B : Sample Answer

Good morning to the principals, teachers and fellow students. Today, I am

going to talk on the reasons why young people are obese and give
suggestions on how to reduce weight.

Firstly, the reason why young people are obese is because of improper
eating habits. Young people eat too much junk food like potato chips and
crackers. So, they have a high calorie intake every time they eat junk food.

Next, many young people are obese because they lack exercise and lead a
lazy lifestyle.

Here are some suggestions on how we can reduce our weight. First, we
must lead a healthy lifestyle. We must exercise at least three times a week.

Next, we should reduce our food, sugar and fat intake. In addition, we must
also change our eating habits. We should have fixed meal times and eat
small meals in a day.

I hope that all of you will get some beneficial information from my talk. Thank
you for your attention.

out of five male teenagers aged 13 15 smokes. There are a few reasons why these
teenagers smoke, the effects of it and several solutions to curb this problem.

There are several causes why teenagers especially boys smoke. The first
reason is peer influence. Most students are closer to their friends and peers than to

When they are addicted, the teenagers will not be able to stop smoking. In addition,
they will spend more money to buy cigarettes. The second effect is smoking can

Ways to reduce crime in your neighbourhood

As technology has become sophisticated, so, has crime prevention. By simply

leaving a light on when you go on vacation may no longer be enough to prevent a
burglary. There are three ways to keep the streets in your neighborhood safe.

The first way is to think of your mobile phones as protection tools. Always take
a charged mobile phone with you when going out. Other than that, take a moment to
save the local police department number into your speed dial. Dialing 911 is the best
emergency number to use.

Another way is to be aware of your surroundings. Spend some time to drive

or walk around your neighborhood and familiarize yourself with the cars and homes
on your street. If you see something out of the ordinary, such as a fallen tree or
another hazard, report it to the appropriate agency.

Next, be cautious when using social media. With cyber crime on the rise,
online vacation posting This is me in Europe or away for three days has become
the modern-day version amongst the internet users. Do not broadcast on Facebook
or Twitter your exotic vacation because this implies that your home will be empty.
Post photographs and stories about your vacation after you return from your trip.

In short, everyone should play their role to curb crimes effectively. People in
the community must work together to prevent or reduce crimes in their
neighbourhood.

Questions 16 - 25
Read the brochure below and then use the information given to complete the
following tasks.

ACTIVITIES ON PHUKET ISLAND

Cable Water Skiing
This is a relatively new sport and requires a bit of nerve. Participants will
have to learn to swim and dive before they sign up for this sport.
Participants need to provide a swimming certificate before they are
coached to perform spectacular aquatic skills at fast speed waters. The
sport is held at a private and quiet environment.

Bungee Jumping
The Jungle Bungee Jump is a real test of guts. It tests the power of the
participants if they are able to overcome the internal struggle that every
jumper experiences when standing 54 metres above the ground - to
jump, or not to jump. Participants must be medically-fit. This is a land
sport.

Sea Canoe Tours

These are the most stimulating, interesting and educational tours offered.
The hongs, or caves of Phang Nga Bay, were formed from gradual water
erosion through the centre of the islands. Canoes are the only means to
reach these caves. They are dispatched from mother boats and visitors
must be accompanied by a guide. Sometimes they have to paddle
through fifty- metres long caves to the centre of the island. Visitors must
bring a torch and a first-aid kit for this trip.

Khao Sok - Mountain Trip

Khao Sok National Park is a three-hour drive to the north in Phang Nga
province. It is a trekkers dream. The park hosts a number of cheap guest
houses where nature lovers from all over the world gather to discuss the
truly awesome sights, fauna and flora spotted along the many trails. The
trekking can get rough for young children and the elderly. Children and
the elderly are advised to trek closer to the park. The more resilient
trekkers must dress appropriately with proper walking gear. It is

