TB
Tuberculosis is one of the worlds most deadly infectious diseases. In 2016, TB killed 1.7 million
people, including 374,000 people with HIV, making it the ninth leading cause of death
worldwide.
TB is spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. One person with active,
untreated TB can spread the disease to as many as 15 other people in a year. This makes the
hunt for missing cases those currently not diagnosed, treated or reported all the more
urgent. With an estimated 10.4 million new cases of TB every year, we must accelerate
progress.
Malaria
A mosquito bite can kill. Its as simple as that. Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted
through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito, causing nearly 429,000 deaths a
year. Children and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable in 2015, almost 70 percent of
all malaria deaths were children under 5.
Once prevalent across most of the globe including much of the American South and Northern
Italy elimination efforts of the 20th century have reduced malarias footprint to 91 countries.
Today, however, half of the worlds population 3.2 billion people remains at risk of malaria.
HIV/AIDS
The statistics of AIDS are startling. Since the start of the epidemic, more than 70 million people
have become infected with HIV; more than 35 million people have died of AIDS-related
illnesses. AIDS is one of the leading causes of death worldwide; in fact, it is the leading cause of
death for women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries.
However, there is one number that is even more startling. Out of 37 million people estimated
to be living with HIV, 19 million do not know their status. In other words, approximately half the
people living with HIV do not know that they are HIV-positive and therefore do not seek out
treatment and care.
People who dont know their status, or who are not able to access treatment and care, are at
risk of developing AIDS or of passing the virus on to others at a huge cost to themselves and
to society.
