for him to get to where he needs
to be but I think he'll get there. In fact, Ill be really surprised if this guy doesnt become
a really good player.
I expect Fleury to be taken somewhere in the second round but some smart team will

I had the chance to watch Klim Kostin play in the Canada-Russia series back in the fall. I
was surprised at just how much this kid reminds me of Valeri Nikushkin both in terms
of talent and how they see the ice and they seem to have same skating style as well.
The talent with this player is unmistakable but I think the fact that he didn't play in
North America this season (Kootenay - WHL) and chose to stay in Russia might work
against him. The way the situation unfolded with Nikushkin returning to Russia and
Dallas losing out on their 10th overall pick...I think that signals a little bit of a 'buyer
beware' type of situation with selecting Kostin. Even if you do pick him, does he end up
going back if things don't go his way and he's unsatisfied with his role/usage? He's
obviously big and really talented but with all of those question marks, I could see him
ending up as a late 1st round / early 2nd round pick.
Could be a real steal if none of the concerns end up being factors at all but it's still a risk
and why I rank him late in the 1st round.

Probably the most underrated prospect in this years' draft. This is how Johnny
Gaudreau becomes a 4th round pick and Sebastian Aho only a 2nd round pick. If scouts
have seen the same thing that I have with this player then he's a late 1st round pick and
anything after that is a steal, in my opinion.
Evan Barratt has upper-level vision, anticipation and hockey sensethis kid makes
things happen on the ice by making great reads and using his teammates effectively. He
doesn't shy away from physical play though that's not really his game. Barratt is set to
play for Penn State University starting this fall but I wouldn't be surprised if he ended
up changing his mind and heading over to Flint (OHL) who own his rights. It could be a
better option, developmentally speaking for this player.
He's one of my favourites and I think he's going to end up being a player. My
comparable for him is Johnny Gaudreau because they share outstanding vision,
creativity and playmaking ability though I don't expect Barratt to reach that level.
Do not expect this player to make an early jump to the NHL, I believe he is likely 3-4

I really didn't know what to expect when I got my first look at Ryan Poehling but I just
kept getting that feeling that I had seen this guy play before and it took a good 4-5
games until I realized that I was looking at a Colin Wilson CLONE. That's not
necessarily a bad thing because Colin Wilson is a solid NHLer but if you're picking really
high in this year's draft, I feel like there are probably some better options with better
overall potential.
Poehling has the ideal size, skating ability and two-way ability that you need as an NHL
center. I think where he comes up a bit short, at least in my view is on the playmaking
and creativity part of the game. He's really a north-south type of player and will go into
the dirty areas to score. I think Colin Wilson is the perfect comparable for this player as
he was ranked very high during his draft year, drafted very high (7th overall in 2008)
and probably has never really lived up to that billing but has still had a pretty good NHL
career thus far.
I will say one thing, I believe Poehling's floor is pretty high, so for him to make it to the
NHL in some capacity is a really good bet. I think any team selecting anywhere from
#20 to #35 would be getting good value but any higher than that and I think it could be
a reach. A solid, safe pick to add two-way ability to the depth of an organization.

I truly believe that if David Farrance was 6'2, he'd be ranked in the top 15 of this year's

stride and excellent puck mover and even better puck handler. He plays a solid overall
game and makes good decisions with the puck.
Along with his strong puck moving abilities, he has the ability to skate the puck out of
the defensive zone almost at will and defenders who can do that are at a premium in
today's NHL.
I like Farrance more than most and I think 2-3 years at B.U. will do wonders for his
overall development. My comparable for him is Josh Morrissey and I think that
Farrance has a really good shot at becoming that kind of player.
I think his top upside is probably a middle pairing d-man and he has a relatively high
floor for a player that's probably set to be selected as a 2nd round pick. One of the most

Mackenzie Entwistle is a big, strong two-way center that plays a North-South type of

could be categorized a bad thing but it's not when it also happens to be your floor.
I see MacKenzie Entwhistle as one of the safest picks in the draft and a kid who's a hard
worker with a great work ethic. The times I've seen him play, he leaves it all out there.
He's a pretty good skater and has a good, hard shot but he'll rarely wow you with an
incredible skill play...but he gets in there down-low in the dirty areas and he'll finish his
checks. I think he may lack the creativity and playmaking abilities to make him more
than a 3rd line player / depth player but I think he could be an excellent one.
My comparable for him is Charlie Coyle as I see him in that kind of mold though I don't
think he'll reach that level offensively speaking. Teams needing to bolster their depth

defensive ability. The type of player who will fly somewhat under the radar. Excellent
work ethic...just a solid all-around player. Because of all of those factors, I think he
projects as an NHL player but is his potential as a top-6 forward or more of a 3rd / 4th
line player? That's the big question but I believe the floor is probably higher on this
player as opposed to many others who are ranked where he's projected to go (late 1st /
early-middle 2nd round).
I definitely see him as a player who can adapt his role and play anywhere in your lineup.
My comparable for him is Mika Zibanejad as he's another player who I saw as having
2nd/3rd line center potential back in 2011 and while it's hard to pinpoint exactly how it's
going to work out, you are going to end up with a solid NHL player in any case when it's

