1.0 Introduction
I worked at Mega Switch gear for my project work during my final year of B.E. in
instrumentation and control. I started working there at 1st July 2013 and finished my
work at 1st May 2014. My project title is PLC BASED AUTOMATIC BATCHING SYSTEM
USNING LOADCELL. This was the group project and my responsibilities in this project
were to programme the PLC and establish the communication between the PLC and
hardware of the project. And design the SCADA page for it. So that one can monitor and
watch the whole process on the computer screen. And if there are any faults generated
in the system, the system will identify these faults and shut down by itself and shows
the triggered alarm events on the SCADA page. This is very important as a safety point
view. Later in the sections below it shows some technical and non-technical
responsibilities I perform during my time at Mega Switch gear.

2.0 Company Profile

Mega Switch gears is the company established in year 1993 in the district of Vadodara
of state Gujarat in India. It is owned by Mr. K.B. Thakkar. They are actively involved in the
manufacturing, supplying, exporting and trading a wide verity of PLC panels, Bus Ducts,
control panels, APFC panels, Marshalling Kiosks, Testing Panels, Remote Tap changer
Control cubicle, Motor control centre etc. The company has a very advance
infrastructure that has each and every required equipment and divided and arranged
into various divisions like Research and Development, manufacturing, quality control,
Warehousing & Packaging. The production facility at Mega Switch gear is well equipped
with variety of highly quality high machines such as drill machine, horizontal sander
machine, drill machine, welding machine, automatic ferrule machine, hydraulic sharing
machine, bench grinder, hydraulic hand pallet truck, Hydraulic banding machine. The
company has a strong trade network within a India. With this robust sale network
company exports its products into the countries like Israel, Kenya, Romania, Russia,
Sweden, Syria, Tanzania, Virginia.

The company uses a highly advanced technology and exceptional quality raw materials
in order to design and manufacture the highly precise products. All these manufacturing
process monitored by companies highly skilled and professionally trained expert
supervisor and quality check team. Because of the qualities like durability, corrosion
resistance, longer service life, robust design, excellent performance the products
manufactured by the company are appreciated very much and are in high demand.
Products specification changed within a warehouse according to the clients special
requirements. Modern testing tools and technologies are used by various quality
inspectors in order to check and validate the manufactured products on the various
scales of the quality parameters. Mega Switch gear is certified by TUV SUD South Asia
Private Limited for ISO 9001:2008 for its strict quality policy. They are approve vendors
of NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation).
Mega Switch gear always try to look for the opportunity to improve the performance
enhancement according to the customers growing requirement. It verified products at
each and every stage of manufacturing such as Fabrication, Testing, Packing, Assembly,
and design, Wiring Testing, Fabrication and Dispatch. Company only accepts the raw
materials from the reputed suppliers only. Its the most sought after panel
manufacturing company because of this qualities like customer satisfaction and quality.

Besides working on the hardware side they also provides the software solution for the
hardware they make. They provides the P & ID/ flow diagram/ Truth table according to
the data receive by from clients requirement. The also provides the turnkey solution like
PLC and SCADA programming software for different domains like on-site on-demand
support. Client feels very user friendliness by the company in panel designing and
PLC/SCADA programming. Fault finding and report generation is very easy as the
programme writing method they use is very unique. They also provide the extensive
programming training to the engineer or client if required along with the fault finding
and report generation at their in-house fully audio-visual advance training centre for the
free of cost.
3.0 Technical Role:

I was included into a number of technical role described below:


1. My first job is that to understand the whole project as a functional point of view. Because
designing programming for whole system is a complex process and impossible if not
properly understood.
2. After defined the problem properly now is the time for planning for the timeline and
decide the strategy to meet the final dead line.
3. I am the person responsible to create the PLC programming for the whole system. The

program should be the error free and should perform every task that the system
intended to perform. And also develop the SCADA page which should help the operator
to monitor the process. The whole system is fully automatic.
4. The whole project was simulated on to the test control panel where reliability of the PLC
code was tested and verified.
5. The whole project is monitored by using a SCADA software. Which also helps to identify
and isolates the problem and generate particular error code for that to the operator,
who can easily diagnose the problem.
6. The PLC used by us is the one from DELTA Company, which also provides its own
programming software. And the SCADA software that we use for the project is Delta's
DIAView SCADA system.
7. The other hardwares those are used in the project, the load cells, the signal conditioner
units, the motors, actuators are also linked into the system in order to facilitates full
system automation.
8. I am also responsible for testing validating and the documentation of the whole project.

9. The whole project is done within time limit and demonstrated at the end of the semester
at the university. And the whole project was working efficiently.
4.0 Non-Technical Role

Apart from the technical responsibilities I was included into a number of non-technical
roles briefed below:
1. I worked in a team during my project work at Mega Switch gear. As working in the team
I have to submit my weekly logs to the project supervisor and also need to take a part in
the weekly training sessions in order to get sufficient knowledge about PLC
programming.
2. For the safety during the whole work, special mandatory training session were held at a
company at the beginning of the 1st semester. I was trained with proper industrial
standard safety guidance like safely working conditions for all the machines, safely
evacuation procedures in case of emergency and some standards about use of the
softwares etc. I followed these instruction during my journey at Mega Switch gear.

5.0 Competencies of the engineers

1. Exceptional communication skill


At Mega Switch gear I worked with the people from multiple religion, communicating
with them teaches me the different effective way to communicate with them. It also
taught me how to tackle the problem professional way if there is one. This improves my
confidence and problem solving skills.

2. Logical thinking
There is difference between gaining theoretical knowledge and apply it in the field,
which I learned during my time at Mega Switchgear. There were some tough time I faced
during my training there but the friendly guidance from my project supervisor Mr. Ishant
Sheth. And as a result finally I managed to make a working PLC programming code and
SCADA configuration for my project.
3. Teamwork
My final year project work in Mega Switch gear is a group project. So I must have to put
the skill of the team work in the practice. I have to specially work on to my special task,
which is the PLC programming and to form a communication between the hardware and
the PLC panel and software. In order to do these tasks successfully I have to keep in
touch with all my team members and get my self-updated with their work. Also if any
problem occurred we all have to work as a team in order to diagnose the problem. These
efforts helps me to develop skip of problem solving as a team and boost my confidence.

6.0 Conclusion

In conclusion, I gain great and advance technical and non-technical skills at


Mega-Switch gear during my project work as a final year project student. I also learnt
the PLC and SCADA programming at their in-house audio-visual training centre. I learnt
that in any industry how important the safety is. Also develop leadership skill, team
working, critical thinking and also how to apply gain theoretical knowledge into the
practical scenarios. All of these gained knowledge also helped me a lot into the my future
career.
