Homework 1

ZCT 214/3 Thermodynamics

Due:29th September 2017

1. How does two separated system was able to be justified are at the same thermal state
by simply having the same temperature measured using a typical thermometer.
(FYI: when two system reached thermal equilibrium when contacting each other, both of
the systems is at the same thermal state)

2. The pressure of an ideal gas kept at constant volume is given by the equation
P AT
where T is the thermodynamic temperature and A is a constant. Let a temperature T* be
defined by
T * B ln CT

where B and C arc constants. The pressure P is 0.1 atm at the triple point of water. The
temperature T* is 0 at the triple point and T* is 100 at the steam point.
(Given that Ps/P3 = 1.3660 and Ts T3 = 100)

a. Find the values of A, B, and C.

b. Find the value of T* when P = 0,15 atm
c. Find the value of P when T* is 50.
d. What is the value of T* at absolute zero

3. A thermocouple with one of its junction is kept at the ice point is given by a quadratic
function of t:
0.5t 0.001t 2
where t is temperature in Celsius scale, in millivolts

If a thermometer were to be design using the emf from the thermocouple as it

thermometric properties with a temperature t* is linearly define as
t* a b
Determine the suitable value of a and b if the t* = 0 at the ice point and t* = 100 at the
boiling point of a distilled water.

4. The left of the U-tube in fig 1 is closed at the top.

a. If the initial temperature is 300 K, find the temperature T at which the air column
at the left is 60 cm long. The barometric pressure is remaining constant at 760
Torr.
b. Sketch the isotherms line at 300 K and at the temperature T, in the P-v plane
(graph of P vs v). and show the curve representing the process through which
the gas in the left side of the U-tube is carried as its temperature increase