After being drafted 1st overall in the WHL by Brandon back in to 2014, expectations

For me personally, I don't really see top-end potential as I've seen him ranked in the

saw him for the first time, he kind of looked to me like a 'Ryan O'Reilly-lite' in the
manner in which he skates and forechecks...that's kind of who he reminds me of. I don't
think the top-end skill is there though with this player although there is a lot to like.
I don't think anyone can ever accuse the man called "JAD" to not give a full and

a prototypical 'team player' and you really need those kinds of players.
My comparable for him is Nick Bonino and I think that's a pretty good comparable in
terms of skill and talent and how I see him developing in the future. I think he has an
outside shot at becoming a 2nd line Center but that's if he really exceeds what he's

#38. Antoine Morand, C/LW Acadie-Bathurst, QMJHL
510 175lbs
Comparable : Alex Tanguay
Upside : Top-6 Playmaking Forward
Floor : AHL All-Star

Antoine Morand is a great skater and a shifty player who competes hard and has a high
Hockey IQ. He is highly skilled and can dangle with the best of them. Morand is highly
creative and sees the ice extremely well. He's able to identify and get into the right areas
to score or setup teammates. He played center last season for the Acadie Bathurst Titan
in the QMJHL but at 5'10" and 175lbs I think odds are good that he ends up playing
wing if and when he makes it to the NHL. I really like this player and in the viewings I
had, he took his role as the teams' best center seriously and gave solid, consistent efforts
at both ends of the ice. I think his defensive game still needs work which isn't unusual
for an offensive player that age.
For his comparable, I'm going old school again with Alex Tanguay as I see many
similarities in both players. Tanguay was also a center with Halifax way back when, he
also put up over a point per game his draft year, was somewhat undersized and had
defensive deficiencies.
I see Antoine Morand as a bit of a gamble as I'm not convinced he can adapt his game to
play on a 3rd or 4th line if he's unable to crack a Top-6 at the NHL level. So hes kind of
a boom or bust prospect but he could be a real steal though. I really like him and hes
one of my favourites, I think hes going to be a player.

#39. Kailer Yamamoto, RW Spokane, WHL
57.5 146lbs
Comparable : Artemi Panarin
Upside : Top-6 Playmaking Forward
Floor : AHL All-Star

Generally speaking, wingers who are as small as Yamamoto (5'8" - 146 lbs) who play a
pure skill game don't tend to stick unless they are a really special talent. Players like
Brendan Gallagher, Cam Atkinson and Brian Gionta all have a bit of 'bite' to their game.
Still, a lot has changed in the NHL in the past 5-6 years...no longer are smaller players
so easily overlooked. As a general rule though, most NHL teams will look for size and
grit on the wings on their 3rd and 4th lines especially if that's an element that is missing
on their top 2 lines, so depending on who's doing the drafting, how their team is made
up can make a big difference. I don't think there's much doubt that Kailer Yamamoto is
a 1st round talent skill-wise but will teams take the first round gamble on him knowing
that he's likely a "top-6 or bust" type of prospect?
Yamamoto is a quick and agile player with outstanding vision, creativity and playmaking
ability. His comparable is Artemi Panarin as he plays that kind of style with outstanding
offensive abilities. Will he reach that level? I'm not convinced but a good gamble to take
as a mid-second pick.

I think Filip Westerlund is underrated. A good all-round d-man who is a solid puck
mover and has very good defensive awareness. Those kinds of players are in high
demand in today's NHL. I don't think he'll ever blow anyone away offensively but he
plays within his skillset in that regard. Westerlund makes good decisions with the puck,
makes a good first pass and plays a safe and steady game.
You don't get a lot of 'flash' with this player but he's someone you can rely on to get the
job done. He plays with a bit of an edge and my comparable for him is Anton Stralman
as I think he's in that mold. Just like Stralman took quite some time actually playing in
the NHL for people to start realizing that he's pretty darn good, I think the same will be
said of Westerlund.
I could see the same development curve as the type of player who graducally keeps
making strides and getting better and better. I expect this player to be selected a bit later
on in the draft, perhaps in the 3rd or 4th rounds. I think this kid will end up a sleeper

I've watched Markus Phillips play for a long time and while there is nothing that he does
that will ever really make you get out of your chair (good or bad), I see that as a positive
because it means he's doing his job. He's a very consistent player who you can count on
as a dependable part of your defensive corps. He's a good skater, makes a good first
pass, has a good stick and will take the body but isn't overly physical. He can move the
puck very well and plays a very solid defensive game. He's almost "Vlasic-like" in how
steady and dependable he is but I think that comparison is a stretch.
My comparable for him is Calvin de Haan and I think that's fitting for the type of player
Markus Phillips can possibly become someday. I think the team that's selecting him will
be getting an NHL player but he probably tops out as a #4 middle pairing guy but if not,
there's a very strong chance he'll end up a Top-6 player.
I think we're looking at a very safe pick and he will probably be selected in the second

