1) The tolerance range for all valves applies only when checking the valve clearance.

If the valve clearance is outside of the tolerance range always adjust to specified value.

Notes
Adjust valve clearance with engine cold (wait at
least 30 minutes after shutting off engine, even if
only operated for short time).
Turn engine in normal direction of rotation with
special tool.
Clean extremely dirty cylinder head covers before
removing.

Remove cylinder head covers and clean.

Replace cylinder head cover gaskets. Check
sealing surfaces on cylinder heads and cylinder
head covers, remove any gasket residues
present.

Attach turning device (special tool) for engine

at observation hole.

Adjustment of the valve clearance can be

accomplished using two different methods.

Daimler AG, 6/29/12, G/06/12, wh0560lkw0020x, 0560.20 - Adjustment of the valve clearance Engines 401, 401 LA, 402, 402 LA, 403, 421, 422, 422 A/LA, 423, 423 LA, 441, 441 LA,Page

Method 1 - Adjusting each cylinder separately
according to injection sequence.
Turn engine until piston for cylinder to be
adjusted is precisely at top dead center of
compression stroke. The valves must be closed
and the tappet rods must be easy to turn. This
position is reached when the valves for the
cylinder with synchronously running piston
overlap (see table, page 0560.20 /2).

Method 2 - Adjusting all valves in two crankshaft

positions.
Turn engine until TDC mark on flywheel
coincides with adjustment edge (A) in observation
hole.

Check whether cylinder 1 is at ignition TDC or

overlap TDC (at ignition TDC both valves are
closed).
Check and adjust valves according to table.

Setting valve clearance

Measure valve clearance between rocker arm

and valve stem with a feeler gauge (arrow).
Valve clearance is correctly set if the feeler
gauge can be drawn through with slight
resistance.

Note
It is only necessary to correct valve clearance if
it is outside the tolerance range (+0.20 mm or -
0.10 mm.

Slacken locking nut (2) for adjusting. Set valve

clearance by turning the adjusting screw (1).
Screw locking nut tight. Re-check valve
clearance; correct, if necessary.

Fit on cylinder head covers and screw

fastening bolts tight. Tightening torque 25 Nm.

Detach cranking device and mount cover lid.
