PRESTRESSED CONCRETE DESIGN Design Code: Designed By: Date:

A pretensioned simply supported 10LGT24 double T-beam without topping, geometry shown below. It is subjected to a
uniform superimposed gravity dead-load intensity W SD and live load WL.
w = WSD + WL

W = 420 lb/ft w = WSD + WL ct

fpi = 189000 psi fpi 0.70fpu ee
cb ec cgs
fpe = 150000 psi

Determine the extreme fiber stresses at the midspan due to

1. The initial full prestress and no external gravity load
2. The final service load conditions when prestress losses
have taken place.

Allowable stress data:

f'c = 6000 psi conc. cylindrical strength

fpu = 270000 psi
fpy = 220000 psi
fpe = 150000 psi
ft = 930 psi ft = 12f'c maximum allowable tensile strength at time of initial stress in concrete
f'ci = 4800 psi concrete compressice strength at the time of initial prestress
fci = 2880 psi fci = 0.6f'ci maximum allowable stress in concrete at initial prestress
fc = 2700 psi fc = 0.45f'c maximum allowable compressive stress in concrete at service.
n = 10 nos. 7 - wire strand tendons with a 108-DI strand pattern are used to prestress beam.

2. Final condition at Service Load, Basic Method.

Midspan moment due to superimposed dead and live load is.

M = 2580480 in-lb MSD + ML = w / 8

MT = 4786176 in-lb

f' = -898 psi (C)

f' = -898 psi < fc = 0.45f'c 2700 psi O.k.!!

fb = 594 psi (T)

fb = 594 psi < ft = 12f'c 930 psi O.k.!!

3. Final service load condition by the line-of-thrust, C-Line Method.

Since:
Pe = 229500 lb
MT = 4786176 in-lb

a = 20.85 in a = Pe/MT

e' = 6.08 in e' = a - ec

Eq. 1.12 f' = -898 psi (C)

fb = 592 psi (T)

4. Final service load condition after losses using the Load-Balancing Method.
At Midspan:
P' = Pe = 229500 lb
a = ec = 14.77 in

For the balance load:

Wb = 552 lb/ft

Thus, if the total gravity load would have been 552 lb/ft , only the axial load P'/A would act if the beam had a parabilically
drapped tendon with no eccentricity at the supports. This is besause the gravity load is balanced by the tendon at the midspan.
Hence.

Total load w/c beam is subjected = 779 lb/ft WD + ( WSD + WL )

Unbalanced load, Wub = 227 lb/ft

unbalanced moment, Mub = 1394688 in-lb

Eq. 1.19 f' = -898 psi (C)

fb = 592 psi (T)

fb = 592 psi < 930 psi allowed. O.k.!!

WL = 1100 lb/ft
WSD = 100 lb/ft
f'c = 5000 psi
f'ci = 3750 psi at transfer 75% of f'c (cylindrical strength)

1. Dersign a simply supported pretensioned double-T-beam for a parking garage with harped tendon.
Using the ACI318 Buildong Code allowable stresses.

g = 82 % residual prestress ratio

w = 1000 lb/ft assumed self weight

MD = 5400000 in-lb M = WL/8 self weight moment

MSD + ML = 6480000 in-lb M = (WSD+WL)L/8 super-imposed load moment

Since the tendon is harped, the critical section is close to the midspam, where the dead-load and superimposed dead-load moments reach their
maximum. The critical section is in many cases taken at 0.40L from the support, where L is he beam span. The value 0.40L is used to indicate
that under moving load, the critical section can be 0.40L and not necessarily at midspan.

fci = 2250 psi = 0.60f'ci max. allow. comp. stress in concrete immediately after transfer and prior to losses.
fti = 184 psi fti= 3f'ci max. allow. tensile. stress in concrete immediately after transfer and prior to losses.
can be increased to 6f'ci at the supports for simply supportes members.