Isaac Ratcliffe is a huge winger that plays a skill game. I think he's the kind of player
that will definitely engage physically and he'll go into the areas needed to scorehe's by
no means a perimeter player but I think those hoping he fills-out and becomes a
bonafide power forward will end up disappointed.
I don't see a lot of 'sandpaper' in his game but that doesn't mean he won't end up a good
NHL player. Ratcliffe didn't have much help last season playing on a poor Guelph
team...so there is that but on the other hand, it provided a great opportunity for him to
showcase himself with lots of ice time and being a go-to player. I liked his game at the
U18 tournament but Ratcliffe is a bit of a wild card for me. He's got all the tools but is
that all going to come together at the pro level?
My comparable for him is Benoit Pouliot because he was also a huge kid with a bit of a
slow stride and I think there are similarities between the two in the way they play. I
think there will be a team that will select him early (between #15 and #30) as the
projection with this player will be too attractive too pass up but I'm not convinced it's
the right call. I am far from certain he has Top-6 upside but I do think there's a very
good chance he ends up an NHL player in some capacity. Good value for middle of the

I think if there was a rule where you could only select goaltenders when they turned 20
years old, accuracy with those picks would rise dramatically. It's just such a difficult
position to gauge especially when these guys are only 18 years old. It's just really hard to
get a great read on how goalies will turn out. For me, it's usually more of a gut
feeling...I'll either like a guy or I won't but it's tough to explain why.
Keith Petruzzelli is my favourite goaltender from this year's draft. He's got great size and
he's got good lateral movement. I guess for me what separates him from the others in
this draft is his demeanor...I really like that about him. He seems really calm and even-

I think Petruzzelli is probably 3-4 years or more away from NHL duty as are most
goalies from this draft.

Alex Formenton is a gritty two-way player with blazing speed and in my mind, probably
the best forechecker in this draft. He is a high energy player with good defensive
awareness that seems to enjoy going out there and hitting everyone and just generally
being a player that is hard to play against. He's also got some skill and can certainly help
out and provide some scoring depth.
I don't quite see Top-6 upside at the NHL level but I think he's a pretty safe bet to
become a solid NHL player for a lot of years. At almost 62 and only 165lbs just wait
until he fills out...hes going to be even more effective.
My comparable for him is Antoine Roussel also a player that other teams hate to play
against...I see him ending up like that. I think that because of his speed and willingness
to engage physically that his chances at being an NHLer are excellent.
For a team that is looking to increase their grit, I think this is a pretty safe pick.

Jake Leschyshyn is the son of one of my favourites back in the day, defenceman Curtis
Leschyshyn. Unlike his dad, Jake is a forward and a pretty good one at that. Hes got
speed to burn, is an effective forechecker and hes also versatile as he can play center or
wing. Hes feisty and has a quick stride with good top end speed with a constant motor.
Leschyshyn played on a high-powered Regina Pats team until a knee injury ended his
season. Up until that point, he had put up some pretty nice numbers almost a point-per-
game. I would be surprised if his offense translated over to the NHL and I believe that
it's a more likely scenario that he ends up developing as a very good 3rd line forward
much like his comparable Casey Cizikas.
Thats who he reminds me of with his play. Like Cizikas, Jake Leschyshyn is a
defensively responsible player who can certainly chip in offensively but is known more

Just like the other top goalies ranked in this year's draft, Stuart Skinner has the ideal

lateral movement and excellent reflexes. I'm certainly no expert on goalies but in all my

a calm and relaxed demeanor which instills confidence in his teammates.
He probably didn't have the regular season that he would have liked, numbers-wise but
I think he made up for it with a strong playoff.
My comparable for him is Roberto Luongo as I think he's got a chance to be a good

Upside : 3rd Line Playmaking RW

Nikita Popugaev is a really intriguing prospect. He started the year on fire putting up 51
points in only 40 games with Moose Jaw (good for 7th in the league in scoring at the
time) and then was traded to Prince George where his point totals plummeted. This guy
is a mountain of a man and there are maybe a few question marks about his skating, (I
personally don't think it's that bad, he gets around) but what surprises me most is his
playmaking ability. A very underrated playmaker, he can find teammates in seams and
through traffic. He has above average offensive awareness which makes me like him
quite a bit. He isn't a physically dominant player though and I think that's unlikely to
change but he'll take his man out of the play when needed.
Overall this player is a bit of a risk but if you have a deep team, you can try and swing for
the fences with a pick like this. It was difficult for me to come up with a comparable for
this player as there just aren't very many 6'6" playmakers in the NHL but the closest I
could come up with is a playmaking version of Michael McCarron.
Pretty much a boom or bust type of prospect.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (geez, let's just call him UPL) is a really tall and technically

He was part of Finland's team again at that very same tournament this year and while I
thought he was still impressive, I think a lot of people maybe expected more. I think the
fact that Finland ended up with a silver medal in that tournament had a lot more to do

