Lesson 25

REWRITING
Both Chris and Pat went to Guangzhou for a study trip. Chris did not like it at all while
Pat had a wonderful time. Below are the letters they wrote to their aunt. Letter 2 has
some missing words. Read Letter 1 and then fill in the blanks in Letter 2 to make it
opposite in meaning. You should make sure your answers are grammatically correct.
Use only ONE word for each blank. One has been done for you as an example.

Letter 1
Dear Auntie Ellen,

There was a study trip to a secondary school in Guangzhou organized by our school last
week. It was really a waste of time. It was difficult to get to the school. The road was
very rough and the air-conditioning of the bus malfunctioned. Worse still, we arrived
late!

When we arrived, the school representatives took us to look around the school. We
found that the hall was gloomy and the classrooms were cramped. Also, there was not
much room for students to play sports. I don’t think students there would enjoy their
school life.

After that, the school representatives invited us to have lunch with them. That’s a great
idea as we were so hungry at the time. Unfortunately, the quality of the food left much
to be desired. The hygiene of the canteen was far from satisfactory too.

None of us liked this study trip and we decided not to take part in any study trip
thereafter.

Chris

ANSWERS
Article 1 的對應部份是 a waste of time (浪費時間)。
2. convenient (方便) / easy (簡易)
The road was very rough 變為 The
bus ran smoothly.
4. well
6. on
7. bright
9. spacious
Article 1 的對應部份是 not much room (不太多空間)。
10. enjoy
11. good/great
Article 1 的對應部份是 great,但留意 Article 2 的“not”已帶出 negative
Article 1 的對應部份是 left much to be desired (並不是我們所渴求的)。Leave
much to be desired 是 bad 的委婉說法,意即「不夠好」 ,e.g. The performance of
this athlete leaves much to be desired.
14. satisfactory
15. all
Article 1 的對應部份是 none of us。We all (我們皆會) 跟 none of us (我們皆不)
16. will/would
Article 1 的對應部份是 decide not to (決定不會)。
