Warm-up and Objective Discussion

(7 Minutes)
Teacher will show a short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZEjk4KognI) for 2
minutes about American vs British accents; teacher will divide students into two groups, one
group will repeat some of the phrases/sentences in the video using an American accent while
the other group will do the same using a British accent.

Teacher will present the learning objectives of this session, written on a huge chart and hanged
on the wall for students to keep an eye on during the session; teacher will discuss the
objectives with students.
Instruct and Model R W L S
(25 minutes)
Teacher will present a picture of the Oscars Academy Award icon to class, through the
LCD; teacher will ask students some questions about this event, and ask them to write down
some notes based on the discussion using the Cornell Notes, teacher will provide the notes
template to students. Some questions include:
- What is the Oscars? What kind of event is it? Do you know how often is it held?
- Why do you think it is held?
- Who are the people usually invited to the Oscars?
- Have you ever watched the Oscars? Who is your favorite host of the Oscars so far?

Teacher will show a video of Jimmy Kimmels monologue at the opening of the Oscars/2017
to class (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDkXHWMNNmc); before starting the video,
teacher will present a group of unfinished sentences on board, taken from the speakers
monologue; teacher will ask students to look for words said by the speak to complete the
unfinished sentences while they listen and to write them down.

Once the video is over; teacher and students will try and fill in the blanks and finish the
sentences provided earlier by the teacher on board, using the words the speaker said in the
video.

Teacher will present the words used and have a discussion with students about them, their
meanings, using them in sentences, how and when they are used.
Guided Practice R W L S
(15 minutes)
Teacher will share the video link on the monologue with students through the students
platform so that all of them will have an access to the video on their smart phones, or
computers if the session is implemented in the language lab.

Teacher will arrange a competition who finds it first. In this competition, teacher will
divide students into groups of 3, some groups will be working on identifying names of
actors/actresses mentioned in the monologue while the other groups will be working on
identifying names of movies mentioned in the monologue. Each group will write down their
answers. Teacher will give students 6 minutes on the clock. Once the time is up, all students
have to put down their pencils. The team that has more names/titles than the rest wins. Teacher
will tell students that there are 8 actors/actresses along with 12 movies mentioned in the
dialogue before the game starts. While doing the activity, the teacher will walk around the
students groups and monitor their progress.

After the activity, teacher and students will have a discussion about their answers and how
they come up with them.

Independent Practice R W L S
(13 minutes)
Teacher will distribute pictures of the actors/actresses mentioned in the Oscars monologue to
students; teacher will divide the class into pairs;
each student will have a picture of a celebrity; his/her colleague will ask a group of questions
about that celebrity (he/she is not supposed to see it);
according to the answers provided to him/her, he/she will guess who the celebrity is and vice
versa.
While doing the activity, teacher will walk around students and monitor their performance.
Assessment R W L S
Each student will be provided with a short video (15 minutes), could be a movie trailer, a part
of a movie, a TV show, news, conference, etc. Each student will be required to:

- Provide a list of the words he/she thinks are key to the context of the video (they must
be taken from the video)
- A summary of the main ideas/context/themes highlighted in the video in (150-300)
words.

This activity will be done in the language. Each student will have access to the computer
through using his/her ID number. Once he/she is logged in, he/she will have 50-60 minutes to
finish the exercise and submit their answers to the teacher.

Upon evaluating the assignments submitted by students, the teacher will have a discussion
with each student about ways to improve their listening skills. Further activities might be
designed and implemented in class as well.