I was very impressed with Toropchenko's game at the U18 tournament. I thought he was
probably Russia's best overall player on the team that ended up with the Bronze medal. I
like the package of what Toropchenko brings to the ice. He's a tall, lanky player with
great wheels and a good shot. He's an excellent playmaker and sees the ice very well.
From the viewings I had, he has a strong work ethic and competes hard. He gives an
even effort every shift and that goes a long way, well at least for me. This is a player who
powers through checks and gives a noticeable second effort.
I think this is a player that compares well t0 a guy like Riley Smithsize-wise and
perhaps skating-wise as well. I think Toropchenko is probably a bit more skilled and has
better puck control. That's a real glowing review for him and I really like this player a
lot...now here come the questions marks : is this the type of player that will be happy
with spending some time in the AHL to develop and bide his time until he gets a shot at
the NHL? In short - the Russian Factor. If the answer is yes, then I think teams should
feel pretty good about taking this guy in the late 2nd or 3rd round. If the answer is "it
doesn't look good" then perhaps taking a late round flyer isn't the worst idea in the
world...take a gamble that he might develop and then sign him out of the KHL at age 22-

I am not as high on Pierre-Olivier Joseph as many appear to be but that doesn't mean he
won't pan out and be a good NHL D-Man. He played on a very deep Charlottetown
Islanders club with a bunch of 19-20 year olds ahead of him so it's a bit more difficult to
gauge how he'll develop. He certainly fared quite well putting up impressive numbers
Once Brisebois, Meloche and Neil all turn pro, he should be given the reigns of that
defense.
He's an excellent puck-mover and he's a good skater but I think he could stand to
improve his lateral mobility. I think he needs to fill-out but he definitely has the frame
to do so. In some of the games I saw, he was easily pushed around so I think he'll need
to get stronger as well but I don't see any of these things as major concerns. I see maybe
are some question marks about his decision making and that's the reason why I have
him ranked where I do. I see him as a bit of a risky pick. Would he have performed as
well or even better if he had a bigger opportunity with another club or did he perform as
well as he did because of that 'insulation'?? It's tough to tell.
My comparable for him is Alec Martinez and I see him turning into that kind of player, if
all goes well. I think P-O Joseph is athletically gifted enough to play in the NHL but it
will be his decision making that determines how high he'll end up on the depth chart.

Oettinger has ideal size, is athletic and has great reflexes. I tend to question his mental
make-up as he seems to get down on himself if he lets one by that he'd like to have back

defenceman but I wouldn't say that providing offense is his bread and butter.
I liked his game playing for Team Canada at the Under 18s, not only did he show he
belonged but he was one of the better d-man for Canada, in my opinion.
I'm comparing him to Jason Demers as he kind of flags to me like a guy that will develop
like that.
It could take a few years for him to come into his own, putting in the time in the AHL
before he surfaces as a 22-23 year old. Now that can seem like a real long-time away but
it's an investment and one that could pay off in the long run.

My comparable for Sasha Chmelevski is Tyler Toffoli who also happens to be a former
Ottawa 67 and also a 2nd round pick (LA) in his own right.
While I'm not 100% convinced that Chmelevski will turn out as good as that, I do think
they both play the same kind of north/ south game. Toffoli is a dangerous shooter and
while Chmelevski can really fire the puck, I think hes an even better playmaker.
I think I like this guy a little more than most because I think he has the talent to be a
Top-6 Forward at the NHL level but if it doesn't work out quite as well as you'd hope, he
is probably the type of player that can adapt his game and play more of a depth role like
a Lee Stempniak for example. That's where the value is for me with this player.
I expect him to hear his name called in the 2nd round and if he falls lower than that, it
would be excellent value.

Comparable : Valteri Filpulla
Upside : Top-6 Offensive Forward
Floor : KHL Regular

In this draft, if there was ever a poster boy for 'boom or bust' prospect, I think Pavel
Koltygin would take the cake. When I first got a look at this player, I was immediately
impressed. He's extremely smooth out there in the way he skates and controls the
puck...he's almost reminiscent of Alex Kovalev in that way....so he's a guy with high-end
skill to be sure.
He's a very good skater with lots of 'dangle' and an excellent playmaker as well. He had a
solid first year playing in North American in the Q for Drummondville. I really like him
but I find that he's a bit inconsistent. It's certainly not unheard of to have a young player
play with some degree of inconsistency but what teams are looking for is consistency
with 'effort' and 'compete' and he may have a little ways to go in that regard. Now, I
know that reading that is probably going to make some people cringe but the upside
with this player is certainly there.
We'd probably be looking at a first round pick otherwise. My comparable for him is
Valtteri Filpulla and I think that's a good one. I think if a team is able to snag him with a
late 2nd/early 3rd round pick, I think that's probably good value but I expect this player
to probably be selected later on in the draft.
Could be a sleeper pick.

Ivan Chekhovich is a fun prospect to watch and one of my favourites in this year's draft.
I really like the way this player thinks and plays the game. It seems that every time he's
on the ice, he's making something happen offensively. He has great straightaway speed
with an excellent top gear and makes plays at high speeds. He's a player who is difficult
to contain and will fight through checks.
He seems more comfortable at center but is versatile and can also play wing. He
reminds me of Artturi Lehkonen during his draft year. I wrote back then that he was the
type of player that goes a bit unnoticed but at the end of the game you look at the
scoresheet and he's got 3 points. I ranked Lehkonen just outside the first round (#32)
and he was drafted 55th by Montreal and it seems to have worked out.
For sure, there is the Russian Factor to consider but at least this player is already
playing hockey in North America. A good bet to be selected in the 2nd/3rd round.

