Evidence of Learning: Development of Assessment Tools

We all know that teachers and students grow on the process of

teaching and learning. Teachers become better educators as they adjust
their instruction according to their students capacity and employs effective
teaching strategies that may engaged learning within the students. As the
teachers use a set of combination of different types of assessments, they
get to know their students well and get an insight on how they are learning.
A range of tools are available to assist the creation of an effective
assessment task (e.g. tests, projects, presentations, discussions) to assess
students in the teaching-learning process. I personally choose the
assessment tools (exams, quiz and project) as my guide to know how my
future students learn best.
First, for summative assessment, I choose exams because for me as
a student, it helps me to evaluate if I gained some knowledge from my
previous lessons and will be able to incorporate it on real life situations.
Also, exams might be stressful, but they improve the learning of a student.
For me, it gives a student multiple opportunity to demonstrate what they
know and can do. It also enables teachers to be confident in the accuracy
of their judgements about each student. Moreover, exams dont just simply
provide the students a targeted and fit-to-purpose opportunity but also it
enhances what the students already know.
Second, for formative assessment, I choose quizzes because I
believed that repetition is an important element in the learning of a student
and one way to repeat a content is through quizzes. I believed that the
purpose of quizzes is not assess the learning but to give learners a way to
remember what they have already learned. Using variety of questions
(multiple choice, matching type, etc.), we can provide important points to
prepare our students for other assessments during the course.
Lastly, for performance-based assessment, I choose projects
because I think it is an efficient way to learn as it forces you to apply the
skills while learning them. This, in fact, aids in retention and increases the
usefulness of the skills learned. Also, it practices camaraderie between
students which can help for their future. Traditional assessment must not
be the only way to evaluate the knowledge of our students but instead, we

must try to think creatively on how to assess our students. For me, students
learn in different ways and so for assessment. Some are not good in a pen-
paper examination, yet they are good in expressing their thoughts through
oral presentations. As a teacher, we must be aware of this case and try to
incorporate a new method in assessing our students for them to engaged
in the teaching-learning process.
