NEWARK, N.J:
Bronx man on Nov 6 admitted his role
in an extensive scheme to obtain
money through fraudulently obtained re-
fund checks issued by the U.S. Treasury,
Acting U.S., Attorney William E. Fitz-
patrick announced.
Hector Urena pleaded guilty before
U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez
in Newark federal court to an information
charging him with one count each of con-
spiracy to steal government funds, theft of
government funds, and aggravated identity
theft (Count Three).
According to documents filed in this
case and statements made in court: Stolen
Identity Refund Fraud (SIRF) is a common
type of fraud committed against the United
States government that involves the use of
stolen identities to commit tax refund fraud.
SIRF schemes generally share a number of
hallmarks.
Perpetrators obtain personal identify-
ing information, including Social Security
numbers and dates of birth, from unwitting
individuals, who often reside in the Com-
monwealth of Puerto Rico. They then com-
plete Form 1040 tax returns using the
fraudulently obtained information and fal-

ful Democratic candidates in the Mount
Vernon City Council race during local
elections Nov 7.
According to unofficial results from
the Westchester Board of Elections,
Farquharson polled 4,735 votes, while
her other colleagues incumbent Marcus
Griffith and Janice Duarte received
4,328 and 5,491, respectively.
The next highest vote-getter was
Steven Thomas of the Republican party
with 1,093. Angela Neil led the New Vi-
sion Party candidates with 866 votes
and Steven Facendo, and Robin Har-
mon-Myers had 778 and 770, respec-
tively.
In the race to succeed longtime
Mount Vernon Comptroller Maureen
Walker, former Councilwoman Debo-
rah Reynolds was far ahead of the New
Vision Partys Walidah Aime.
Walker was beaten by Reynolds in
the Democratic primary two months
ago and will leave office next month
after 24 years.
In other voting districts, Republi-
can Rob Astorino was defeated by De-
mocrat George Latimer in the
Westchester County Executive.
Tom Murphy, a Democrat and for-
mer Village of Mamaroneck trustee, de-
feated Republican George Mgrditchian.
Murphy, 56, was a village trustee until
2009 and is a former Town of Mamaro-
neck councilman.

1997 and was deployed to Iraq in Novem-

nance team, he was sought out for his

Hasselius, the commander of the 306th
Engineer Company.

and his co-accused, Jahneil Ballentine and
Dennis Clayton, have been convicted for
the 2009 murder of Ricardo Johnson on
Mall Road in Kingston 11, Jamaica WI.
Justice Martin Gayle, who had been
summing up the case since last week, had
handed it over to the jury early Monday
afternoon for deliberation.
The seven-member jury handed
down the verdict in the Home Circuit
Court in downtown Kingston Monday af-
ternoon, after deliberating for a little more
than three hours.
Ninjaman was found guilty of murder
and shooting. His co-accused were also
found guilty of murder, however, they
were found not guilty on the charge of
shooting.
The judge set December 15, 2017 for
sentencing.
Ninjaman, who was recently released
from hospital after suffering a minor heart
attack, was in court.
Prosecutors had presented evidence
that Mr. Johnson was fatally shot in a yard
by the artiste and other men.
The men had denied killing Mr. John-
son.
London buses to be
powered by coffee

help power some of London's buses from
Monday, it has been revealed.
A biofuel created by blending oil ex-
tracted from coffee waste with diesel is to
be added to the public transport fuel sup-
ply.
Technology firm bio-bean says it has
produced enough coffee oil to power one
bus for a year.
Transport for London (TfL) has in-
creasingly turned to using biofuels to re-
duce transport emissions.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS):
Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Hol-
ness, has called for the strengthening of
relations between Caribbean Community
(CARICOM) member states and non-
English-speaking countries across the
Caribbean and Latin America.
He was speaking at the closing panel
discussion on Challenges and Opportu-
nities in the Caribbean at the sixth Inter-
national Monetary Fund (IMF) High
Level Caribbean Forum in New Kingston
on Thursday, November 17.
The prime minister was supported in
his call by Grenadas prime minister, Dr
Keith Mitchell, and The Bahamas deputy
prime minister and finance minister, Peter
Turnquest.
Holness, who indicated that he is a
big proponent of full Caribbean inte-
gration, argued that significant benefits
can be derived from stronger relations be-
tween CARICOM countries and coun-
tries such as the Dominion Republic,
Haiti and Cuba.
He said Jamaica is actively pursuing
a policy of outreach and engagement with
the Spanish-speaking countries within the
region.
I have paid an official visit to the Do-
minican Republic (with which) we are
pursuing a joint tourism agreement and
we have done the same with Cuba, he
pointed out.
There is a huge market in Latin
America, which Jamaica has to tap into
and I think the rest of the Caribbean has
to do the same. For us, I think there is
greater advantage with us reaching out,
he added.
While acknowledging that language
is a barrier, Holness maintained that it
is in our interest that we have the policies
to support our people speaking a second
language, in particular Spanish and
French.
Mitchell, for his part, said much is al-
ready taking place towards integrating
non-English-speaking countries.
He pointed out that Haiti will be the
next chair of CARICOM, while Mar-
tinique has been admitted as an associate
member of the Organization of Eastern
Caribbean States (OECS).
Additionally, he said Guadeloupe has
applied for Organization of Eastern
Caribbean States (OECS) membership
and most likely will be admitted, so I
think there is some significant movement
in that regard; we are moving in the right
direction.
Turnquest also agreed that CARI-
COM needs to do more to support and in-
tegrate non-English-speaking countries.
He noted that opportunities often
available to English-speaking territories
are invariably not afforded to the other
countries because of the fact that they