This player has sky-rocketed up a lot of peoples lists in the past few months and Im not
really sure why. I don't think I see Top-6 player upside with Chytil but I think he's the
kind of player that can probably play anywhere in a team's Top-9. That kind of
versatility certainly comes in handy especially at playoff time.
My comparable for him is Marcus Kruger who, in my opinion is one of the best 3rd line

Joni Ikonen is a good all-around player who has a chance at becoming a solid 2nd line

My comparable for Ikonen is Derek Stepan as his style of play is who he reminds me of

see that there is definitely potential and upside with this player, I'm not in love with his

for one second that a team is going to make him a 2nd round pick but if he ends up a

Fabian Zetterlund is a pretty good player and one of my favourites. Good hockey sense,

For me, a player like this makes me think of Daniel Alfredsson as a late bloomer and 6th

believe Zetterlund is at the very beginning of his development like I do, he could be a
later-round steal. I don't think teams will take him with a 2nd round pick but I think if a

My comparable for him is Patric Hornqvist and I think he plays that kind of game as

Upside : Top-9 Offensive Forward

When you're having a look at these guys, some of them you can tell they just don't have
the necessary foot speed that's required at the next level. Sometimes, players are not
that far off though and with hard work, improvements can be made to bring them up to
an acceptable level but in Robertson's case, I think he's quite a ways away and his
skating needs a ton of work.
However, I will say this, IF he gets his skating up to what can be considered even
'average level' in the NHL, look out!! This guy is has some pretty deceptive playmaking
abilities and a great set of hands.
When it's all said and done though, I see his top upside probably as a 3rd Line player
much like his comparable Patrick Maroon and just like Maroon, it will take some time
for him to develop and continue to improve.
So I think he's a pretty risky player because of all those factors but if you're getting him

there.

About 5 years ago, a player like Noah Gadjovich would have been a sure-fire top-15 pick.
A big-bodied power forward-type who just put up 46 goals and 74 points would be at the
top of a lot of teams' draft lists. But we are clearly headed into a new era and teams that
are lacking speed are going to get left out in the dust.
Gadjovich is a player with good offensive awareness and obviously a goal-scorers touch.
He's the type of player that's going to pay the price in front of the net and work for every
inch of ice but his skating is going to hold him back unless he makes improvements on
that end. I find that he's a better playmaker than I initially gave him credit for when I
got my first look at him.
My comparable for him is Anders Lee a player who plays a good two-way game and has
natural goalscoring instincts as well. I think Gadjovich is a lot like that.

I'm usually hesitant to put 19 year olds in my rankings let alone a guy who is set to turn

5'7" but he is stocky and has top-end skills. He's a wizard on the power-play, he has a
good, hard deceptive shot and the way he controls and distributes the puck, you just
can't help but be impressed.
He's a good skater, a hard worker who forechecks well and has exceptional hockey IQ
and anticipation. He's just a really smart player on the ice. I think using a 2nd round pick
on a player whos been passed over twice before would be a bit of a stretch but I think
using a 3rd round pick or later would be good value in my opinion.
Having said that, I think there's a good chance he's selected in the later rounds. There is

He already has a solid first year in North America under his belt playing for Guelph in

He's a great skater, skilled playmaker with exceptional puck control but he really needs

this player if he has Top-6 talent or if he's more of a 3rd liner who can chip-in
offensively.
I do like him though, he'll actually win his fair share of board battles. In the end, I think
if he develops he's probably a tweener who will spend his time between the 2nd and 3rd
lines.
My comparable for him is Lars Eller who was one of my favourites coming out of the
2007 draft. It's never really worked out for Eller as a Top-6 guy though I still really like
him as a player.
I think Elvenes can possibly turn out like that, if all goes well.

Comparable : Carl Hagelin
Upside : Top-6 Offensive Forward

Kirill Slepets is an undersized forward who plays an all-around game. He has good
vision, a nose for the net, good offensive awareness and he's a quick & slippery player.
He's also a very good skater and a diligent forechecker & a hard worker. I like all of those
things about Slepets but here is the problem, I'm not 100% convinced he can be a top-6
forward at the NHL level and there just aren't very many 3rd+4th line Russian forwards
in the league. Those players tend to prefer to stay 'home' and play in the KHL and be
'stars' for more money rather than play a secondary role in the NHL.
Still, I think there is value in taking a late round flyer on one of these guys and holding
on to their rights. Letting them develop overseas and possibly bringing them over at age
22-23 could be a shrewd move if they turn out better than expected.
My comparable for him Carl Hagelin because I think Slepets is in that mold. Hagelin has
played on several different teams and adapted his game in order to stay in the NHL...if
Slepets is going to have a long NHL career; I believe he'd need to do the same.

