MECHANISED TUNNELLING IN BRITTLE ROCKS

Tunnel construction in brittle rock conditions is associated with failure phenomena which develop both at
the tunnel face and in the heading. A number of approaches have been developed to explain these
phenomena and are linked to the type of mechanisms which can be anticipated. Brittle failure is found to
be associated with massive to moderately jointed rock masses at great depth which are expected to be
encountered during excavation of Alpine tunnels. The adoption of mechanised tunnelling (TBM) in such
conditions is highly desirable and the rate of advance is linked to the counter-measures which can be
developed in order to cope with the types of instability which may develop. The need arises in theses
cases to gain insights into the understanding of the identification and assessment of the interactions
between ground, tunnelling equipment and support. With this in mind, the research studies under way
are intended to develop modelling methods and strategies to be adopted for the simulation of the
response of tunnels in brittle rock conditions with close attention paid to in situ observations,
performance monitoring, and experience gained from case studies available to the research group.