tending to be an attorney has been sen-
tenced to 1 to 3 years in state prison and
ordered to pay nearly $270,000 in restitution
and penalties.
Antonia Barrone, who has gone by other
names including Mario Vrendenburg, pleaded
guilty last month to defrauding more than 400
New Yorkers out of more than $23,000 over a
span of about five years. She was sentenced
Thursday in Albany County Court on one
count of scheme to defraud.

The Attorney General's Consumer Frauds
and Protection Bureau filed a lawsuit in May
against Barrone and her company, NYS Pris-
oner Assistance Center, also known as NY Pa-
role Aids. The suit charged her with bilking
hundreds of people, including prison inmates
and their families, out of thousands of dollars
by purporting to handle administrative parole
appeals and other legal matters.
Barrone apparently operated the fraudu-
lent business from her home, and duped hun-
dreds by claiming to be an attorney and
misleading consumers into thinking her busi-

ness was staffed with attorneys. "Deceiving
vulnerable New Yorkers into paying for unli-
censed legal services is reprehensible, costing
them thousands each and jeopardizing their
rights," said Attorney General Eric Schneider-
man. "My office won't hesitate to prosecute
those who defraud New Yorkers by practicing
without a license."
Although Barrone is not an attorney, she
advertised an array of legal services on the
company website and charged thousands of
dollars to provide legal services, according to
papers filed by the Attorney General's office.
The services included filing administrative
and judicial appeals on behalf of inmates who
were denied parole by the state Department of
Corrections and Community Supervision and
representing inmates at administrative hear-
ings and individuals facing criminal charges
in various state courts. In some cases, Barrone
accepted fees but did not perform any serv-
ices.
In August, Albany County Supreme
Court Acting Justice Gerald W. Connolly or-
dered Barrone and the NYS Prisoner Assis-
tance Center to pay a $244,500 penalty to the
state as well as full restitution of $23,427.70
to consumers who paid for legal services. The
judgment also prohibits Barrone from practic-
ing law without a license or advertising or
selling legal or paralegal services.
The Attorney General's Criminal En-
forcement and Financial Crimes Bureau also
launched a criminal investigation into Bar-
rone's conduct. On Oct. 16, Barrone was ar-
rested and arraigned in Albany City Court
before Judge Holly A. Trexler on a felony
complaint filed by the Attorney General's of-
fice charging: five counts of criminal posses-
sion of a forged instrument, two counts of
third-degree grand larceny, one count of
fourth-degree grand larceny, one count of
unauthorized practice of a profession, and one
count of scheme to defraud.

at the posh Radisson Hotel ballroom in New

While the event does not yet boast ex-
otic frills like cabanas and elevated multi-
level sponsor booths, event organizers are
clearly on to something special based on

tion called Jamaica Roots aimed at
Jamaican-Americans who have lost
connection with their homeland.
For Jamaicans who would like
to take the opportunity to experience
Jamaica and reconnect with their
roots, the competition which will run
from November 5, 2017 to February
4, 2018. The monthly draws will be
broadcasted on Facebook Live.
Ambassador Marks pointed out
that Jamaica Roots, as the name sug-
gests, is about reconnecting to Ja-
maican heritage and culture and is
aimed at Jamaicans who were born in
Jamaica but moved to the United
States many years ago without re-

cellence Awards Gala on Nov. 10, 2017, at the
VIP Country Club in New Rochelle.
More than 300 attendees among them
leaders in business, nonprofit, education, and
other fields joined with the families and
friends of the Hawthorne family, which
founded Golden Krust in 1989 with a single
retail location. Today, the family-owned and
-operated business is franchised in North
America, with 109 locations along the U.S.
East Coast, as well as in Texas and Canada.
All proceeds from the night will support
the mission of the Mavis & Ephraim
Hawthorne Golden Krust Foundation, a non-
profit that was established by the Hawthorne
family to provide scholarships to college-
bound high school students from underserved
communities.
Golden Krust has provided more than
350 scholarships to students since the founda-
tion first began its work. Awardees each re-
ceive $1,000 each per year for four years of
undergraduate study.
The following students were selected

Christina McBean. A graduate of St. An-
drew High School for Girls in Kingston, Ja-
maica, McBean is now enrolled at Howard
University, where she is studying physics.