I like what I saw from Rickard Hugg at the U18 tournament. Sweden's captain played an
important role on that club, playing in all situations. Hugg is a player who is easy to like.
He has good compete and he's a battler. He'll give that second effort that's required to
check his man or steal the puck. He's also an underrated playmaker and he knows how
to get into the right areas to score or set someone up.
I really like his all-around game...he has good offensive and defensive awareness. He's
not the greatest skater but with some work it can improve, I don't think it will hold him
back.
My comparable for him would have been John Madden (Center - New Jersey - for those
who remember that guy, who for a while was one of the best 3rd line centers in the
league) but that's a ways away so my comparable for him is Tomas Plekanec. I see Hugg
turning out a little bit like that. I'm not convinced that his offense is going to translate
but I do think he can chip-in and help and he's got a very good two-way game.
I think he's probably a little bit underrated but he's one of my favourites and he's got a
chance at ending up as a good 3rd line center.

Heponiemi is a good skater and an excellent playmaker. He can find players in seams
when it looks like those lanes are closed. He has the ability to draw defencemen to him,
slowing down the play and taking advantage with a slick pass.
My comparable for him is Mike Ribeiro as that's who he reminds me of in the way that
he skates and makes plays out there. Unfortunately, Heponiemi is only 149 lbs! Unless
teams think that he's going to be able to fill-out that slight frame of his, I can see this
player slipping to the later rounds.
I think adding 30lbs so that he can still only be considered 'small' seems like a stretch to
me though not impossible.
Hes got a lot of skill and talent though so it could be worth the gamble in the 3rd round

I've had the opportunity to watch Antoine Crte-Belzile up-close for a few years now and
there is just nothing flashy about this player, just solid defensive play. There is
something to be said about making the simple little plays instead of going for low-
percentage, risky ones.
Crte-Belzile has good defensive awareness, makes a good first pass and he's no
speedster but he's a fine skater. He has average size but he's stocky and I think once he
fills out a bit he'll be a more effective player.
Unfortunately, injuries have somewhat slowed down his development but hopefully
that's all behind him now. My comparable for him is Josh Gorges and I think he's that

Adam Ruzicka is a real wildcard. In my viewings of this player, he's just incredibly
inconsistent. He kind of shows you flashes of what he can do and then goes on stretches
where he's real quiet. The kid has ideal size for a big center or winger at close to 6'4" -
210 lbs and he's a pretty good skater as well.
For me he's just wildly inconsistent not only from game to game but shift to shift. He's a
talented kid who just kind of leaves you wanting more but perhaps that's a little unfair.
After all, he just completed his first season in North America playing for Sarnia (OHL)
and put up some good numbers.
My comparable for him is Patrik Berglund and I don't think I could find a better player
to describe Ruzicka. Just like how on some nights, you wonder why Patrik Berglund is
'only' playing on the 3rd line and other nights when you wonder how he was drafted as a

To sum it up, you take the good with the bad....he could be quite the find if he develops
some consistency and remains engaged for longer periods.

I got the opportunity to see Ostap Safin play at the U18 tournament this year. He is a
huge winger with ideal size and he plays more of a skill game. He is more of a North-
South type of player. He has good top-end speed though I think he could stand to
improve his first few steps/acceleration.
I see some immaturity to his game as I saw him often get rid of the puck too easily and
attempt low-percentage passes that immediately lead to turnovers. Could be a just a few
bad games or it could be that this is who he is. For me, what concerns me most about
him is that he didn't really seem engaged unless the puck was on his stick...which isn't
really what you want to see.
I could see some teams trying to get the jump on this type of player early making a
projection of what he could become but I am not really convinced, all I see when I see
him play is a Joe Colborne type.
Still, if you're in the mid-to-late 3rd round, that's probably good value at that point.

In my opinion, Josh Norris might be the most overrated prospect in this year's draft. In
all my viewings, I didn't once think to myself that he had first round talent. Norris does
a lot of things well but nothing really great. He had an excellent opportunity to showcase
himself at the U18 tournament playing a lot of minutes with some excellent linemates
and my impression coming away was 'just ok'. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for a
guy that's set to be a 1st or 2nd round pick.
My feeling is that late 3rd round value with this player is probably right on the money.
My comparable for Norris is Dominic Moore as I find they are both players that tend to
fly under the radar but play hard and compete. I really don't see his upside as any higher
than that and that's if everything goes perfectly well with his development.
I actually hope I am wrong on this one, as I was a big fan of his dad Dwayne when he

While I don't usually take a lot of stock into a what a stat like 'plus/minus' might have to

look at Jocktan Chainey and his -25 (in 55 games) as compared to the best on that
Halifax Club (Nico Hischier +20).
Having said all that, for me there is still something about this player that leads me to
believe that he could be an NHL player someday. What I like most about Jocktan
Chainey is the fact that he plays within his means. He doesn't try to force plays or try to
do too much. More often than not, he makes the simplest play and it's what's needed in
that situation. At the U18 tournament, he was able to play that way and he kind of
reminded me of Ron Hainsey.
I fully expect him to be a much later pick in this year's draft but I think he has an outside

I believe Clayton Phillips is at the very beginning of his development and the best is yet

won't turn 18 until September 9th.
He is committed to the University of Minnesota next year is where he'll continue his

Teuvo's younger brother impressed me while playing for Finland at the U18's this past

He's certainly not the biggest guy but he doesn't let it get in the way of getting the job