Reading Comprehension 1

1 This wonder material of the twentieth century has invaded every

aspect of our lives, clogging up drains and gutters or lining the
kitchen refuse bin. These plastic bags or shoppers as they are
commonly called are available in all shapes and sizes and colours.
2 Look into every kitchen and you will find a dirty environmental 5
secret. Lurking under the sink is a strangely inexhaustible stash of
plastic bags. Most households have dozens stuffed away. Some
even buy holders to keep them in one place for that elusive day when
you might need to reuse them.
3 It may not sound like the worse crime known to humankind but for 10
a growing number of environmentalists, the humble plastic bag has
become Public Enemy Number One. They point out that discarded
bags litter our cities, kill wildlife, block drains and hang around for
decades. There is a joke that says that when we all dead, the plastic
bags are still around. This is because plastic cannot be dissolved by 15
enzymes and bacteria. The molecular structure of plastic is so tight
that it cannot be broken down. However, when plastic is burnt,
sulphur dioxide gas is released and it is a major pollutant. In other
words, plastic is non-biodegradable.
4 Environmentalists argue that they are economically unsound in 20
pretty much every way. They are a waste of resources in that we use
them once and throw them away, says Friends of the Earth. Since
there are far more voracious uses of fossils fuels than producing high
density polyethylene to make into bags, the argument is more
aesthetics than wasting of resources. After the bags have made their 25
way from the checkout to the kitchen and perhaps a brief stint lining
the kitchen rubbish bin, most are destined for the landfill. But a
proportion of them will make a bid for freedom somewhere along the
way and become a public eyesore. Highly visible, blustering in the
streets or flapping annoyingly in the branches of trees, they have 30
earned themselves a number of pejorative nicknames. The Irish call

122
REACT 2.0 JPN PERAK 2014

them witches knickers and the Chinese refer to them as white

pollution. In South Africa there are so many bags in the trees that
residents say it frequently looks as though it is snowing.
5 Plastic bags have devastating effects on wildlife. Planet Ark, an 30
organization for the protection of wildlife estimates that tens of
thousands of whales, birds, turtles and seals are killed each year
from plastic bags litter, thanks to the fact that a floating plastic bag
may look like a tasty jellyfish to the turtle. Another victim was a whale
with nearly a kilogram of plastic and packaging in its stomach. 35
6 Meanwhile, the plastic bags industry maintains that plastic bags
are nowhere near the worlds worst environment problem. Do they
have a point?
7 Since they were first introduced in the 1970s, plastic bags have
infiltrated our lives. Statistical evidence shows that globally we carry 40
home between 500 billion to a trillion bags each year about 150
bags for every person on earth. The industry says it is hygienic,
odourless, leak-proof, waterproof and a convenient way of carrying
goods. Besides, it costs less in energy and resources to make or to
recycle than paper. They are also more energy-efficient to 45
manufacture and to transport. The Carrier Bag Consortium, a group
of British suppliers set up to fight the anti-bag campaign, points out
that plastic bags have the highest reuse rate of any disposable
products; 80% are recycled at least once as bin liners and nappy
bags. 50
8 So, the controversy rages on. Whether the plastic bag is here to
stay or not depends on how useful it is and how it is used.
Nevertheless, if every plastic bag is collected and sent for recycling,
and not discarded with the rubbish it contains, its impact on the
environment may not be felt so much. 55

Reading Comprehension 2

1 A very good morning to the Principal, teachers and students. Today

is Earth Day, a day when we show our appreciation for the wonderful
treasures of nature. It is also a day to remember that it is our duty to look
after Mother Earth. Please remember, we have only one planet that we
can leave for future generations. 5
2 Are we doing enough to take care of the environment? There are so
many things we can do as part of our daily life. Firstly, we have to learn
to live simply. One way to do this is by not filling our lives with too many
things. We can actually be happy with fewer things because we will learn
to appreciate what we have. The less we buy, the better for the planet. It 10
is not necessary to have 300 pairs of shoes or 50 T-shirts to have a
meaningful life. This must be heart-breaking news for those of you who
enjoy shopping!
3 Secondly, buy products that are durable and will last you a long time.
Do not choose products that will go out of fashion quickly. It is really not 15
important to follow every new fashion craze that comes along. People
are using you to make money. So dont fall for fashion gimmicks.
Sometimes it is better to borrow, share or hire things that you only
need at certain times. I actually know of people who buy different
magazines and share them with others. So they spend less and get to 20
read more. Isnt that clever? There are many other things too that we
can share with others so that we have less waste. This way we can
conserve our precious resources.
4 Thirdly, buy products that can be reused. If possible buy second-
hand products whenever practical. Repair or recondition things to extend 25
their useful life. Pass usable items on to someone else if you no longer
need them. You could give away clothes, books and other household
things to others. Do not just throw them away.
5 Avoid disposable products. It is better to use cloth and metal things
that can be used again and again. When you use a lot of disposable 30
things, you are harming Mother Earth. Imagine mounds and mounds of

