Development/Teaching Approaches
The teacher will go through the PowerPoint on the function of the ear
Next the teacher will hand out a bowl and plastic wrap to each table
The teacher will tell the students to tightly put the plastic wrap over the top of the bowl
The teacher will then pass out rice to all of the tables
Next the teacher will tell all of the students to put rice on top of the plastic wrap
The teacher will then pass out tuning forks to each table
Then the students will bang the tuning fork on their table and hold it over the rice
The students must then describe what happened with the rice and why they think that
happened
The teacher will then choose one group to come up and explain to the rest of the class
what happened to their rice
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
The teacher will review with the students what the functions of the ear are
The teacher will then answer any questions the students have
Lastly the teacher will tell the students that they will be learning about how sound
travels tomorrow
Accommodations/Differentiation:
The activity will benefit students with hearing impairments because they will be able to
feel the vibrations from the tuning forks and see what is happening to the rice
Students with vision impairments can be the one to hold the tuning forks and feel the
vibrations so that they have a better understanding of what is occurring. The other
people in their groups can also share with them what is going on.