The sticking point for me is: I think he needs to get faster both with his feet and with his

for the next level or he'll be really limited, if he even makes it at all.
My comparable for him is Cody Franson who is bigger than Minulin but I believe kind of

Like his comparable Mike Hoffman, Kevin Hancock is a late bloomer. Hoffman was
selected in the 2009 draft as a 5th round pick as a 19 year old player who had been
passed over the year before. Hancock put up modest numbers last year playing for Owen
Sound only registering 28 points in his first full season in the OHL and was passed over

This season has been a different story as he's exploded for 30 goals and 85 points in 68
games. Now part of that is certainly opportunity and linemates but I think he's earned it
with his play.
Hancock is a smart player with good offensive awareness. He's a good skater with a
quick stride and has breakaway speed. He's dangerous off the rush. He competes hard as
well and gives a noticeable second effort. He will probably have to work on other parts of
his game, like his positioning and play away from the puck but nothing major stands out
for me in that regard. I think this is a good value pick in the 3rd round...if he continues

calling card is more of a two-way player with high defensive awareness.
I think that without question, he's going to need to work on his skating and more
specifically his first few steps/ acceleration. He has a pretty good top gear already.
Overall this is a smart player who can play with top players and probably fill-in

Kosorenkov is an excellent skater with an explosive first few steps that gives him an edge

#88. Ondrej Machala, LW Niagara, OHL
60 185lbs
Comparable : Tobias Rieder
Upside : Top-9 Offensive Forward
Floor : Czech Extraliga Regular

Ondrej Machala is one of my favourite prospects in this year's draft and I know and
understand full well that he is likely to be a late round selection. I think anyone that has
watched this kid skate and give it his all, whether that's with Team Czech Republic at the
U18 tournament or with the Niagara Ice Dogs, would have a tough time not liking him.
He's an excellent skater and a fantastic forechecker. He's got a fair bit of skill and talent
as well. He had a modest first season in North America playing for Niagara but I believe
bigger and better things await him starting next year as he gets more comfortable.
My comparable for him is Tobias Rieder who ended up a 4th round pick of the
Edmonton Oilers (I had him ranked 19th on my list in 2011) and I think Machala could
surprise and become a solid player, much like Rieder has done.

#89. Mark Rubinchik, LD Saskatoon, WHL
60 185lbs
Comparable : Ian Cole
Upside : Bottom Pairing Defensive D-Man
Floor : AHL Call-up

Mark Rubinchik has good size, a good stick and he's a good enough skater to get to
where he needs to be. I flipped-flopped a lot with this player watching him play
switching between being impressed and disappointed but I think there is a body of work
there that makes him an intriguing prospect.
The one thing that I like about him is that he plays a simple game and plays within his
means and doesn't try to do too much.
My comparable for him is Ian Cole as he seems to have approximately the same size and
skill-set and his upside is bottom pairing defensive d-man but it's no-where near certain
he will reach that level but he has a chance.

Upside : Top-9 Offensive Forward

Greg Meireles is a smooth skating, hard-working player with good anticipation and
great hands. He is an explosive player with a great first few steps and he's a player you
can count on to play in all situations.
He loves to play off the rush and can make plays at high speeds. My comparable for him
is Kris Versteeg and ultimately, that's the kind of player that I can see him becoming.
Probably a 3rd line player who can contribute on offense, can fill-in on the top-2 lines in
a pinch and a player who can fit in on any Top-9, much like Versteeg does.
He played center for Kitchener but I think I could see him ending up as a winger when
it's all said and done.

#91. Noel Hoefenmayer, LD Ottawa, OHL
60 190lbs
Comparable : Dennis Seidenberg
Upside : Bottom Pairing Two-Way D-Man
Floor : AHL Call-up

Noel Hoefenmayer is a two-way d-man that is a bit of a work in progress. He does a lot
of things well but still needs to shore up some areas of his game as well. He's a
defenseman who closes gaps well, generally has good positioning and has a good stick.
He's a bit of a choppy skater though and he will definitely need to improve his top gear
for the next level. I think he's also going to have to work on his defensive awareness as
well but he's got time as this is a player who is likely 4-5 years away.
He had a pretty good season offensively for the Ottawa 67s with 40 points in 62 games
but I'm not convinced that his offense is going to fully translate over to the NHL.
After 2 or 3 years of development in the AHL, I could see this player ending up as a
dependable two-way player who can chip-in offensively like his comparable Dennis
Seidenberg.

62.5 221lbs
Comparable : Luke Schenn
Upside : Bottom Pairing Defensive D-Man
Floor : AHL Call-up

At 6'3 and 220lbs, Luke Martin has the ideal size to play on the back-end in the NHL.
He's not the most fleet-footed guy out there but I think he gets to where he needs to go.
For me, a guy like Luke Martin compares well to another 'Luke'Luke Schenn.
I think they play the same type of game. He's a big-bodied, defensive d-man who is a
decent puck mover but I don't see much in the ways of offensive contributions. He's a
player who will engage physically but won't go out of his way to throw a big hit.
When it's all said and done, I think a team wanting to beef-up their defensive depth will
take him and late 3rd round should be good value.