127
REACT 2.0 JPN PERAK 2014

rubbish everywhere! Is this the planet you want to leave for future
generations?
6 Reuse shopping bags and containers, and carry your own bags
when you go shopping. Choose to buy products made of recycled
materials. Choose products that can be recycled. Once you have 35
recycled and reused everything you can, very little waste will remain!
This is where you are doing Mother Earth a favour. You are actually
helping to reduce waste on this planet. If each and every one of us is
willing to do our share by reducing waste, we can make a difference.
7 As a clever consumer, you hold the vital key to waste minimization. 40
You have the right to refuse products with excess packaging, plastic
shopping bags, disposable containers, non-biodegradable items and
products that cannot be recycled.
8 Refusing to accept these products sends a strong message to the
manufacturers. As consumers we will not tolerate excessive and non- 45
recyclable packaging and the waste it creates. It shows them that we
demand more sustainable alternatives. It is in your hands to help to
make Earth a better planet.
9 Rethink your lifestyle habits and realize that you can make a
difference by the choice that you make. Thank you. 50

Reading Comprehension 3
1 Living in todays modern world is not an easy thing to do. People
face a lot of stress, trying to cope with their daily life, family, work, friends
and the environment. Stress is the combination of psychological,
physiological and behavioural reactions that people have in response to
events that threaten or challenge them. Stress can be good or bad. 5
Sometimes, stress is helpful, providing people with the extra energy or
alertness they need. For example, stress could give a runner the edge
he or she needs to persevere in a marathon. Unfortunately, stress is
often not helpful and can even be harmful when not managed effectively.
2 There are many reasons why people undergo stress. One of the 10
sources of stress is the daily hassles that occur practically every day,
such as having to make decisions, arguing with friends and family, trying
to meet deadlines at school or work, or even stepping on a piece of
bubble gum. Daily hassles may include concerns about weight, health of
a family member, too many things to do, misplacing or losing thing, 15
investments, crimes and physical appearance.
3 Besides these, major catastrophes can be tremendous sources of
stress. One major type of catastrophe is natural disasters like
earthquakes, volcano eruptions, floods, and droughts. In such cases,
victims and survivors have to deal with their personal traumas besides 20
having to cope with the loss of loved ones and material loss.
4 Many people face stress due to their family. Lack of parent-child
emotional bonding, misbehaviour of children, poor communication
between parents and children, remarriage of parents could also result in
stress. Changing jobs or occupations can also be stressful. People may 25
feel frustrated, and belittled, for example, after being laid off or fired from
their job.
5 Students in schools and colleges, for instance, often feel
overwhelmed from having too many assignments or assignments that
are too difficult. It has been found out that final grades, excessive 30
homework, examinations, teachers and class environment often cause
stress to students.

132
REACT 2.0 JPN PERAK 2014

6 When people have stress, they will have problems with their
concentration and making decisions. They may have a low opinion of
themselves. People who are under extreme stress may react by showing 35
feelings of nervousness, anger, sadness, shame or tension. As a result
of these feelings, they may have increased heart rate, increased blood
pressure, rapid or irregular breathing, muscle tension, sweating, dry
mouth or increased blood sugar level. Furthermore, they may be prone
to accidents or have difficulty in sleeping. Others may overeat or suffer 40
loss of appetite. Some may not want to face their problems. These
kinds of people will quit jobs, drop out of school, take alcohol or other
drugs, attempt suicide or even commit crimes.
7 There are two ways in which people can manage their stress. They
can do it through self-help or seeking professional help. Many try to 45
reduce stress by themselves by having an optimistic outlook in life.
Having a high self-esteem can help a person to respond to stress
positively.
8 People are particularly resistant to stress if they lead a healthy
lifestyle, which includes a healthy diet, physical fitness and enough rest 50
and relaxation. A healthy lifestyle involves following a balanced diet and
making time for meals. Physical fitness makes people less vulnerable to
stress responses. Aerobic exercise, weight lifting, yoga, and tai chi are
examples of forms of exercise that can help reduce stress. When people
relax and allow themselves to rest, they are more capable and have 55
more energy to face stress. Sometimes it is easy to relax just by getting
a massage, listening to calming music, meditating or admiring peaceful
works of art.
9 Seeking professional help is another way to cope with stress. A
wide range of professionals are available to people with stress-related 60
problems, ranging from medical doctors to mental health professionals
like clinical psychologist or psychiatrists. Other mental health
professionals like marriage and family counselors, social workers, nurses
and telephone crisis counselors may also be able to provide some
assistance with stress management. 65

