Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Rebecca Bernfeld Date: January 16th

Group Size: 20 Allotted Time 30 Minutes Grade Level 2nd Grade

Subject or Topic: Function of the Ear

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

10.1.2.B.1 Identify and describe functions of major body organs and systems

Learning Targets/Objectives:
The second-grade student will demonstrate their understanding of the function of the ear by
creating a model of the eardrum.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. Thumbs up/ thumbs down 1. number of thumbs up
2. Eardrum Model 2. Describe what happened
.
Assessment Scale:
Proficient: able to describe what happened to the rice and why
Basic: able to describe what happened to the rice but not why
Below Basic: unable to explain what happened

Subject Matter/Content: function of the ear

Prerequisites:
Know what the ear is
Key Vocabulary:
Ear
o The part of the body we use to hear
Eustachian tube
o A tube that helps you maintain your balance
Content/Facts:
The ear detects sounds and then turns them into what we hear
It is also used to keep our sense of balance
There is a tube in the middle of the ear called the Eustachian tube
o This tube makes sure that the air pressure in the middle of the ear is equal to the
air pressure outside of the ear
o If they are not equal, then your balance would be off
All of the parts of the ear work together to detect the sounds and turn them into
something that we can understand

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
The teacher will start the lesson by asking the students what we use our ears for
Watch a BrainPOP video about hearing
o https://www.brainpop.com/health/bodysystems/hearing/

Development/Teaching Approaches
The teacher will go through the PowerPoint on the function of the ear
Next the teacher will hand out a bowl and plastic wrap to each table
The teacher will tell the students to tightly put the plastic wrap over the top of the bowl
The teacher will then pass out rice to all of the tables
Next the teacher will tell all of the students to put rice on top of the plastic wrap
The teacher will then pass out tuning forks to each table
Then the students will bang the tuning fork on their table and hold it over the rice
The students must then describe what happened with the rice and why they think that
happened
The teacher will then choose one group to come up and explain to the rest of the class
what happened to their rice

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
The teacher will review with the students what the functions of the ear are
The teacher will then answer any questions the students have
Lastly the teacher will tell the students that they will be learning about how sound
travels tomorrow

Accommodations/Differentiation:
The activity will benefit students with hearing impairments because they will be able to
feel the vibrations from the tuning forks and see what is happening to the rice
Students with vision impairments can be the one to hold the tuning forks and feel the
vibrations so that they have a better understanding of what is occurring. The other
people in their groups can also share with them what is going on.