or many decades, the turkey has been the
hallmark of Thanksgiving celebrations
on dinner tables across the United States.
But if the truth be told, Jamaicans have
never been wholly enthusiastic about the tra-
ditional bird, and recently our chefs and our
home cooks have been experimenting with
an exciting new Thanksgiving idea that is
winning raves across the country- the jerk
turkey!
Since Thanksgiving is almost here, I
asked the very talented and creative chef,
Alton Henry, who is based in Newark, New
Jersey to point us to his recipe for creating a
most mouthwatering Grace jerk turkey for
the holiday. Here's what he shared.
Brining is a pretreatment in which the
whole turkey to placed in a salt and water so-
lution known as brine. This pretreatment
produces a wonderfully moist and well-sea-
soned bird. Brining should be done in the re-
frigerator or in a cooler with 5 to 6 ice packs
to keep the turkey and brine at 40 degrees or
below during the entire brining process.
Brining is more manageable with a rather
small turkey from 12 to 14 pounds.
Table salt or kosher salt can be used to
make the brine. Crystal kosher salt is recom-
mended since table salt contains additives
such as anti-caking ingredients, iodine and
other additives. Table salt is also very finely
ground and more is required to produce good
results.
Ingredients
The brine
3 cups kosher salt
2 gallons of cold water
1 cup vinegar
1/2 cup of sugar
The marinade
3 Tablespoons Grace Jerk Marinade
2 Tablespoons cooking oil
1 Tablespoons Grace Browning
Combine all ingredients
(If desired a more spicy bird , add four ta-
blespoon of Grace Jerk Marinade.)
1. Start the brining method the day be-
fore you plan to cook the turkey. Start with
a fresh or completely thawed turkey. Wash
the bird inside and out and remove the giblet
bag and neck.
2. In a large stockpot, plastic tub or
cooler dissolve 3 cups kosher salt or 11/2
cup table salt in 2 gallons cold water. Add
1/2 cup sugar and 1 cup vinegar. Stir until
the salt and sugar are completely dissolved.
Water will look clear, not cloudy.
3. Herbs and spices may be added to
brine to enhance the flavor. Add several
crushed allspice seeds, several sprigs of
dried thyme, or other dried herbs, if desired.
Grace Jerk Turkey
4. Place the turkey in the brine solution,
breast down. Cover and chill for 6 to 8
hours. Or use the overnight method by re-
ducing the salt and sugar amounts by 1/2 so
the turkey does not retain too much salt.
5. Remove the turkey from brine, rinse
inside and out under cold running water. Pat
dry with paper towels. Place on a shallow
pan and refrigerate overnight. This allows
the skin to dry out so it becomes crisp during
roasting. This step may be omitted if desired.
6. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place
turkey on shallow roasting pan. Season the
turkey inside and outside with the Jerk mari-
nade .Tie legs together and tuck wings un-
derneath the bird. Add 1 cup water to bottom
of pan and place in the oven. Let turkey get
a beautiful golden brown color, then cover
with aluminum foil.
7. Cooking time will vary depending on
the size of the turkey. Check the wrapper to
see how much the turkey weighs and deter-
mine the approximate cooking time (see
chart). Roast the turkey until temperature in
the innermost thickest part of the thigh
reaches 165 F as measured with a food ther-
mometer. Check the internal temperature in
the wing and the thickest part of the breast
as well. The temperature in all parts should
read 165 F or higher. The thigh juices
should run clear when pierced with a fork.
8. During the last 1/2 hours of cooking
time remove the aluminum foil and baste
with pan juices. Add more water to the pan
if necessary.
9. A 12-pound turkey will take about 2
and 1/2 hours to roast.

1 3-pound boneless ham, netting removed
and casing trimmed off
1/2 cup water
Honey Balsamic Glaze:
1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple (2/3 cup
pineapple, 1/3 cup juice)
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh thyme

3 pounds small red potatoes, scrubbed but
unpeeled
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons fresh parsley
(or 1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley)
Make the Honey Balsamic Glaze:
In a small heavy saucepan, bring ingredi-
ents to a boil over high heat, stirring often.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring
often, until the liquid is reduced by about
half, 7-10 minutes. Transfer to small bowl
and let cool to room temperature.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Using a sharp
knife, score ham in a crosshatch pattern.
Place ham in roasting pan and add 1/2 cup
water. Cover tightly with aluminum foil.
Bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and spread
half of the glaze over the ham, forcing it
into the scored cuts. Bake for 15 minutes.

Make the Smashed Potatoes: After
about 30 minutes of baking the ham, place

high heat. Uncover and reduce heat
to medium. Cook until tender, about 20
minutes. Drain well and return potatoes to
saucepan. Add butter, oil, salt and pepper,
and crush with a large fork then stir in the
parsley. Partially cover with the lid to keep
warm.
Slice the ham crosswise and serve with
the smashed potatoes.

vania; Jordan Thomas, a Princeton Univer-

TRUTHS ABOUT LOVE
1. Love does not equal compatibil-
ity. Just because you fall in love
with someone doesnt necessarily
mean theyre a good partner for you
to be with over the long term.
Love is an emotional process;
compatibility is a logical process
and the two dont bleed into one an-
other very well. Its possible to fall
in love with somebody who doesnt
treat us well, who makes us feel

hold the same respect for us as we
do for them, or who has such a dys-
functional life themselves that they
threaten to bring us down with