Reading Comprehension 4

1 Preparing for an examination is an inevitable part of every students

life. Nevertheless, the preparation is an anxiety-laden affair. The
situation becomes more intimidating when a student does not prepare
himself well for this most crucial part of his academic life. Besides
problems faced in preparation for the examination, students also 5
encounter difficulties during the examination itself. One of the most
serious is a panic attack.
2 A panic attack produces the same symptoms in any situation.
Normally, when a person experiences the attack, his heartbeat
accelerates and his breathing rate increases. In addition, he may also 10
perspire and display slight trembling of the limbs.
3 To prevent a panic attack, a student must be diligent in his study
preparation. He must know his subject matter well, through consistent
studying as well as maintaining disciplined study hours. Most of the time,
a student who experiences panic is ill-prepared for the examination. 15
Usually, he leaves his revision until late in the semester and
subsequently discovers that he does not have enough time to revise.
Although there are students who can put on a courageous faade during
the examination, they panic the moment they see a question for which
they are not prepared. Therefore, students should start their revision 20
early and work consistently.
4 Another problem that students face during an examination is
experiencing a mental block. Some candidates experience a complete
blank when they look at the question paper. Similar to a panic attack, a
mental block can occur due to the lack of preparation. When a mental 25
block occurs, a student might, for example, suddenly hear the loud
ticking of the clock when trying to extract a familiar or well-learned fact
from memory. However, a mental block can be overcome by utilising
mental associations. For example, students should recall past lectures
and notes and list facts or concepts related to the blocked item. This 30
may help him to see certain relationships and make mental associations

137
REACT 2.0 JPN PERAK 2014

which he can use to answer the question. Another way to retrieve a

blocked item is to move on to the next question which may trigger off an
idea that could provide clues to the blocked item.
5 Physical fatigue is another problem students may experience during 35
the examination. Although it may not be as serious as a panic attack or a
mental block, chronic tiredness due to the previous days preparation
may affect examination performance. It is very useful for students to
know that rest and sleep should not be compromised. Inadequate sleep
causes physical fatigue which may affect students examination 40
performance. Apart from having enough rest, students should also watch
their diet and avoid overeating as it may make them feel sluggish. They
should refrain from taking medication which can cause drowsiness.
6 In the final analysis, it is worthwhile for students to set realistic and
achievable goals for revision so that their targets can be met. Beginning 45
revision early and doing consistent work will help students to take control
of their study preparation.

Reading Comprehension Passage 5

1 Stories of phantom ships that mysteriously emerge out of thick, murky

mists far out at sea and then disappear, strike fear in the hearts of
seafarers. Nobody knows why these strange ships appear and no one
knows where they come from.
2 One such strange story is the tale of a sailing ship named the Marie 5
Celeste. In the autumn of 1872, the ship set sail. The sailing was a
normal Atlantic crossing. Everyone who knew the ship and her crew
expected a safe and routine trip. The captain even took his wife and
young daughter along with him.
3 However, on 5 December it was spotted floating aimlessly near 10
Gibraltar. There was no movement on board the drifting ship. The Marie
Celeste was abandoned, leaving no trace of her captain, crew or
passengers. The fate of the people who sailed in the ill-fated ship
remains a mystery to this day.
4 When the ship was searched it was found to be in perfect condition. 15
There was no damage to either the ship herself or her cargo. Everyone
who played a part in the investigation said they could find absolutely no
explanation for the disappearance of the crew and passengers. The
investigation discounted the possibility of a mutiny as there was no
evidence of a struggle anywhere. There was no sign of piracy too, as the 20
cargo and every other valuable on the ship seemed intact. But as the
naval search party that found the Marie Celeste continued its search,
even more disturbing facts emerged.
5 It seemed that everyone abandoned the ship very quickly, without
time for any preparation. The search party found the sewing machine of 25
the captains wife. A thimble was lying on its side nearby. A childs
pinafore was still in the middle of her sewing, without thought of putting
anything away. This kind of evidence suggested the passengers and
crew abandoned the Marie Celeste in calm weather and not in any storm.
Indeed, there was no evidence of bad weather damage to the ship in any 30
form.

