Inside the cabin, only a thin veil is draped over the MX-5. Softer
materials clad certain areas, and the doors and seats are retrimmed.

eclipsed only by the one that serves the
capital, Copenhagen. This is entirely down
to the presence of a certain toy manufacturer,
Lego. This makes Billund the Maranello of the toy world, a
place of pilgrimage for the faithful, and ensures that Lego,
like Ferrari, is the engine of the towns economy a quad-
turbo, 16-cylinder, 16-litre engine at that.
But although there are Lego versions of various Ferraris,
its actually a Porsche thats brought us to this pleasantly
unprepossessing corner of Scandinavia today. Last month,
the companys Technic line unveiled a magnifcent and
magnifcently complicated iteration of the 911 GT3 RS,
complete with functioning dual-shift gearbox, steering
and engine. Almost as desirable and in many ways as
ingeniously engineered as the real thing, this merited
much closer investigation.
Lego, like many great brands, has had its ups and downs,
most recently a worrying brush with the economic grim reaper
in the early Noughties. Since 2005, though, the company has
grown a whopping 18 per cent year-on-year every year, the
latest fgures showing a 1bn proft on a 4bn turnover, and
still wholly owned by the family descended from founder
Ole Kirk Christiansen. (Lego paterfamilias Kjeld Kirk
Christiansen is a gigantic petrolhead, coincidentally.)

up against the red line much earlier, riding a software-

the F355 is more awesome still.
Then theres the gearbox. I once almost moved
amiable former Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa to the
point of fury by banging on about the F355s manual
box. He insists that DIY gearchanging distracts you from
getting the best out of the rest of the car, but its one of
my favourite parts of the Ferrari experience. In an F355,
every corner or roundabout demands properly co-

satisfaction. Any numpty can drive the 488 quickly. 1993 TOYOTA MR2

AM-RB 001, sucking the atmosphere out of the
room, bending the light towards itself. It renders
me speechless through a prolonged inability
to draw breath. Im smitten by astonishment,
exhilaration, bewilderment and pure, simple
petrolheaded joy. Frankly its a reaction the like of
which Ive never experienced on seeing a new car.
Two months ago, Adrian Newey, pre-eminently
successful Grand Prix car engineer, and Marek
Reichman, design director at Aston, sat down
with TopGear and outlined a series of outlandish
claims that amounted to knocking the LaFerrari,
McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 into the weeds.
They were going to build, from late 2018, an
edition of 99 road cars that would be a step up in
performance from anything around. And theyd
also do a version with wider tyres, more wings,
a difuser and a stripped cabin, that would lap
a track alongside an LMP1 car. Which is almost
unimaginably faster than an FXX K or P1 GTR.
Well, Newey is undoubtedly a man of outstanding
fast-car credentials, but, still, I was sceptical.
Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche know what theyre
doing. Yet this pair insisted passionately that
clean-sheet design would see them home. Only
they wouldnt show anyone that design.
Today, its clear what they were on about. There
simply has not been another car like this. Its speed
will come in great part from downforce, lightness
and smallness. Its copious beauty derives as much
from what is absent as what is present. It is tiny and The ultimate road car/

The underside is where it all goes mad, defned

necessary for its grip and braking targets.