#93. Maxime Comtois, LW Victoriaville, QMJHL
62 207lbs
Comparable : Magnus Paajarvi
Upside : 3rd Line Two-Way LW
Floor : AHL Call-up

I have watched Maxime Comtois for a long time and this is one guy where I guess I just
don't get it. I mean, I can see that he's a really good skater and his overall game is fine
but to me, nothing that would justify a 1st or 2nd round selection. For me, his overall
play in no way matches up with the enormous opportunities he's had to showcase
himself at every level. At the U18 tournament in 2016, I didn't think he looked great but
he was an under-aged player so he wasn't supposed to necessarily stand-out, though it's
nice when it does happen.
At this year's U18 tournament, he certainly wasn't the only player on Team Canada to
disappoint but I thought he had a poor tournament. He was put in a great situation,
playing with solid players and I just didn't see much out of him apart from a lot of
frustration.
My comparable for Comtois is Magnus Paajarvi as he was also a highly touted prospect
for a really long time only to have his draft stock fall his draft year. MPS dropped to 10th
overall and managed to salvage his NHL career by adapting his play as a role player. I
saw lack of finish offensively back in 2009 with Paajarvi and I think that Comtois is
similar in that regard as well. With that in mind, I can see Comtois as a player who
drops on draft day...I don't think I'm the only one who sees him this way. I'm ranking
him as a third round pick but I think that he probably won't drop that far and someone
will take him in the 2nd round.
Definitely not my kind of player...he could surprise but I doubt it.

#94. Logan Cockerill, LW/C US NTDP, USHL
59 163lbs
Comparable : Jason Zucker
Upside : 3rd Line Offensive Forward

There's no question about it, Logan Cockerill is certainly under-sized but he's still a
really solid prospect. He's a very good skater who makes smart plays and stands out due
to his high level of compete and tenacious checking. I saw him play as a center but I
think at the pro level, there's a good chance he becomes a winger.
My comparable for him is Jason Zucker as that's who he reminds me of playing for
Team USA at the U18 tournament as an undersized guy in 2010. Just like Zucker,
Cockerill is a fiesty player and flies a bit under the radar but he has a chance at a depth
role in the NHL if everything goes well.
He's one of my favourites and I think he's underrated...good value for a 4th + round draft
pick.

#95. Ian Mitchell, RD Spruce Grove, AJHL

Comparable : Ryan Murphy
Upside : Bottom Pairing Puck Moving D-Man
Floor : AHL Call-up

I had the opportunity to see Ian Mitchell play for Team Canada at the U18 tournament
and I came away with a mixed bag. He is a really good skater and an excellent puck-
mover and both those qualities make him a real interesting prospect. However, I feel
that he has below average defensive awareness and thats something that will definitely
hold him back at the next level unless it improves.
He is slated for the University of Denver in the fall, so he's going to have time to work on
his game. He's likely going to be there for 3 years and then possibly another couple in
the AHL before he's ready, if he shores up his defensive game. My comparable is Ryan
Murphy and although he didn't follow the same path, I think the same kind of issues
have held him back after being a high first round pick.
I think this could be a good gamble in the 4th round.

My comparable for him is Jordie Benn as he's the same kind d-man that you don't really
notice but gets the job done. I see Karow possibility developing into that kind of d-man
if all goes well.
Karow is set to play for Boston College in the fall and I think he'll need a good 3-4 years
of development but could come out of it an unheralded but solid d-man, much like
Jordie Benn.

He's set for Providence College in the fall where he'll continue to develop. I believe he
will need to get stronger and will need to improve his positioning...he can get caught

My comparable for him is Mark Barberio and it might take some time for him to get
there but he's got a shot at someday possibly becoming a bottom pairing two-way d-

Whenever I've seen Marcus Davidsson play, I've come away a little underwhelmed. He's

He has a good first outlet pass. I don't think we're looking at Top-4 upside here with this
guy but Kemp could end up a solid bottom pairing defensive d-man. He will absolutely
need to improve his skating to get to the next level and he can do that next year at Yale
as he continues his development.
A good gamble for a 4th + round pick.

#100. Mikey Anderson, LD Waterloo, USHL
511 197lbs
Comparable : David Schlemko
Upside : Bottom Pairing Two-Way D-Man
Floor : AHL Call-up

Mikey Anderson is another in a long line of left-hand shot d-men who can move the
puck but are under 6'0" tall. This draft is literally filled with that type of player. If he's
anything like his brother Joey, then scouts are going to love his compete level because
his brothers' is off the charts.
Anderson is a good puck-mover who can provide some offense from the blueline but I
wouldn't count on it at the next level. Instead, he'll probably be more of a 20-25 point
guy who is going to chip-in occasionally. That's IF he's able to develop and continue to
improve. His play was fine for the USHL but for college and then the pro level, he will
need to improve his overall quickness, both feet and decision-making in order to have a
shot.
In my mind, he's probably a good pick if you're selecting in the 4th round and you want
to have some depth on the backend. He's a long-shot but could surprise. I think he's a
player who compares well to a guy like David Schlemko - nothing flashy but what you