6 The ships dining table was set for four people. Clearly, the diners
hurried from the table in the middle of their meal. The captains daughter
left her plate of porridge unfinished. A partly eaten boiled egg remained
on the plate at the captains place at the head of the table. There were 35
two watches left on a side table along with an opened bottle of cough
medicine. With the exception of a missing chronometer and some of the
ships paper, everything else remained intact on board the ship.
7 Where were the passengers and crew? Nobody knows what
happened to the Marie Celeste and the mystery remains unsolved. None 40
of the crew or the passengers have ever been found. This story is sure to
send shivers down the spine of all those who love tales of the strange
and unexpected. However, ask any sailor and they are likely to tell you
that the strangest things do indeed happen at sea.

Reading Comprehension Passage 6

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

1 But Ramli had other things to worry about. He knew that Rajus diesel
was almost finished. How far could they go? Twenty kilometers? Thirty?
They must find some diesel, somewhere.
2 But where? There was nothing on this road. Only rock,
trees.Perhaps number 66s luck was finished. Then Ramli saw 5
something else. Something it was not a rock or tree. He touched
Minas arm.
3 Wait, wait, stop quickly, he said. Go back a little. When the bus
stopped, he climbed out. He was right. Beside the road, behind some
trees, was a lorry. It lay on its side, with its wheels in the air. Excited, 10
Ramli went to the lorry and looked at its diesel tank. The tank was not
broken. It was full of diesel. With Ah Chongs help, Ramli needed only a
few minutes to fill the bus with diesel from the lorry. He wanted to sing
again. Now number 66 had a chance of reaching Gua Musang. Their
luck was not finished yet. 15
4 The night was very cold now. Most of the passengers began to feel ill.
The cold wind came through the broken windows, and it cut like a knife.
The little girl was very ill. She cried quietly, and her father tried to comfort
her. Dont cry, my little one. Soon, we are going to be in the hospital.
Soon the doctors are going to take care of you. But he knew Gua 20
Musang was still far away.
5 We must stop, said Mina. We must stop and make a fire to keep
warm. Without a warm fire, that little girl is going to die.
6 No!No fire, Samad said. A fire is dangerous. Everybody can see us.
The rebels can find us easily. The others said nothing. There was a long 25
silence.
7 Then Ramli spoke. The little girl is more important, he said. Mina is
right. We must stop. In two hours, the morning is coming. Then we can
travel again.

8 All the passengers were happy to move and keep warm. They picked 30
up pieces of wood, and Muthu made a big fire. Soon they all felt better.
Id like a big cup of coffee! said one of the farmers. They laughed.
Nobody had coffee. But they finished the food and they sang songs and
waited for the end of the long night. The little girl stopped crying.
9 At last, they saw that morning light in the east. They found themselves 35
in a high, wide valley between the mountains. There was one house,
alone in the middle of the valley. They could not see any people. Was
this a farm, with food and help and friendly people? Or was it full of rebel
soldiers? They got back into the bus. Samad held his gun ready. Muthu
sat in the drivers seat and took the steering wheel. Slowly, he drove 40
towards the house. Fifty metres away from the house, he stopped.
Nothing moved. Carefully, Ramli got down from the bus.
10 The door of the house opened. An old man came out. He had a gun.
Who are you? he asked. Nobody comes along this road. Are you rebel
fighters? 45
11 Im just a bus driver! Ramli told him. These people come from
Sungai Siput. Theyre my passengers. Were going to Gua Musang.
12 The old man laughed. I never expected to see a Gua Musang bus
here! the old man said. You are lucky to be alive. He laughed again.
Come inside, and you can all rest. Inside the house, they drank tea and 50
ate some cakes. Ramli and the old farmer talked about the road to Gua
Musang.
13 Is this road open? Ramli asked.
14 Here, you are only thirty kilometers from Gua Musang, the old man
answered. There are no rebels in this valley. But they are waiting at the 55
Ampang Pecah. Do you know Ampang Pecah?
15 I know it, Ahmad said.
16 At Ampang Pecah, there are a lot or rebel soldiers. They have lorries
and guns. They are stopping everybody. I dont think you can pass
through there. 60
17 Ramli thanked the old man. Do you want to come with us? he asked.
18 No, the old man answered. This is my house. Im going to stay
