Mrs. Baxter TBD

Second grade
Science
What is Liquid?

Essential Question(s)- What is liquid? What are the different properties of a liquid? Why do
some properties only have a purpose for liquid?

Standards
PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter
Different kinds of matter exist and many of them can be either solid or liquid, depending on
temperature. Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties. (2-PS1-1)

Learning Objectives Assessments

Students will be able to explain the Teacher will ask students whether the
difference between a liquid and a solid. object is a liquid or solid and have the
students describe the characteristics of a
liquid. The liquids will all go into a cup
together.

e: Homemade lava lamps (water bottles, water, oil, food coloring, alkaseltzer
tablets)
f: Anchor chart
g: Science book/ What is Liquid book (if there is time)

Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge- Students have been introduced to matter and
have heard of what liquid is.

Lesson beginning- The teacher will start with the song, then the teacher will ask what a liquid is
and what the characteristics are of a liquid? Next, the teacher will read the poem Solid and
Liquid. The teacher will read what a liquid is from their textbook, which will give the
definition. The teacher will introduce an anchor chart with facts about liquids and the students
will write down the two facts in their liquid journal page.

Instructional Plan-
1. Teacher will have objects in front of the students while they are in morning meeting
spots. The teacher will go around the circle and ask if the object is a solid or a liquid.
This will help the students review what a solid is, and learn what a liquid is. It will make
a layered bottle.

2. Students will learn about how the bottle has different letters because of density. They will
learn about air particles for liquid.

3. Students will go to their desk and make lava lamps with the teacher while following
directions. Each teacher will be in charge of a group. The directions will be given to the
teachers with what to do every step (first put oil in the bottle, than water, then give a few
alkaseltzer to each student). (15 minutes)

o Differentiation: Students are able to go to their desks if they need to move around. Students
who need help pouring the liquid into their cup will receive help. Students will hear the
definition of a liquid multiple times so they can comprehend it. Students can pick and choose a
fact from the board so students with dysgraphia will be able to take their time and copy from the
anchor chart. Students with different way of learning will get to hear the definition, see it, read it
and write it down.

o Questions: What is a liquid? What is the difference between a liquid and a solid? What
characteristics does a liquid have?

o Classroom Management: If students need to refocus, they can go to their desk. The teacher
will get 100% of the students attention before moving on. If the students arent listening, the
teacher will say 3...2...1 talking is done. If the students need a brain break, the teacher will
have them do ma...zinga or they will spread out in the room and make a wave! Teacher will
ask the students Who can show me what listening second graders look like?

o Transitions: Teacher will use the chime to get the students attention. The teacher will have
the students sit in their morning meeting spots. When the students go back to their desk, the
teacher will ask the students to pretend like they are swimming in water, using what color they
are wearing.

Closure- The teacher will ask the students to share one thing they learned in class today and
what makes a solid and liquid different. The teacher will direct kids to raise their hands if they
can answer the questions. Classmates agree (thumbs up) or disagree (thumbs down) with the
response.

Solids and Liquids POEM

A solid is a solid,
It doesn't change its shape.
It cannot move around,
It stays in just one place.
Your desk is a solid,
And so is your chair.
Just look in your classroom-- Wow!
They're everywhere!

A liquid moves smoothly.

We say that it flows.
From one place to another-- How quickly it goes!
We know that most liquids Are easy to see.
With no shape of their own,
They're not like you and me.
