Health & Physical Education Teacher

Career Objective

As a soon to be graduate from The University of Auckland I seek a secondary education teaching
position for January 2018 in which I bring expertise in the Health and Physical Education curriculum in
years 7-15. I aspire to work along side experienced teachers in order to continue my professional
development and apply my knowledge and skills to support the education of adolescents in Aotearoa. I am
passionate about critical thinking, making learning visible and valuing diversity. I aim to work in a school
that values Tikanga Mori, student empowerment and involvement in extracurricular activity.

Philosophy

As Health and Physical Education centres specifically on issues of enduring interest to young people, I believe in teaching students
skills that are transferable to every-day life in order to help them navigate through their increasingly complex lives in wider society. At
the core of my teaching philosophy I believe there is a reciprocal relationship between teaching and learning therefore I strive to
create positive learning environments where my students and I feel respected, empowered and appreciate diversity. I believe
teachers need to provide all students with maximum opportunities to learn, and having good classroom management skills is an
essential part of this. I adopt a firm but fair management style and place emphasis on consistency. I have demonstrated the ability to
be adaptable, quick thinking and use initiative to solve problems. I consider myself an approachable teacher who displays care,
concern and sensitivity for students whilst ensuring professional boundaries are upheld. I draw on Nelson Mandela's statement
"education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" and aim for all students to feel empowered through
my pedagogy believing they can do anything they set their minds to.
